Good morning. We used pallets for so many projects in the 70s. Lucky ducks! I raised Indian Runner, Call Ducks and American Standard Toulouse Geese back then. Used a 400 egg Sears Redwood wet hatch incubator with 98% hatch rate. So much fun! I especially enjoyed the geese. The Toulouse are very tame if you hatch them or get them day old. They will bond to you and protect the homestead, but absolutely need to go inside at night. I am "almost" retired and will raise geese again. We are in the woods and have to build a very secure shed for them. How may eggs do you get from your Runners? I got 30 eggs in the spring from the geese. One every other day.

There's only one word for your ducks - Adorable! We had a skunk give birth under our house one year. She had two babies. Even when they don't spray they stink. I was afraid to close off the entrance to their underground nursery because I didn't want any dead skunks under the house. Eventually they all moved out and we repaired their door so they could never get back in again.

K&S, I have been watching and learning from your finely executed blog for weeks now. Thank you.! I am planning to move to your area of Mo. in a year or so, and would dearly love to hear how you legally manage sales of rabbits and chickens, the legality of crossbow use, and actual prices of services you buy there. I do wonder, since one of your homestead goals is long term sustainability in meat, why you do not have Muscovy ducks. I understand they are as effective as guineas for tick control, also for mosquito control, are prolific and very competent reproducers, once adult need very little feed if free ranged, and their breast meat is a good substitute for veal, the rest of them excellent for duck broth. Having had weasel, coyote, and skunk problems over the years, While, for drainage reasons I would not floor your new duck palace, I would put a skirt of hardware cloth from the lower edge of the outside plywood, down six inches and out about a foot all the way around to preclude digging under by pests.

Lesson learned the hard way and a long time ago ... build ALL small buildings and sheds on a skid platform. That way they can be moved and reorganized by only an easy towing to a new location. You can even make the skids so that you could attach wheels when you want to move it.

Just a suggestion for your new duck building- leave the pallet sides exposed in a section on two sides - this will allow ventilation and be helpful for your summer time temperatures. For the late fall/winter time you could have a piece of plywood cut to fit and use simple twist locks to secure them and leave them in place as needed. Great job of building the base structure of the duck house.
