8:27 One thing I have found to be helpful in my 800 sq ft yard of fescue is walk the perimeter of the lawn with a hose and gun sprayer and deep water the 5 feet from the concrete out, it has made a world of difference this year, I do have irrigation and have worked a lot of getting it better.

I actually reseeded my lawn with Kentucky Bluegrass 2 weeks ago and with perennial ryegrass one week ago. I already have some germination….is it too late to add the Scott’s triple action product you used. I did do an application of tenacity and poa constrictor a week prior to seeding. By the way, I started watching your video’s about 2-3 months ago thinking they were silly and simple. But then I noticed that I couldn’t stop watching them, and the information you provided was actually pretty good, and the simple way you present your information is very helpful and handy. I'm assuming it's been 3-weeks since you applied Tenancity, if that's right then yeah, you can absolutely apply that triple action stuff from scotts right now. 18-21 days apart is perfect for Mesotrione control. Most cool season lawns still have a few more weeks of growth in them before things really shut down in late fall so don't dilly-dally if you choose to do this...the new grass might fare well with the extra bit of starter fert (phos) just before winter hits. If soil temps are well below 55 then you may not get much of a growth push from the N but the P will help that baby grass root down to get through winter. As for your other comment, 18 months ago I started experimenting with "standard" youtube lawncare edits, music, cinementography, etc. It wasn't my style. I have since doubled down on basic edits as full of info as possible (sometimes too long winded admittedly). I try to visualize a neighbor in front of me with nothing but time to kill as they ask me questions about what I'm doing and why. It's not a style that resonates with everyone but I LOVE seeing that so many people out there apricate the style I take. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your time here on the channel. Thank you for this video. I see newbies asking for advice all the time and being recommended an advanced turf management program. But I have always believed starting with the regular hardware store “weed and feed” programs is a better entry point. For some people, that’s enough. Others of us get into optimization, and that’s when the more advanced techniques are valuable. But you’ll already have the basics of spreading, timing, etc.

I agree, I'd love to see a Spring update. The homeowner probably will see this video so comment to him to send me spring video clips for an update and I'll try to make it happen eventually. I just moved so I'm 700+ miles away from this lawn now; hard to make vids there without help. :) Straw or peat would have helped but some germination is better than nothing and I was limited to big box store lawn and garden section. I think it'll make a difference next year but a lot of long term success is on the homeowner getting interested in the hobby of lawn keeping.

[sorry if this is a repost from another one of your videos but this spot seemed like a better fit] Can i use this ''approach" if I have some Bermuda grass in my lawn? The Bermuda is growing better than my Fescue & Rye, so I am slowly learning to embrace it. At this point I'd like to have a mix of the Warm & Cool grasses. I am in southern New England and get a lot of sun on my front yard. Will mesotrione damage/kill the Bermuda? As i try to prevent winter weeds from germinating AND lay down some fescue seed to fill in the bare spots? Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm so happy to have those braces off! One of the better days of my life! LOL - I've got a full production lineup that I'll be working on for the next month and I'll probably keep on making some stuff through the winter too. Viewership drops off considerably from November through Feb so most creators don't publish much during those months but I'll be pushing through the entirety of winter just as I've done in years past. This year off season I'll focus on EDU content, coastal (non-dormant grasses), my own new lawn renovation projects, and various garden topics. Hope to see you and some others in the comments even when most lawns are dormant. :) True story, I coached my wife over the phone last night on sprinkler system winterization as last night we dipped into the 20's overnight at our old house in Oregon where she's still at for the next two weeks. I'm now in coastal Southern California so down here it's never freezes, crazy weird if you ask me! :)

yeah, that's always something I've liked about my rye/kbg lawn over winter, there's always a hint of green in it. You must live a bit further south or coastal? Over on the Oregon coast close to where I used to live the Rye just kept growing all through the winter months. Not a lot of videos out there on cool season grass in winter that isn't dormant :)

@@TurfMechanic I’m in Salt Lake City, Utah. I think the rye has done so well, during the winter months, is because we have had mild winters the last several years. That said, the rye has really struggled during the heat. We had a record of 20ish days of triple digit heat during the summer. The rye SUCKS in heat! Now that I have established turf, I am going to lessen the amount of rye since I have a good amount, probably 50% rye. I reel mow down to 1/2 inch.

