I had my blue dial Tissot Powermatic 80 Silicium about 10 months. I bought it brand new for £675. I wound it up one morning to find the winding rotor was spinning around with every wind of the crown and it felt really gritty. The shop I bought it from sent it under warranty back to Tissot for repair. I got it back about 5 weeks later. They had repaired and fully serviced it, and to my surprise they extended the warranty by another 2 years. I had the original Tissot watch box but the shop also gave me another box with a little cushion inside, because it’s a nicer box. To my surprise I was also given a smaller Tissot box, which I don’t know about until I got home. So, along with the service, repair and 2 years extra warranty, I also got 2 extra boxes, as well as the original. Now that’s what I call service.

I was very happy with both the dealer and Tissot's service, I've been wearing it regularly since and run the chrono feature a few times each week and so far it's running great.

The minute they start to keep time poorly or feel inconsistent when winding, I take them to a watchmaker. I've collected for a long time, and since KZbin I've seen a growing trend for talking about servicing watches, when in reality most don't need to be serviced as regularly as brands or KZbinrs suggest. Obviously...do what you want with your own watches, but that's what I've always done with mine.

I agree with you, I would not have had the dial replaced. I have the same watch, I wear my explorer 2 everyday. I never take it off, as a tradesman/engineer I get into a lot of dirty, rough jobs. My first scratch on the dial was the worst, But I have grown to admire them. As it reminds me of that moment in time and why I originally purchased this watch in the first place. To be my everyday tool watch that I can carry throughout my entire journey in life and when I’m gone pass down to my son. And believe me, the amount of abuse this watch can take is a true testament to its quality and investment value. All the scratches and future scratches tell a unique story. To anybody watching who are working towards acquiring an explorer 2, I can’t recommend it enough. I can’t get enough of this watch and now have a one watch collection haha I don’t think I’ll ever take it off. Just my 2 cents thanks for sharing this video Adrian.

Good decision Mr Barker. Very informative and helpful. I like how they broke down everything. The need to change the date disc because of tiny scratches and possible paint coming off is great. That attention to detail and keeping it transparent is confident boosting

That's not a bad price for the service. And quickly done. That service pouch is a new one! Nicely done.

I sent my Tag Heuer in for a service and asked for it not to be polished or fix any scratches as they all meant something to me, it came back so shiny it’s now not my watch I was furious!

Fascinating video I have a Datejust as a retirement present to myself It needs a service and your experiences have convinced me to stay with Rolex and not farm it out to any other watchmaker Quality costs but this is worth it Also love the travel case, warranty and the guarantee card 😊

Glad you didnt get the scratches/dents taken out, it adds to the watches story, love reading threads online of 50/60's watches that are absolutely battered but have so much story with them.

excellent update! Sinn currently has a 6 MONTH eta for servicing so it is surprising to hear Rolex had such a quick turnaround. Glad they were able to get ol' girl tuned up and back in the rotation.

Glad your Explorer II is back with you, there’s always a small hole in the back of your mind when a watch in your collection is away being serviced… and a feeling of satisfaction knowing it’s been professionally serviced at the OEM upon its return. I’m capable of servicing my own uncomplicated watches but still prefer to send them to the AD for maintenance if they’re relatively young.

I just got my explorer 2 black dial fully serviced and dial changed to polar at Rolex and the service was great and it’s nice to have the nfc card and warranty. I got the same discount by telling them not to polish the case. Congrats on having it back so soon.

Good to hear that Rolex care the utmost about their creations. Others high end watches do likewise. My 1974 Rolex sit in the original box since 1988 after the last service because for me is a trade off between pleasure to wear it and safety. Instead my old G-Shock roughness and precision compensated well for that.

Very important, if you ever drop your watch and break the crystal, pull the crown out to stop the movement!

Wow! I find the service charge high. I got my sub date for my 40th birthday. Let’s say I follow their every 10 year service recommendation, and live til I’m 90, I end up paying 30% of the purchase price in 4-5 services, this is ignoring the fact, that Rolex of course over that period are likely to double the current charge. But I agree, I would only bring mine to a Rolex dealer for service/repair too.

Literally nearly messaged you about the status of your Explorer yesterday! Great to see you’ve got it back. Pretty reasonable I’d say. Bet you’re happy to have it back! Another set of memories added to it. Enjoy.

Reasonable cost for service, less than I expected. Great call keeping the dial. Watch has too many memories and will 'most likely' never be moved on from.

