The mix is still there. It is just that when foreigners show up and see so many people of one kind, they assume that they are all that--just one culture. They have not yet acquired the Kenya eyes given that in most of the places they come from the mixing of cultures and peoples is very rare. Eastleigh still has a bit of everyone.

The Somali community ranks as the fifth-largest ethnic group in Kenya, and it's intriguing why this distinction exists between Kenyan Somalis and Somali Somalians. Additionally, Kenya is home to other Cushitic-speaking communities like the Rendile, Oromo, and Borana, making it challenging to distinguish them from the Somali population.

Remember when the govt of Kenya had a boundary dispute with Somalia, they Eastleigh population threatened the then Kenyan government. That said majority of Kenyans are ignorant, greedy and gullible, that why Somali leaders are pushing for opening of the border, issuing of citizenship to Somalis for political mileage while Kenya does not benefit at all, Alshabaab have infiltred the refugee population, Lamu and northern Kenya are controlled busy Alshabaab. That said there are over 2 million Kenyan Somalis in North Eastern.

Most outsiders struggle most with the intensity of diversities in Kenya, the varieties of people who share a space. Most new arrivals to Kenya and Nairobi, especially those formed by western biases really struggle with this Kenya reality. It is something we should, really, really be proud of and also protect fiercely. hopefully, all the new foreigners coming in to continue with the Nairobi blend and mix will just enter into the mighty river that makes this precious and very human country special, in a humble way.

As someone who has lived in Nairobi for over 40 years and understand the history of Nairobi. It is wrong to say Eastleigh is dominated by Somali nationals. Even before the civil war in Somalia the Somalis from North Eastern Kenya were very many in Eastleigh and it was famous for Miraa trade.

This statement or observation by Afrikan traveller is not offensive at all as it goes to illustrate how Somalis have astute business approach. He goes on to explain how Somalis are down to earth and honest in dealings. As far as I’m concerned, Afrikan traveller spoke positively about Somalis. I’m sure if you were to also narrate about Kikuyus or Luos or any other tribe in Kenya, you will find yourself associating each of them with stereotypes and yet it doesn’t mean that you hate them .

Kenyans, Kenyans, please desist from ignorance. African traveler, I respect you but this one you goofed. Nwache, yes, Eastleigh is inhabitated by Somali ethnic gp with various dialects. Republic of Somalia or whatever you call it, is a country boardering Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti and has all this Somalia dialects. Across this imaginary colonial boarders, Somalis are found. Hence, you find Somali ethnic gps in Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Therefore, Kenya has a huge population of Somalia ehnic gps as citizens probably the 5th or 6th largest ethnic, occupying almost 45% of the Northeastern part boardering the Republic of Somalia. Now, this gp of Kenyan Somalis, settled in Eastleigh together with Boranas a while ago in my childhood days. Over a period of time Somali Republic became unstable and refugees flowed into Kenya as Republic of Somalians. Kenyan government accommodated them as refugees, some left others stayed and settled and are now are Kenyans. As Republic of Somalia detorieted politically, plenty os Somalians left, Diasporaian Somalians, partnered with Kenyan Somalis to invest and others who engaged in Piracy found abbot in Kenya with the loot. This period of time saw Eastleigh rapidly thrive. Outside the box, one cannot distinguish Kenyan Somali from Republic of Somalia, Somali. (Like Fulanis in west Africa). And this is where it becomes tricky for those who are ignorant. I've known Kenyan Somalis since childhood and they have been trading in livestock and transport system. As a Kenyan, it's unfair and unpatriotic not to give credit to Kenyan Somalis for the hard work seen at Eastleigh. African traveler, pls travel Northeastern of Kenya before calling yourself, 'the name". Note, there is Somalian, from Republic of Somalia and there is Somali, a group of ehnic ppl occupying the Northeastern part of Africa. Disappointed.

Salient points. A lot of Somalis came to Nairobi with Lord Delamare. My Dad took me to Garissa lodge as a kid to buy gold and dollars. I barely have the memories but I carried the cash in a bag 🤣.He was of the idea that Kenya will go into civil war. Somalis were paying the KANU govt to get IDs and Moi was happy to generate campaign money. The govt later tried to reject the said IDs. I remember seeing lots of them in Mombasa, they had a camp there. I guess the Swahili were less welcoming because they didn't stay. I remember Kiamaiko booming because of the goat trade from NE. I believe this was the main source of money for eastleigh. Piracy,Miraa trade and smuggling were recent occurrences. I travelled to Mandera once of out curiosity when it was relatively peaceful, before Al Shabaab menace there was the Shiftas. The place is Kenya only in maps but not in spirit. The peoples eyes were so fiery and you felt like they could spit on you. Kenyan Somalis are still Somalis.
