”Make something with wild cliffs, why not a hysterical Fillyjonk, a sea creature or actually whatever”. This was the commission from the eccentric nobleman Göran Åkerhielm to Tove Jansson. He wanted a painting for his house on the remote island Källskär, in the Southern archipelago of the Åland islands, Finland. The result was the Källskär painting, a unique painting by Tove Jansson, as it is the only painting with Moomin elements that she made on commission.
In the short documentary ”Wild Cliffs - Tove Jansson and the Unique Painting on the Åland Islands”, we find out the fascinating story behind the commission and restoration of the painting, get a look into the friendship between Åkerhielm and Jansson and go to visit the island where it all started. The documentary also features never-before-released footage of Tove Jansson on the island, filmed on Super 8 mm film by her partner Tuulikki Pietilä, and an interview with the art historian Tuula Karjalainen, author of the book ”Tove Jansson: Work and Love”.
