42-year-old lab technician Barry Phillips is literally drowning in the remnants of his hoarding. An avid collector of all things TV-related, including hundreds of DVDs, VHS cassettes and TV memorabilia, Barry's harmless hobby has now become a living nightmare. Barry's living room, bedrooms, conservatory and even hallway are all crammed high with his hoard making it almost impossible to entertain guests. Now with the support of his brother Mark, Barry has called upon Nick and Abigail to help him get his life back, in what looks to be their toughest challenge yet.
Only Human celebrates and explores the unique and personal qualities we all have. Our channel offers a range of TV series and documentaries about human experiences and life journeys - while looking at the challenges life throws at us, turning ordinary people into everyday heroes.

If anyone did a design like this in my home, I'd sue them! Barry was being polite. His face said it all he hated it. I would hoard it on purpose just to hide that abominable design. It could have been so easy. Study Dr. Who and design his home after some of the sets. Though Barry has lost his collection, he would have walked right into a Dr. Who set rather than an episode of laugh in

I don't mean to be unkind, but the designer's make-overs seem to all end up looking cheap, garish and gimmicky, despite the money she spends. They never achieve any level of classic design or elegance, and all look frighteningly similar - no matter what type of structure she is working with.

All Barry needed was a neutral space with lots of storage and hidden storage. Something that will last trends and 'modern' living. He's clearly a muted type of personality and isn't interested in funky pieces. This designer is such a 90s/00s 'Changing Rooms wannabe', who needs to be designing beauty salons and the interior of wealthy people who think the expense they pay looks classy, when in actual fact it looks cheap, garish and tacky.

I'm upset this program doesn't include a professional in hoarding disorder to help Barry. His collection is not just stuff, it's his security blanket. He has a strong emotional connection to his collections. Without professional mental health support for Barry he may just gradually keep collecting and his house could return to how crowded it was before.

There was a professional involved. The hypnotherapist. I also believe that Barry would have been recommended to have ongoing counselling and that his very caring brother will make sure he follows up. However, I do agree that hoarding is an emotional/mental problem and redecorating is not the answer. Hoarders are seldom concerned with aesthetics and they certainly don't see their surroundings in the way other people might.

Emphatically speaking, the dark and gray paint is depressing and that trend needs to go. They are sterile and uninspiring colors especially when assisting someone suffering from a hoarding condition. I am disappointed because one's home needs to reflect their own personal charms and not a decorator's odd style superimposed on to them. A decorator should be consulted to help one discover their own style and help them develop a home they are happy to be in.

“It’s different” aka he hates it “Me, me, me” the designer thinks it’s about her What a load of BS. Poor guy gave up about 98% of his collection for a dull and depressing couple rooms and has been left with basically none of his collection whatsoever. That’s absolutely horrible. He should’ve been able to keep at least a few hundred more items after spending so much cash and dedication to his collection. Doesn’t need to be messy or cluttered. Have it stored in multiple large boxes and get to it when you can. The designer sucks. This was so sad. Guy is like me, and many others. Needs his collection and stuff to help his anxiety and mental health and it makes him happy. This obviously didn’t. Can tell by the multiple “it’s different”s and the tone. What a shame.

As a fellow collector, I think it will be important to _include_ his most important pieces in the design. Barry said it-- "It's like saying goodbye to old friends." Collections are like that. Many times, collectors have possessions in lieu of real friends. It must be handled delicately. Okay, including the Sixth Doctor in the sale was a really smooth move 😆 Very well done 💓 I love it!

True. 42:32 shows what would be nice to put in other rooms of the house if desired to add personality. The collectibles that are more valuable and more personally cherished can be placed on wall-hung decorative shelves as shown, decorative illuminated bookcases as shown, wall-hung shadow boxes, or in larger decorative curio cabinets. A smart, flat, floating shelf hung with a French cleat and adorned with decorative knickknacks is a great addition to any wall. Here in Arizona, I would go with the shadow boxes and curio cabinets because the dust here is simply hellacious. It settles on everything. It gets into every crevice. One needs to take down and dust everything every few days just to keep things looking decent. Unless of course, the person has a brand new house that was built using the complete sealing design with filtered make-up air being used to replenish oxygen and remove odors and CO2, along with an oversized HVAC filter box which is so big it can use a HEPA media without destroying the blower motor or compressor. Alternatively, one can just have a legit air purifier in every room. 😸 My mother moved us here from the East Coast, and she was happy that a secondary consequence of the move would be that our asthma would improve due to the lack of huge trees and fields of weeds and flowers blowing pollen out all over the place. How wrong she was. It's sooooooo much worse. 🤣🤣🤣 Jesus Christ. So yeah, definitely display the collectables to add flair and to allow yourself to actually ENJOY them, but do it in a manner that protects them/their value.

