Despite liking Yukimura more, he was never a general like Zhao Yun. Yukimura only had more significance in the Battle of Sekigahara and the Siege of Osaka (he was BADASS in both), but Zhao Yun had a longer and more successful career.

@@TheNightowlGaming Just remember DW Series is Historical Fantasy so some of the stuff that happens in the Games did not Happen or at least with certain characters that appear in those battles example Sun Quan was just a child during Hu Lao Stuff Guan Yu actually never really accomplished many of his feats and was kind of a jerkass, Cao Cao i believe never really fought in any battles, But if you are going DW and SW Lore My Money is On Zhao Yun cause i believe that after Liu Bei died and Jin more or less took over he was still fighting despite being in his 60's to 70's Yukimura historically began his career after Nagashino and Other Significant battles but he fought until he was at least in his forties and died at Osaka, Plus Yukimura's SW Incarnation is basically The Samurai Version of Zhao Yun lol so if not for Zhao Yun Existing Yukimura likely would not even be a character

Yukimura never became as successful since the odds were always greatly stacked against him. While being a daimyo, the Sanada was never a major player, unlike later Shu. In a real life battle, Yukimura will win easily despite Zhao Yun's abilities, since he has tactics learnt from his father, and he can use a fr***ing musket lol.

Sanada Yukimura was not at Sekigahara, he and his dad were defending Ueda Castle from Tokugawa Hidetada which delayed the latter from joining the battle against the Western Forces. That’s the second time the Sanada smoked the Tokugawa at Ueda Castle.

Loved the analysis of both characters! Both are awesome in their own rights, especially with how they are portrayed in the games, but I would give my vote to Zhao Yun! Love SW a lot (sometimes prefer it) but bias aside Zhao Yun has just so much going for him through his history! Yukimura is no slouch but overall I still would say after a fun display of spear combat from both, Zhao Yun wins! Great vid as always Nightowl!

Honestly the personalities of these two men are similar; I would honestly go as far to say they’re two sides of the same coin. Zhao Yun and Yukimura Sanada would have been a legendary fight had they existed in the same place at the same time in history. Great video NightOwl! One thing I realized in the Warriors Orochi 4 was that Zhao Yun countered Yukimura Sanada when he was not transformed yet while Yukimura Sanada was indeed transformed,. Just something I kind of overlooked the first time i saw that scene, it was not until this video came and I realized he stopped Yukimura deity form in his base form granted he was wearing the bracelet/armlet but still... he was in base form NOICE

I fell like that if we consider Spirit of Sanada veteran oldest Yukimura he would've a greater advantage over Zhao Yun, to the point I've heard people say that gameplay and moveset wise is one of Koei Warriors strongest (some even comparing him to Lu Bu). Meanwhile Zhao Yun gets not huge boosts tier wise in any similar fashion. He having fought Lu Bu doesn't help much in here since he either has help by his side, like the 3 Shu brothers, or just loses; Zhang Liao is a better case, but he is beast in his later yeras and mainly fighting Wu, by then he never fought Zhao Yun again; good but not amazing. For all purposes, Yukimura fights against Tadakatsu gives him as much points as Zhao Yun Lu Bu case (at least his fought Tadakatsu more evenly eventually), if he we count Kotaro due to Hojo battles this covers Zhang Liao (arguably way more, since some SW games display Kotaro as inhuman, in SW3 ones, he is at Keiji level, solo armies when all/most allies surrendered, can destroy fallen trees with his clawed hands and, as shown in Empires Hojo story mode, even keep up with horses charges). If the focus of this is who would win in a 1-1 duel based on the above, then Yukimura has an edge. Also I think Yukimura intelligence has been downplayed here. Yukimura had high degree of inteligence and tactics during his service under his father even in the earliers years, and during Osaka he built the defenses of Sanada Maru to cover for the castle weakest side, employing castle defense formations together with fire weapons; and actually hold off the huge Tokugawa advance, to the point where Ieyasu in real life and many of the games wins due to others strategies and exploting other less capable enemy officers and taking advanatge of Toyotomi lower numbers. Heck, in many games other than SW (doesn't count as feats for the vidoe but show how Koei overall potrays him) he is highly regard in military tactics affairs (in Warriors Orochi 3 he and Kanestsugu out perform Shingen and Kenshi combined, in Nobunaga's Ambition he usually has high INT stat) He really only becomes passioante/emotional and doing a final charge once he realizes that is nothing else to do besides trying to kill Ieyasu, and even then it is arguable he is only doing that for Samurai honor since he knows they have no way to win in the long run (killing Ieyasu would at that moment just make the Tokugawa temporarily retreat). The only game I think you can put Yukimura as overly emotional is both 4, since they need to balance his personality with Nobuyuki, and even in that one once he gets to Osaka he had mature enough to only go on a blaze of glory once all else failed. Even if the point still goes to Zhao Yun it feels like a disservice to do it based on how mentioend in the video. One last factor to be considered: the ups and downs in their historical/in games battles and both get reconigtion by their service and as they are shown: Zhao Yun starts good, has his peaks on the middle, with Changban up to Shu founding and hanzohong battles, making him recongnized as a Tiger General and formidable views by Wei, but couldn't prevent Yiling disaster despite having even odds vs Wu and despite his veteran status and decent help in the start of the 1st Nothern campaign his contributions were limited and left with little fanfare to the point if he didn't participate wouild've done little difference; Meanwhile Yukimura has the earlier yeras more average-harsh (depending what we consider of Kawakajima -Nagashino), but he just keeps growing, becoming good by post Nobunaga while fighting Tokugawa and Hojo major clans. Finally was seen as amazing, as during Sekigahara he could fight back Tokugawa superior odds, to the point some believed that if he and his forces was with Mitsunari they could've won or minimized damages (hence the what if in some of SW games); to the dread in his last years as during Osaka, he was carrying the Toyotomi, Ieyasu even mentions that he was his greatest struggle since Shingen fearing him greatly. When both are compared, Yukimura is way closer in a comparision to both dread warriors (Guan Yu. Zhang Fei, Lu Bu, Zhang Liao,...), where you arguably can put Zhao Yun, but also as in key figures where they could've turned losing battles in great victories or minimize losses (Sun Jian, Zhou Yu, Guo Jia, Fa Zheng) that are pushed as amazing as the former group. While both are seen as poster boys, Yukimura is usually shown as a bigger deal than Zhao Yun. Overall.while there are places where Zhao Yun , Yukimura would be just the better overall. Even with advantages in experience and impossilbe feats, those don't prevent Zhao Yun to lose against someone of Yukimura caliber, as he also fought formidable opponents that at the very least rival Zhao Yun's ones or even Zhao Yun himself. Zhao Yun being way calmer and less propense to all- or-nothing and emotions matter less since Yukimura would need to be put under desperation and Zhao has not leverage to affect him in such a way during a duel; If we are talking about it's application in a bigger battle, it would'nt exempt him from losing since Yukimura had way major worse odds and still got close enough of Ieyasu, so assuming more evenly scenarios he could still beat Zhao Yun in a final charge, while I cannot say the same about Zhao Yun (whose true edge be better at escaping/retreating, so he would survie but loses anyway). When we consider the potrayal overall in their main games, and thanks the boost from end Spirit of Sanada as a sure differential, Yukimura should be the winner more often than Zhao Yun.

