When you go down the dizzying rabbit hole of Rolex watches for a few years, you eventually pop up the other side with a Rolex explorer on your wrist and a smile on your face. If you know, you know.

This watch is a collection killer. I’ve worn my 114270 for 7 years and it’s really hard to take off the wrist and rotate to others 😅 love it!

I also wear my 114270 everywhere in my city. I love how comfortable it is. I compared it to the newer reference but liked the proportions of the older model better. That said I have yet to see the 40mm model, which may look more balanced dial-wise than the newer 36.

Great video. You get to the essence of what the Explorer is all about. I have one gripe tho...the model is Explorer, not Explorer I. I very recently upgraded my '96 14270 to an unworn NOS '91 model, fully serviced by the dealer prior to purchase. The owning & wearing experience is sublime. And so it should be...it cost the same as a new 40mm on the Grey.

@RabbitWatchShop11 ай бұрын
The explorer has always been on my shopping list. I’m getting the Pelagos 39 on December of this year, so I’ll pick up an explorer in 2024. It’s one of the best, if not the best, models in Rolex’s current catalogue. And they’re relatively nicely priced on the gray market, unlike the Sub and Daytona.

Agree with most of your points. However, the new Explorer 40 (224270) is the Perfect Rolex. The 36 one is too small. The Explorer is so versatile and low profile and makes you feel calm and relaxed when wearing it.
@deevee822011 ай бұрын
It depends on your wrist size and style preference. My wrist is 6.75" and I wear my 14060 when I'm outside with my jeans on. When I go to some formal event, I wear my 16200. Something in between, it's my 114270.
@michaeltallsman274011 ай бұрын
I enjoy the classic 114270. I've been wearing it for almost two years now and find that the smaller size is just perfect for me. I tried on the older 39 and found that I could wear that as well on my 6.5" wrists. I think either 36 or 40 model is suitable depending on one's wrist size and preferences.
@ronpower779010 ай бұрын
Quality feel of the bracelet is just a tad better than a Seiko 5. Also if one wants to switch between the bracelet and leather strap, at least the 114270 isn't a good choice. The spring bars are to close to the case. Curved spring bars is a must. But they aren't as safe as the original ones. History aside, in bright daylight e.g. a Tudor Black Bay 36 feels much much better build and doesn't have the issue described above.

Do you plan to have Rolex service it, or is it better/cheaper to have a 3rd party jeweler service it? About how much does it cost to service, and how long can you reasonably wait between servicing? Maybe it's one of those "if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it" kind of things.

The Explorer is a classic do-it-all choice, but given how ridiculous Rolex is nowadays, i'd say that within the same general historical influences and size the Tudor Black Bay 54 took the place.
@WH-hi5ew9 ай бұрын
With an Explorer you could still get one off an AD though if you're prepared to wait... unlike say a GMT. BB54 though has 200m water resistance and is a few grand less, I need to try one on.

Keep it simple and straightforward. The perfect combo is a Explorer 40mm and a Tudor GMT (with the Tudor leather strap / buckle as well). Takes you from the crib to the grave.

Perfect! Well stated. I got mine recently from an ad after a 6 month wait. I couldn’t be happier with the watch. I wear it when I want. It seems to be a great choice for most all occasions. I do find myself swapping back to Casio, Timex, Seiko for tasks too risky to damage any of my watches or simply to mix it up a bit but the Explorer seems to check all of the boxes for a fine watch and will be around for many years to come.
