There are still a couple. Thorgi Arcade made a full series retrospective, he talks about the lore in it, but also about all aspects involving the games, from behind the scene production to gameplay and reception. Roflemonger made one focused on the lore. There are others in spanish and portuguese as well, if you speak any of these languages. But I think this is the best one about the lore, so far. Very well done.

Orochi Saga: Great plot, great back stories of the characters, overall a great beginning and a great saga! NESTS saga: Too many information, messy plot, unfinished stories although I can see it being very interesting if it was done in a more creative way. Ash saga: Too little information, the opposite of NESTS. This saga had huge potential, we could have seen those from the past closer, their personality, their gameplay, their back story but unfortunately most of it was kept only in cutscenes. Overall a very simple saga. New Beginning saga: Seems very promising so far. It mostly focuses the excitement on previous deceased characters that return to life. I still feel the lack of plot and the sense of a simple story without many major twists, yet we have more to see until the saga concludes!

Love the effort since I was looking for the lore of KoF games to understand it and found that SNK was already to trying to weave a solid narrative with it's KOF: ALLSTARS game where they are trying to keep to the main story as per games and also tell a new story while keeping continuity intact(events are its own story so not really filling in for main story) so check it out if u are interested in the game👍 They even split the game into chapters based on yr. I get that its a mobile game and if u dont like it but atleast for the story give it a shot , its pretty faithful to the story of games.

I felt that their is Money to be made in a full KOF Reboot where you take Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury and make them fully canon to the series. I feel this would add some much needed depth to the series, the biggest Problem you'd have is Art of Fighting takes place a decade plus ahead of Fatal Fury however if you reboot the series you can retcon this and have Art of Fighting take place at the same time as Fatal Fury with some changes to the storyline. This would make Fatal Fury: King of Fighters the 1st KOF game in the series effectivly making it KOF91. Considering the characters in both these game series are apart of the larger KOF series i think a full reboot would be great to freshing things up for the current fans of the series but also help draw in new fans with a much fuller story.

@@NeoGeoNow It wasn't a mistake, they dont have planned those stories because they were doing everything as the games goes around like a mangaka, Fatal Fury was the first but then AOF story was placed before, and there are many incoherencies, KOF is more like an Anime, Gods, Clones, Time-space alteration $hit. Fatal Fury and AOF was more terrenal stuff, kidnapping, revenge and redemption stories. KOF only works cause is a dream match, otherwise is ridiculous Kyo or Iori can have the power to match the Terry and Ryo in their original storyline when they are damn monsters, it works in KOF cause they are more comedy relief, but in their series is another story.

Also Ikari Warriors( ralf-clark) and Athena the game(Kensou- athena) are in a different universe and came before kof. It started like a dream match idea with simple endings for each team. They had no idea it was going to be that big.

Okay, to break down the reasons KoF XIV - XV even happened at all: Because Ash went about about and mucked up the timeline of his universe, and because Elizabeth either couldn't or wouldn't forget Ash ever existed, it created a paradox... This led to not only the retroactive emergence of the so called 'Amplified Specters' like Shun'ei, but also weakened the boundary between worlds when the multiversal immune system went into overdrive to try and correct the paradox Ash and Elizabeth unwittingly caused.... leading to a few displaced souls from other worlds ending up into the KoF world in time for the only KoF tournament NOT hosted by an evil douchebag or someone with an ulterior motive. Seriously, Antonov is a really good guy. Now, as was mentioned earlier, souls are a big thing here... and souls power certain beings... dead, powerful souls. cue Verse, vanguard of the ACTUAL 'big Bad' of the current arc. I quote Big Bad here is that, unlike Orochi, the being that gets summoned in KoF XV isn't really evil so much as acting on its instinct to 'correct the world'. In this case, the world suffering the oddly minor paradox caused by the events of the 'Those From the Past' arc where Ash erased himself but Elizabeth didn't forget him... that whole thing, oh... and probably all the boundary between worlds weakening bit too. Again, think of it all as an immune response going into overdrive... So, yeah, 'correcting the world' in this case means purging the world so it stops screwing with the multiverse.... that's basically it.

Ash Saga is where things got complicated but you got some part of the story wrong K and his team was the one who confronted Chizuru and Maki and also the one who officially defeated Mukai. Ikari Team, on the other hand has officially became the KOF champion in 2003.

As much as I like the story of The King of Fighters I think SNK wasted a lot of opportunities in terms of the story. For example, making Robert and Yuri an official couple like in Art of Fighting 3 and making Kasumi the love interest of Ryo (just look at Kasumi's ending in AOF3 it's obvious that she started to have feelings for the blond guy). After all Robert wears his AOF3 costume in KOF 96. Another opportunity that SNK missed was about the destruction of Southtown at the end of KOF 2000, they could say that because of that horrible event is that they founded Second Southtown (the city where Terry and Rock live in Garou MOW). The first KOF Maximum Impact was another wasted opportunity, it could easily be in the timeline of Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting, say that KOFMI1 takes place after the death of Geese and before the events of Garou MOW, I say this because Terry had his Garou suit as alternative and Rock was a teenager. About Ash Saga, since they were with that time travel stuff and Hayate is seen as playable in KOF XI and as a cameo in KOF XIII in Takuma's dojo, they could say that due to Saiki's travels and the use of the Time Gate, it brought as a consequence to bring characters from other times to the present. Those are some of my crazy ideas 😊

In kof2003, officially, Chizuru created the maki clone/illusion. The kusanagi clone fighting for kagura is not canon. Though a Kyo clone running around in that time frame is possible. We never knew what happened to the nests kyo clones.

lol it’s not because of smash but because he’s basically the face of SNK. He’s the first protagonist from SNK’s fgs. Think of how Ryu is to Street Fighter. Fatal Fury was for a while more popular and had more cultural significance before SNK blended the timelines by combining FF and Art of Fighting into King of Fighters. Terry alongside Mai, and Haohmaru are basically iconic symbols to SNK like Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li are to Capcom. He’s also got a simple but really cool design, and his iconic English lines draw a lot of people into him.

I think Angel and K9999 are my favorite characters in the lore here because it's like, after so long dealing with a ton of sci-fi loredumps and long droning explanations, the game just decides to show these two mfers visibly getting sick of NESTS, seemingly killing their boss, calling them nerds, and telling them to f*ck off. It's so cathartic seeing it in game after how these arcade modes were paced. Kula's reaction is understandable and fair, and she's neat too, but I'm sitting there like "Shush, sweetie, the adults are cooking".

Because KOF 98, 2002, and XII are non canon titles. They are called Dream matches in KOF lore. They do not have any canonical story. For example, in canon, from KOF97 to 99 Kyo was missing, Yet in KOF98 you can play him.