We got to the new place last Sunday morning around 1am. Took 17 hours to make the move with the uhaul, kids, and all the animals. This video however was filmed in Klamath Falls before we moved although the outro was filmed in my new backyard here in Camarillo, CA. I've got so much I want/need to do here I don't know where exactly to start in regards to filming but I'm figuring it out. I'm planning warm season Buffalograss out front with cool season RTF out back. I'm considering a small segment of Kikuyu grass that touches my neighbors property to keep grass type competition low and maybe a small pad of something else for variety sake. So much on my mind and the lawn season will not stop all winter; hope to keep you entertained during those dreary months this season. You are right, for us lawn geeks doing everything at once on one day feels inadequate and just wrong but I always have to remember to make videos for the non-geeks too , those who don't want to go deep; thanks for watching this one and all the others the proceeded it Ray!

Love your videos, Brian. Overseeded on 10/1 with Black Beauty Ultra (California - Zone 9B) and lawn is coming in nicely. However, I cannot stop these city squirrels from digging up my newly growing lawn (also my neighbor's cats from pooping on my lawn). Any suggestions to help prevent these pests from ruining my lawn?

Animals are frequently the hardest things to deal with in a new lawn. You could cover the area with sheer frost blankets (garden stores frequently carry these this time of year) until the new grass tillers out and thickens up a bit. It's annoying to do but it can work. rolling out a straw blanket can help a lot too but the mess of the straw is also annoying for lots of people to handle. Or you could just expect damage during this phase and then fix those spots in the Spring if they don't fix themselves through the rest of Fall. A lot of Lawntubers make viewers feel like perfection as fast as possible is the goal while I try my best to let my viewers know that gradual improvement over time is a better goal, it's less stressful. This year I dealt with moles damaging two different new lawns, each time they made a hill I just scooped up some of the dirt and squished the rest of the mound back down with my foot and in a matter of weeks you couldn't even tell the damage was done. My neighbor had the same problems when trying to establish a new lawn via seeding. For cats he would trap them and then dispose of them. For the squirrels he would bait them with those square, green blocks of rat poison placed around the yard.

Great video! Very informative. Can you (or have you) make/made a video on this subject that will absolutely do the same thing for a Zoysia lawn. I need help. I've tried seed, plugs, ran soil tests, used every kind of fertiliser - not much results. Is Zoysia just that difficult. All my neighbours have Bermuda, and that seems to flourish. correct, most weed killers will say to wait a month after application to drop seed to ensure best germination and seedling establishment rates. I usually wait around 10 days or so myself and don't feel like I need to wait longer. This experiment however was to do do everything in one day because many people don't want to come out multiple times per season to treat a lawn. The germination of the seedlings may be reduced a bit but it's still possible to get the job done all at once.

Mesotrione acts like a pre-emergent in this case to weeds but not grass. Alao it has only a short lived effect of hust a few weeks so it will wear off much quicker than standard pre-emergents. The Mesotrione will stop only a minority of grass types from growing from seed but not the commonly seeded cool season grass types like tall fescue (which we used on this lawn), rye, or KBG. Good question!

This is a very minimal approach to tending to a lawn. It's far better than doing nothing but it will help. Best for you and most everyone who has a ton of weeds in their lawns though is to apply pre-emergent in Fall, (even now works, novemebr is better than nothing) then again around the 1st of April. Apply FeHEDTA weed killer now before grounds freeze or apply chemical herbicides if your temps are still high enough to kill whatever weeds you still have growing in the lawn. Fertilize the existing grass with synthetic nitrogen in small dose now and then again in late March then move to heavy applications of organic nitrogen in mid-Spring (mid May) along with grub preventative in late May or first of June followed by a heavy overseed of your lawn in late August to early Sept. Lawns can usually be repaired quicker than most people think without tilling to start over...of course that's an option that I've featured on this channel and done on project lawns so it's all about your preferences and level of commitment to following a plan through.

Sure didn't, wanted to show only the basics here. Seed will germinate when left uncovered just takes a bit longer. One time a year lawn care people will find this more palatable but of course covering would make for more even (fast) germination.

possibly I should have mentioned that mesotrione will whiten some grasses temporarily but I focus on long term stuff on the lawn on this channel and although I try to stay more detailed than the average lawn channel I can't say everything in each video otherwise every video would be an hour long - no joke. There is so much that I feel like I gloss over in my videos. Some of my vids are targeted at more knowledgable audiences while others (this one) are targeted more towards beginners. In beginner oriented vids you can't really address everything without overcomplicating the topic. I err on the side of extra info but have to draw the line somewhere and that's why these comments are so important! Thanks for bringing this up; anyone new to lawn care that doesn't know this does now; some grasses will bleach a bit but it's short lived. Over a longer period of time it all ends up looking better and that's the goal, gradual improvement.

It will negatively effect germination rates but it won't stop germination completely. It's best to separate the two but if you are ok with the impaired germination rate and need to do it on the same day then it's fine. We're already seeing seedlings so that's what we're after gradual improvements.

