Working in Addis Ababa's Leather Industry | Blood Sweat, And Luxuries S1 EP2 | Only Human

The Brits leave Madagascar and head to one of Africa's poorest countries, Ethiopia, and its capital Addis Ababa where they join some of the thousands of locals who rely on the leather industry to survive.
In Britain today, what were once luxuries are fast becoming everyday items. From electrical gadgets to leather handbags and shoes, as more and more is consumed, products are increasingly disposable. Would consumers care more if they knew the human cost of making luxuries?
The Brits head to the isolated mining town of Ilakaka in Madagascar to discover where the gems and jewellery sold on the British high street come from. In the vast open-pit mines they join hundreds of workers in chain gangs digging for one of the most sought-after gems in the world - sapphires. When the back-breaking work becomes too much for James, Alexandria and Lucy they're shocked to discover the alternative - a makeshift 50-foot-deep mine shaft accessed by rope and pulley.
Soon it's not just the extreme working conditions and hand-to-mouth existence of the locals that shock the Brits, but the value of the rough stones compared to the expensive shiny jewellery for sale in Western shops. Will they have the same love for luxuries again?

Oscar over here like he's not doing the work since it goes against his values, but if you watch other episodes he just quits and leaves because he doesn't feel like putting in any effort or hard work. He quit his expensive school, he quits at most of these jobs - he's learned he can just quit whenever things get tough because he has his safety net of privilege and luxury he can run back to. That's something the everyday workers don't have, and he'll never understand. What's worse is I feel he doesn't think he needs to.

the thing with oscar is, its not about him being vegan. I’m a vegetarian myself and it was quite clear that alexandria and sam had no issue with that. what oscar doesnt seem to get is that he’s in a privileged position where he can choose whether he will or won’t eat meat. He is shaming the workers, who are poor and have no other options, for working in the leather industry. He thinks that he’s just a better person because he has chosen not to consume animal products, but he doesn’t see that most people don’t get that choice because of their cultural and economic position in life. he talks down and over people because he has somehow gotten the idea that he’s not equal but above others because of his “enlightened” way of life, while completely missing the privilege he has.

Best comment on here! I'm watching this series (from 2010) on the back of Seaspiracy (horrifying!) and as a vegan I was initially defensive of Oscar, even though he didn't give a good argument for his reasons. But he knows no different having being brought up in a life of privilege, yet through the series you can gradually see him growing in consciousness VERY slowly. I think he walks away from situations as it really hits a nerve. As you wisely point out consumerism and the workers economic position is exactly the problem, those communities DON'T have a CHOICE. Thank you for saying it so clearly, instead of just slagging him off like many of the other comments on here, as I have learnt from this important fact you highlighted.

@@janhamv1148 He also points out the bit about consumerism, but he himself works at Harrod's, a place that sells genuine leather goods. Contradictory, I find, to his beliefs as a vegan. And he HAS a choice to say no to working there.

Many people in the west only eat meat that is in neat pieces covered in plastic wrap. They don't like to be reminded that it comes from animals. If more people stop eating meat and wearing leather it will be better for the planet. One cow needs to eat 20kg of grass to produce 1kg of meat. Itv would be better to grow 20kg of vegetables to feed the world than for people to eat 1kg of meat.

100% with Oscar on this one. not the popular opinion here, but I am a vegan as well and by choice; I know that meat consumption is literally what is killing our earth and why we are seeing things like coronavirus and other outbreaks and pandemics. it's just a bad thing and there are too many people on this planet to be eating meat like this. I actually really love fish and believe fish were meant to be eaten by humans, but I also know our oceans are overfished and within the next COUPLE of decades, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, so I have CHOSEN not to participate in eating any fish or "seafood" anymore at all. I think people need to have a more global mindset because if everyone knew how bad the meat industry is not only for the earth but for health, and how horribly very sentient animals are treated, things would change very quickly. people do change their minds about eating lots of meat and then going to a strict vegan diet. we ALL need to do this if anyone wants a habitable earth for their children to grow up in (another area where I do not partake; I would NEVER subject my own child, my flesh and blood, and someone I am supposed to love unconditionally to a future that appears not even to be there as of now.). the meat bit is NOT an opinion, it is absolute fact. I could not deal with people whose argument for meat is that "it's nice." either. I wouldn't say an iq of 70, but the IQs of these girls cannot be higher than ehh ... 120-130. to me that is where I find most "problematic" people lie ... that is, they are just so preoccupied with their own state of being that they cannot see the forest for the trees.

all we say living in a third-world country is: ''we must do it to survive''! that's all we do survive!. when can we live and enjoy life when all we do is survive?

The ending made me so so so happy, hope there's more people around the world who have the money to and can travel help people who really need and deserve like this humble and beautiful girl. P.S. The only thing that makes a bit worried do they waste the cows meat? or do they sell it to feed people?

Lol, did u think they throw away the meat , in Ethiopia meat is very expensive .we only eat meat in holidays like 3 or 4 times a year. We love meat so much that we eat it row, but it is very scarce only the rich afford it .kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmnXpqipbrKbnqc

The natural leader is naturekind. The artificial leader is damaging the nature. This factory leader should be built from the ground. It is not a healthy environment for the workers. The owner is even hars to the workers. A stranger misstreating ethiopian people in their own land. It is possible to get parasites in your body while touching row cowmeet and skin with only hands. Ethiopia needs this kind of industry and people must have meat but the conditions must be better. My eloge to allmost all of you. Oscar do not show respect. He seems to be a selfish one with no knowledge abou the world and human relations...

Oscar is a spoiled brat. If the drama was left in Britain, then the focus could be on the realities of where consumer goods are coming from.

Seriously that Oscar constantly quits, is condescending, aggroant. Everything is a problem, he thinks way to much of himself, constantly critztising everyone but not looking at himself. He's constantly complaining, everything is a problem. He's way to pampered and is a quitter.