Even though I like Yukimura FAR more than I like Zhao Yun(I'm just not a fan of his at all and think he's become shoved down our throats as the DW poster boy), the undeniable fact here is that Zhao Yun's longer career is what gives him the win. He had more time to accumulate more feats and accomplishments. This is by no means to say that Yukimura was a pushover. Far from it. In all of his battles, he was HIM. Just saying: It says quite a lot when even your enemies recognize that you are indeed HIM. Yukimura was a complete beast on the battlefield and proved that with every battle he was in. Now I will say that he is a better LEADER than Zhao Yun. And as far as straight up combat skills go, I don't think one really outpaces the other by a large margin when you really break it down. But again: What ultimately gives Zhao Yun the win is the fact that he had the longer career.

How about Mitsunari Ishida vs Sima Shi? They both are intellectuals leaning towards both strategy and leadership positions, both have a bad rep in the historical records but have been reassessed more recently and have defenders nowadays (Mitsunari especially), both inherited their positions from someone else and carry that person’s dreams as well as their own for the future, and they share some personality traits even if their values are quite different. Both Mitsunari and Shi are also notoriously tricky to play, but absolutely decimate the battlefield when you know how to use them. It could be a fun matchup!

Great video, Nightowl! Even if I have never played Samurai Warriors before, I commend Yukimura for his role in the franchise so far and excited to see what Koei will do with him come Samurai Warrior 6. As for Zhao Yun, he is one of the GOATs of everything DW...That is undeniable enough. Sure doesn't have an exclusive game just for him, but he does have his own movie called Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of a Dragon which dives more into his personal side. Maybe the possibility of a Zhao Yun DW spinoff game is not long after DW10...Hell, make his kids Zhao Tong and Guang playable for enhancement to his personal side, not just the fighter side of his character.

If you say Yukimura recklessness is what makes Zhao Yun the winner then I honestly think Older Yukimura from Spirit of Sanada wins. We know from when himself and his farther was banished Yukimura learnt alot about patience and strategy from Masayuki that reflected in those times having feats regarding his strength with the spear and intelligence. Regarding that Yukimura clash with Tadakatsu in SW3 is a very young one at that point in his life (disregarding in history he shouldn't have been born atp) which would explain how eager he would be to prove himself and being reckless. Also I don't necessarily agree with how Yukimura dying having to do with anything in this hypothetical 1v1. Seems more like an argument that would be used for who has the greater legacy honestly. (Also yea you did really good of keeping bias out even tho I do feel some claims you made wouldn't have any effect in the actual fight)

⁠@@TheNightowlGaming if I was to give a more in depth view of them both(and it hurts my soul to do so because I love Yukimura) my score would look a little like this. Historical information: Yukimura’s is definitely impressive but what holds him back is the fact that it’s pretty short as opposed to Zhao Yun who was active into the 70s Winner: Zhao Yun In Game feats: much like their historical information what makes me give this to Zhao is the fact that for the most part he did all of his feats(even though some of them are embellished). In Yukimura’s case, his short career once again bites him in the butt as they had to make him a placeholder for his Uncle’s since he wasn’t born yet(realistically he doesn’t show up until around the first battle of Ueda Castle. Winner: Zhao Yun Franchise impact: while Yukimura does have his own Musou game, they made a main line game without him, that’s never been done to Zhao Yun(he also has his own game). Winner: Zhao Yun Martial arts and intelligence: this one is a tie for me as I give physical ability to Zhao and intelligence to Yuki. X factor: I give this one Yukimura. His story is incredibly inspirational and you can’t help but feel drawn to him and want to see him succeed. Overall, my winner is Zhao Yun but I do love them both lol

I've been behind Zhao Yun since Day 1 in the Warriors Orochi days. It was always scary whenever I fought him (one time when he chased me ALL OVER the map on 1hp). I like Yukimura too but he's just not nearly as clean as Zhao, so I'd go with him as well. Wouldnt surprise me if he was Marth's older brother. _ANOTHER HAS FALLEN TO MY SPEAR_