The 12 inch buffing wheel on my bench grinder threw my Vostok Komandirskie GMT onto my workshops concrete floor whilst I was polishing some scratches from the bracelet. It cracked the 3mm crystal in multiple places to a depth of between .5 and 1 mm. Its still waterproof and now loses 20 seconds a day instead of 1. I didn't need to have the factory repair it of course and I re regulated it myself to +3 seconds a day.

Thanks, Adrian. Confidence that Rolex stands behind their product, and while not inexpensive, but within the luxury space it does represent a value.

I broke the pip off my sub almost 2 years ago at work. I repair equipment. My watch had about 3 months left under warranty. The movement was covered under the warranty, so they serviced the movement while it was in for free and the pip replacement cost I think a little under $200. I didn’t have any polishing done, I agree, little defects add to the character of the watch. I got it back and I was very happy, all was right with the world again.

Glad to hear the watch is back on your wrist and it didn’t take very long to repair. Wear it in good heath. I agree with you that leaving the dial and the case scratches was a good decision. It remains unmistakably your watch

A well executed video on a subject no doubt all here wanted to see and hear of your results! Love your honesty when discussing the results from Rolex and its costing. I wonder if Omega will be the same when my 3861 eventually requires a service and God forbid any accidental mishaps !!😮

Sounds like a very similar experience I had getting my dad's 80s Datejust restored as a Christmas gift. Only complaint I had was that there was not an option to upgrade the crystal to sapphire which was something my dad wanted. Other than that it was a very pleasant experience. His needed a bit more work as it had water damaged and he wore it doing everything from working on his cars to date nights out with my mom for 30+ years. New dial, hands, bracelet, bezel, crystal, movement work, and case work was around $1200 USD.

Love that you only got the "necessary" repairs done and that you kept as much original as you could. And that Rolex offers that as an option - one of my fears about getting my 112266 serviced has been that they'd polish it and replace the bezel and that in turn I'd lose so many of the "stories" of the watch that make it so dear to me. Very glad to know that's not the case, and to see that you've got your watch back with all of the memories still in tact. Cheers!

Not a horrible bill. Had a similar issue with my Yachtmaster and like you was surprised that it wasn’t as heavy of a bill as I had expected. Great call on keeping the story of the watch by not polishing or changing the dial, creates character and imo adds charm. Cheers-Mike

Got the call for the black Ex2 a couple of months back. This has been the only Rolex I've wanted from the current line-up apart from one day getting one in polar white. Thanks for sharing the service costs. While expensive, it's also reassuring. Congrats on keeping the history of the watch intact with scuffs and dings. If it gets handed down the family, those marks will be cherished one day.

Quick thoughts as the owner of a Polar 226570. Service and replacement wasn’t just reasonable, it was cheap in price. Agreed on the choice to not change the dial, but my OCD would constantly look at the scratches. Still, the choice you made was correct. If you’re not changing the dial, then definitely don’t polish. If you were changing the dial, I’d polish. You can’t accept one part of the watches story and not the rest.

I got my explorer 2 16570 from service. Complete overhaul, polished and a new bezel. I paid a little over 1000€. I must admit, it looks like a completely new watch. At first I had doubts because of the price but now I understand and very happy with the result.

That’s a good price for the service. Especially with the amount of components they serviced. Also I love how smoothly you took the bracelet off. Rolex/tudor bracelets are fitted on tight. It’s always a pain with a single spring bar tool.

Great Video Mr Barker ! So glad it's back in your possession. I would have swapped the dial out as that one aspect has a high determination of the value of the watch. You have the scratches to which definitely adds to the character, but in the future, if you fall out of love with the watch, you will take a huge hit in value with a damaged dial. Just my opinion.

I took my Sub 14060m to the Rolex Service center in Singapore, and they quoted me a service cost (without any parts changes) started from $1100 SGD and it would take roughly 3-4mths before it came back. My 14060m is currently 24yrs old, so it was due for a service, however knowing how many parts would have to be changed to ensure best running conditon, i took it to a local watch maker, and i got the service and part changes for $500 SGD all in (including a 12mths watch service warranty) and it took a week. Curious to know how much it would cost to service Rolex watches and downtime it would take in other countries.

I think keeping the dial and the scuffs is the right play, because of the two options available (keep/replace) the latter is irreversible. If you do want to move it on at some point, the replacement option is still open to you, but the keep-as-is option is only available once.
@JerryBauer-r5f2 ай бұрын
I am a big fan of keeping the character of a watch. I recently had my Omega serviced. It was $700 and took about 8 weeks. I did not want it polished. I explicitly instructed the AD with whom I dropped it off. But it came back polished anyway. Fortunately, at least in my opinion, some of the scratches were too deed to be polished out so they remain. Omega also retuned all the replaced parts, the hands, balance spring, crown, etc.
