The jerky is good. But a little tip from former military. Under stress 1 m.r.e. can last a full day. Entree when you can,brown rice later and so forth. Also have a chocolate bar. The m.r.e. will give you the calories all day and the chocolate bar will give you a burst of energy when needed most! Keep the chocolate inside the blanket

The nice thing about the chest rig for the radio is where your anntena ends up. I've noticed our structure guys are using an old style leather shoulder harness that keeps the radio low at the waist, same as on your belt. The problem being shielded radio waves. As long as you remember to turn around when your radio doesn't work you're fine. Lol. I used a chest harness in search and resq for many years and it does get in the way sometimes but for me it's worth the life safety aspect of my radio working. That said I have dropped the radio into a side pocket and used a remote antenna on my pack. Not an option if you have to deploy and want your radio under with you, but man does it work. Thank you sir, I love all your content. This makes me want to wildland again though.

I enjoyed the heck out of this dual video as I too was a volunteer firefighter. I did not do wildland per se but did do rural pasture land/farm land type and of course in town structure. I did carry quite a bit of the equipment that you have here. I served 25 years on my small town fire department.

Just a tip not to be a stickler but I’m watch guy and I think you might enjoy this tip. If you wear your watch behind your wrist bone it won’t move around on you, you won’t need it as tight, and it won’t hit the back of your hand. It’s also the proper way to wear a wrist watch.

Things have changed! I was on a fire crew with the Forest Service back in the ‘70. They gave us an worst International orange bags. I refuse to call it a back pack. No padding in the shoulder straps and no waist belt. Glad to see the evolution.

Heck sometimes 6 liters of water doesn't even cut it, really gotta suck down the water when it gets above 100. Worked for a state fire kitchen, loved it, but unlike those fancy caterers, no AC, swamp cooler, adequate shade or any proper ventilation, just a refer truck to duck into to cool down. Cooking massive amounts of food it's 110+ is pretty intense.

Couldn't agree more about the wool! I'm a total believer. I've had issues with hot, swollen feet and realized my skin reacts to anything synthetic. I wear darn tough socks year round now as well as merino base layers when it's cold. Pricey stuff, but you will never regret investing in it and my feet never get hot now. Plus if your socks ever wear out Darn Tough will replace them for free so it's actually cheaper in the long run!

A lot of Australia's terrain isn't forested as heavily around towns, therefore, we can rely on sheltering in our fire trucks because the terrain allows for that.

Im loving this. You should hold classes about this stuff. Im sure the recruits are instructed on everything fire and tools. Cody there is ongoing research on a hydration bladder vs canteens. The problem with the bladder is that while the FF is getting enough water he is not getting food to snack on because there are fewer or no breaks. Because of the work rates are going down. Consider having your crew stop work for 5 minutes every hour, throw off the pack and eat some nuts/gorp/jerky/power bars, and maybe swig some "electrolyte" drink. I carry a 1 qt canteen in a belt pouch just for this reason but I also carry a bladder. As a faller I carry eye drops in my shirt. And ibuprofen, noise and sun give me a headache. I also carry my cell phone (and necessary chargers). Of course there is also a chainsaw, Dolmar, axe, wedges, spare chain, and more.

When you talked about why you quit the fire dept you were spot on. I been a volunteer on three different fire dept and there all a like. One of the biggest problem I ran up against is paid firemen don’t want to work with volunteers due to the IAF and everything else you said happen in all the units I’ve been with. Keep on truck’n your doing fine.

He watches your videos, as do I, so we have another topic of shared interest. I especially enjoy specificity, so please go into detail on each item--not just the what but the why you choose what you choose. I'm sorry to hear that you are shortening the length of your commitment to fires from 14 to 7 days because it's people like you, the seasoned fire fighter, that is so very needed not just for your expertise in many aspects of fire fighting and training and assisting the next generation of fire fighters--perhaps even my nephew. On the other hand, I understand setting boundaries based on your priorities and values in order to balance all your obligations in life.

Cody, Saw your set of spare batteries at the top of the screen. You may want to consider or take a look at the Storacell instead of taping them together. It comes in a couple different sizes and provides a bit more protection for preventing accidental shorting. I use a couple different units depending on battery for holding my rechargables when out hiking.
