Six young fashion lovers swap shopping for the factories and backstreet workshops of India to learn how the clothes they wear are manufactured.
Six young fashion lovers swap shopping for the factories and backstreet workshops of India to learn how the clothes they wear are manufactured. They start at the top, working for Shahi Enterprises in New Delhi, a multi-million pound factory that makes clothes for some of the biggest UK high street names. They learn to sew before joining the production lines where every worker has targets to meet. Supervisors patrol the lines and, at lunch, the sexes are made to sit apart. As unskilled workers they're paid around one pound fifty a day, a basic living wage in India.

Can we all keep in mind that this was a sweatshop where a camera team was allowed in. So it's obviously one with comparably good working conditions

So imagine what is basycly going on there in a lets say "secret places" if they allow the workers to sleep in a work place on the floor? These brits are right it's like a being a prisoner. It's so sad to wach I was crying all the time watching it ... and it's still going on in the same way even though we are already in 2021 ! If it's not frightennining I don't know what is .. this why I mostly by at second hands shops ... and last thing .. if I was like one of them ( these young people from UK) I would just I don't know chose one person from this factory and promise her to bring her to UK so she or he could have a normal life 😭

Amrita seems so callous and disregards other people's value and their lives. The moment she had to do seven hours of sewing machine training, she crumbled, but is okay with others going through misery ("it doesn't affect me if it's been made by a three year old or a fifty year old"). I hope she develops much more compassion for others as the years roll on.

Did none of these kids’ parents ever talk about things like this with them at home whilst they were growing up?? We’ve known for DECADES that this is where and how our clothes are made, I know this was 2008 because I watched it when it originally aired, I’m 48 now and we were learning about Disney sweat shops in Guatemala when I was in middle school in the early 1980s! There’s really no excuse for such painful ignorance anymore. They’re embarrassing.

Global economics plays a large role. If indian clothes were more expensive than chinese western companies would just buy chinese products. At the end of the day it's mostly western corporations who are profiting massively off of sweat shop labor and human suffering. If they were paid more, white people couldn't get as rich.

Greek companies open sweat shops just like this in my country. They do call them factories but the conditions are horrible. My mom worked in a clothing and a food one for years. My aunt still does. One of the girls was right though in what she said. If everyone stopped buying the clothes, the demand would stop, putting these people out of work. As little as they make, & as much as they have to work / live in the most horrendous conditions.. this is some sort of income to them. Take it away & they’ll have nothing - that’s the bloody sad reality of it all 😔 They need an intervention direct from either the supplier themselves or from the government (fat chance) - the employers take advantage too. Also - although some of these ‘kids’ might act spoilt the point of this series, I’m guessing, is not just to raise awareness on what really goes on in the clothing industry but for the younger ones to lose that entitled attitude & for it to be a real eye opener for them (which I think it has been for the majority). They will be acting like fools even if they were employed in the UK. And regarding Amrita, who claims to want to be a designer, I don't even know how she didn't value the experience of being trained in a factory by professionals.