I thought that after applying 2,4-D you needed to wait multiple weeks (at least after a few mows) before spreading grass seed on the lawn. But in this video you sprayed 2,4-D directly on the grass seed 😮. Doesn't 2,4-D impair seed germination?

You are correct that weed killers can impair seed germination but they won't stop it completely. It's far better to spray weed killers and then wait upwards of a month to seed but that's just one of those "rules" that can be broken if you understand why you may need to break it and what the consequences are. Many people do nothing to their lawns every year so taking more than a single day each year to do lawn applications may seem ludicrous to them - those are the people that this video is geared for. Also, just for clarification we didn't apply 2,4D to the lawn, the herbicidal combo contained different active ingredients. Thanks for your comment; I'm sure it will help educate a bunch of people over time.

@@TurfMechanic Right thanks for that. In Canada we're not able to buy mesotrione products, so 2,4-D was all I could get my hands on. I did a major overseeing project over weedy lawns, and I bet the dump truck of triple mix contained weed seeds too. I know 2,4-D affects weed foliage, so it wouldn't help much for those weed seeds anyways at the time of seeding. But how soon can I spray 2,4-D after the grass seed is down and starts germinating? Because my weeds outgrew my rhizomatous tall fescue seeds 😆

Round up is a whole line of products. The active ingredient that causes cancer and kills pollinators is Glyphosate. It’s sold under other names as well. Always check the list of active ingredients on the label.

Good comment because it brings up a point that some people don't realize, RoundUp is simply a brand that makes many different products. You are referring to Glyphosate which is arguably the most well known active ingredient used in non-selective vegetation killers that were made extremely popular by RoundUp in the past. The product I used in this video was not a non-selective vegetation killer and did not use Glyphosate even though it fell under the RoundUp brand name. The RoundUp For Lawns product used in this video is not what you are thinking of, it uses the same active ingredients used in many other common OTC weed killers from all of the other brands while not including glyphosate.

That's fine, you don't have to use anything with that name on it; choose any other brand on the store shelves of your local store and they all use the same active ingredients. Just stay away from glyphosate as an active ingredient if that's what you are bothered by. If you watch more than one of my videos I regularly talk about active ingredients and I don't emphasize brand. If you understand the active ingredients used in these products then most of the brand differences are a moot point anyway.

I am pulling my hair with our lawn especially the north-northeast side of the lawn. In 2017 I purchased a cubic yard of fill-dirt and soon after I purchased another cubic yard of "Erth Food" kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ_JkH2aes2IoqM I spread a bunch of top soil all over the lawn; in 2018 I planted Classic Saint Augustine Sod in the whole front: in 2019 we did Picket Fence builds, in 2020 hurricane Sally hit and destroyed the picket fence and the north-northeast side of the lawn basically died off due to the raw sewage that was running through the neighborhood when the county opened the lift stations due to flooding etc. [Taking care of the property for me is a "thankless task", but on some days it is "therapy": I am doing my best to get through the day. I am thankful my parents are still alive, but they are in their 80's, but damn everything in regards to maintenance and repairs on this property ie like falling in bottomless pit - Now go watch that movie "Money Pit"! Everything is aging about the same time! I am busting my ass here - this is the toughest job I ever had in my life and I am not getting paid!

My neighbors are real "stick in the muds" - on one side the neighbor try to stop the natural flow of storm water runoff and basically built a earthern damn with out old fence - after the new fence was built and Sally caused the picket fence to lean towards our property - after hiring contractors to reset the picket fence perpendicular I also had them cut approximately 4-inches off the bottom of our picket fence - our picket fence is no longer a dam. The other neighbor directs the storm water runoff towards our direction - those long tubes from the downspouts

It's certainly not the advice I give to most of my audience but IMO it is acceptable to do all this in the same day if you have no intention of ever doing lawn treatments more than one day per year. I've got multiple videos on this channel dedicated to the topic of uncovered seed germination; this year in fact I grew an entire lawn from uncovered seed...and as for the weed killer stopping baby grass from growing that is a risk that were taking however we already see new grass growing so although seed germination may be stunted it hasn't prevented the new grass from growing. As I said in the video I prefer to wait 10 days after week killer application to seed but best germination potential is usually after a 30 day waiting period.

Interesting comment Fiona, are you considering the ingredients in the RoundUp For Lawns product we used which didn't use glyphosate typically associated with the roundup name? Also, Mesotrione is a fairly standard lawn chem used at time of seeding. Only a handful of grass types that are not commonly seeded by casual lawn owners are severely stunted or killed by Meso. Perennial Rye, KBG, Tall fescue can all handle Mesotrione just fine at time of seeding. As for killing weeds and dropping seed on the same day see my comments I just made to ShoreTrade above. It's not the best course of action but it can still work out if you have the right expectations.
