It is not hard to decide about watching a movie or not. If Gregory Peck is in it, it’s a movie worth to spend some time watching it. I started knowing Gregory Peck in a movie with Jennifer Jonse called Duel In the Sun filmed in 1948, 74 years ago. I saw the movie in 1954 and ever since I have seen every movie in which he was in except this one. I am very glad I got a chance to see this one in not wide screen, but on my iPad. Thanks you for giving me this chance.

I love these old movies! The innocence of this generation is wonderful. Watching Peck "fling" bullets with his revolver....priceless! Always removing the rifle from his shoulder to re-cock it (my first rifle was a Winchester and it was easy to cock in the shooting position). None of the horses ever getting shot. My grandfather was a cavalry officer (I am very old) and he told me "we always aimed for the horses because they were bigger targets....if the fall didn't kill the troopers, we'd get them on foot".

I saw this film, a long while ago, in black and white. It was good to see a slimmer Ward Bond in an undisciplined role. What a contrast to his later films, leading wagon trains. I wonder if Gregory Peck was as stiff as in his film roles, in real life. He once had the role of Horatio Hornblower, as a sea Capltain, and was equally wooden. However, the ladies, and film studios liked him, so he must have had a quality, that I never understood. This film was an unusual western in that it analysed the characters , in depth, of that group of men. Most enjoyable. Thanks for posting it.

I like Barbara Payton in this. And Gregory Peck and Ward Bond of course. Made in 1951. Jeff Corey is convincing as the old wizened scout and advisor. This film shows how difficult and costly it was to win the West from the Apache (and other tribes). Of course, it cost those tribes far more in the long run as they lost everything. But it was a real fight with wins and losses on both sides.

Barbara Payton had one of the most meteoric HW careers a pulchritudinous bleach blond female ever had. In 1949, the western screen loved her beauty and brashness. As Steve Cochran's moll in 'Dallas 1950', she was marvelous. But by 1953, her comet had lost its tail. Afterward, she was out of control and finally drank herself to death in 1967 at age 39.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! Barbara Payton's character should NOT have ended up with Peck. Some things cannot be unsaid. She was a terrible person for not listening. And if Peck really wanted her, he'd have made sure that she knew what really happened. By not forcing the issue before leaving the post, Peck had written her off. He should have stuck to that upon his return. Most men would, even though pickings are obviously slim out on the frontier. But hey, with the Apaches practically wiped out nearly to the last man, duty at that fort will be easy for years to come. There's no reason that Peck couldn't take a leave for a couple of months and head back to the East coast and find a bride. Sadly, there were lots of young war widows in the years that immediately followed the War of Northern Aggression. I see a bit of They Came to Cordura here in reverse, with "heroes" being shown to be the dregs of humanity. In the newer Cooper movie, the Medal awardees were shown to be lousy people. Here, the terrible people (for the most part) turned out to be heroes in their fight. Maybe I'm reaching here. The big question is why Peck's detail did not bring along a wagon full of water barrels for this siege rather than just four or five canteens per person. But we know why. If they'd come prepared, there'd have been no movie! Anyway, discovering a previously unknown Gregory Peck cavalry movie (even if there was no actual cavalry action - they fought as dragoons) was a great thrill. I'm happy I got to see this.
