Western Movie Colorized: Only the Valiant - A despised cavalry commander is unfairly blamed by his troop for the death of a popular officer and must redeem himself in front of his men during an Indian attack on the fort.
Only the Valiant (1951)
Director: Gordon Douglas
Writers: Edmund H. North (screenplay), Harry Brown
Stars: Gregory Peck, Barbara Payton, Ward Bond
Genre: Adventure, Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 11 April 1951 (USA)
Filming Locations: Gallup, New Mexico, USA
Storyline:
Capt. Richard Lance is unjustly held responsible, by his men and girlfriend, for an Indian massacre death of beloved Lt. Holloway. Holloway is killed while escorting a dangerous Indian chief to another fort's prison. The chief escapes. Knowing their fort is in danger of Indian attack, Lance takes a small group of army misfits to an abandoned nearby army fort to defend a mountain pass against the oncoming Indian assault. Their mission is to stall for time until reinforcements from another fort arrive. The men in this small group of malcontents, deserters, psychopaths and cowards all hate Capt. Lance and wish him dead. Much to their chagrin, the men recognize that Lance's survival instincts, military knowledge and leadership are the only chance the group has of staying alive.
Reviews:
"...I saw this movie when it first came out in France, in my hometown, 54 years ago, I was nine, and today I still remember each black and white frame, especially the black ones, because it was so tense, scary, those sneaking attacks through that dark pass in the mountain, the two soldiers, prisoners forced to fight each other by their captors, the last battle with the uncovering of the wagon with the Gatling in it firing away, the last fight between Peck and the chief, and the Happy End which let me take back my breath. I haven't seen it since then, and I don't know if it would be a good idea to see it again today, it was such a fabulous moment for the kid I was." Written by zatapatique on IMDb.com
"Gregory Peck and Gig Young are competing for the same girl and after Peck sends Young on a very dangerous mission, they blame him for his reasons. Feeling guilty, Peck goes on an almost impossible task of defending a fort, where they are outnumbered by the Indians. Peck chooses for this mission soldiers which he considers to be the scum of the earth and the actors that play these soldiers, Ward Bond, Lon Chaney Jr., Neville Brand among others, are excellent. The script is derived from a novel by Charles Marquis Warren who was a specialist in westerns, as a writer, director and producer. The idea of using this type of men as heroes inspired many films that came out later including "The Dirty Dozen" made in 1967." Written by tmwest on IMDb.com

"Big Country," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Captain Horatio Hornblower," "The Omen" and ""The Boys from Brazil," to name just a few of Gregory Peck's movie credits. My all time favorite actor. If he is in the cast the movie is gonna be worth watching!

It is not hard to decide about watching a movie or not. If Gregory Peck is in it, it’s a movie worth to spend some time watching it. I started knowing Gregory Peck in a movie with Jennifer Jonse called Duel In the Sun filmed in 1948, 74 years ago. I saw the movie in 1954 and ever since I have seen every movie in which he was in except this one. I am very glad I got a chance to see this one in not wide screen, but on my iPad. Thanks you for giving me this chance.

I love these old movies! The innocence of this generation is wonderful. Watching Peck "fling" bullets with his revolver....priceless! Always removing the rifle from his shoulder to re-cock it (my first rifle was a Winchester and it was easy to cock in the shooting position). None of the horses ever getting shot. My grandfather was a cavalry officer (I am very old) and he told me "we always aimed for the horses because they were bigger targets....if the fall didn't kill the troopers, we'd get them on foot".

I like Barbara Payton in this. And Gregory Peck and Ward Bond of course. Made in 1951. Jeff Corey is convincing as the old wizened scout and advisor. This film shows how difficult and costly it was to win the West from the Apache (and other tribes). Of course, it cost those tribes far more in the long run as they lost everything. But it was a real fight with wins and losses on both sides.

Just another full of action Hollywood action yarn with the United States Army fielding Winchester Model 92 lever carbines, which never happened, as the Indian wars ended long before John Browning developed the Model 92. I saw this film, a long while ago, in black and white. It was good to see a slimmer Ward Bond in an undisciplined role. What a contrast to his later films, leading wagon trains. I wonder if Gregory Peck was as stiff as in his film roles, in real life. He once had the role of Horatio Hornblower, as a sea Capltain, and was equally wooden. However, the ladies, and film studios liked him, so he must have had a quality, that I never understood. This film was an unusual western in that it analysed the characters , in depth, of that group of men. Most enjoyable. Thanks for posting it.

Barbara Payton had one of the most meteoric HW careers a pulchritudinous bleach blond female ever had. In 1949, the western screen loved her beauty and brashness. As Steve Cochran's moll in 'Dallas 1950', she was marvelous. But by 1953, her comet had lost its tail. Afterward, she was out of control and finally drank herself to death in 1967 at age 39.

Next Comment of Iraj is correct. A movie with Gregory Peck with drama and action is worth watching. Starts slow but builds up to becoming a good movie. Some notable actors. Love watching Lon Chaney in a western. I like to focus on the Characters as they battle Hollywood Indians. Enjoy the Show. Thanks.

What a cast, 1st rate. The Apache made their last raid in Arizona in 1924, and made at least 1 raid in Mexico in the early 30's. Somebody forgot to tell them they had been defeated in the 1880"s. Apachu means enemy.

At 1.32.14 mark when the pass exploded, it looks like Peck is wearing a brown hat and in the next clip it appears his hat is blue again. Also at 1.37.30 Ward Bond gets show with an arrow in his right shoulder but Peck removes it from his left.

Seems folks have forgotten that Gregory Peck played Adicus Finch in the Movie version of to Kill a Mockingbird. My English Teacher in High School showed our Class this Movie. We had to have Parental Appoval to watch it.