If Barry has a compulsive collecting disorder, or HD, simply removing his stuff and redesigning his home will not solve his problem. These "clean-out" tv shows are entertainment more than actually helping someone with a mental / emotional disorder that often has a genetic component. He needs cognitive behavioral therapy to help him work through WHY he has this compulsion and to create new attitudes and habits about "stuff". Otherwise, he will refill his home again in a few months. This therapy takes months, years, to be effective. Notice that none of these types of shows have follow-ups a year later to see if their "helping" actually worked?

This is rather upsetting. Berry seems to me to be ND. It's frustrating when they say "Doesn't it make you happy that you can see the walls?", what kind of gaslight is this?? lmao Sure it has come overwhelming to the point where it is dangerous, but some therapy with managing it would be a lot better than ripping it all away suddenly. This can be really traumatizing and make things worse. I'm a hoarder as well that is ND, it seems to me that he has an attachment to Dr Who. But just because I say this doesn't mean I know what to do, it's just frustrating that people have to be a certain way to fit into what others expect of them. Yes, it was unsafe. But I feel like there was a much better way to go about helping him. Shock therapy doesn't work for everyone.

I came here to say things, but I think everything I wanted to say has been said in the commentary section here. As a former collector I felt his pain when I saw the transformation. He's not an unreasonable person, and absolutely not a "hoarder" as we know it, the guy was actually fairly organized, he just didn't have the space - and he wanted space for his grandkids. Unfortunately I know this story far to well (speaking for myself here), you clean up your entire home to a showroom near hotel-like state, and while the first visits are nice, it all fades back to loneliness again. But I solved it myself by redesigning the entire house to my liking, it's been clutter-free for 2 years now, but the secret to my happiness with the clean and organized home is to have it my way, meaning not some hippy designer with a 70's thing going to make the place into a dark depressive flashback to the 70's on steroids, but a practical enjoyable place with lots of space and a feel like "I want to be there every day I come home from work". That place in this makeover is, gastly, dark, depressing and I wouldn't set my foot in it, I'd be depressed in 10 minutes there. And if I know him right (and I think I do, judging by 90 percent of the commenters in here) I'd say that has got to be the worst interior design I've ever come across.

Keep it Simple. Example: I have 5 book shelves. The only books I keep are ones that fit into these shelves. I only keep books by my favorite authors. I limit the number of authors I collect to 3. The other books are one-offs. I keep open areas for bookends and collectibles or knick knacks. If I buy a new book I must have space for that book on the shelf or I have to get rid of a book in order for the new book to remain. I donate my old books to the library or other organizations so that other people can enjoy them, too. I see it as a gift to others to donate my well loved and no longer needed books. If I have a need for sentiments I can take a picture of that item so I have it to look back on. I can also make notes about a book that I have read, why I liked it, what inspired me, etc. These things help me to love my things and not become a hoarder like my mom was. I love books. I love stuff. All kinds of stuff!! I could collect a million things but I choose not to so that I can enjoy what I currently have and just live day to day life without having too much to overwhelm me. I always seem to have things to donate and that's okay. New comes in and old stuff goes out. It's the way of life. And we have to accept that. Also, by not collecting all the things you can enjoy other people's homes and their collections. The internet is now a great resource for learning and reading everything!! Books on Kindle can keep you from creating a hoard or being bombarded by a hoard. You just have to make the decision to say I can let go. I can let go because I'm not going to be here forever and as my time is limited I should enjoy all that I have while I'm here. The rest of what I don't use can go to someone who can use it. I would like my items to remain in good condition until it is passed along to someone else. So I have to be able to keep my things and my spaces clean and maintained. I will not neglect my family, my responsibilities, my own life for the sake of my stuff. I can let go because I refuse to have so many things that overwhelm my family after I pass away. I can let go because when I look at my things they make me happy. I can let go because I want my family and friends to look at my things and it brings them happiness peace and fond memories. And if it does none of these things.... It has to leave. And I say good bye. 👋 I make sure the item leaves my home within 3 days. If you set a time limit you will find it helps you to stay on task and focused. And most importantly....If you need help ASK SOMEONE. 💜🙏💖

Isn't hoarding due to be put on the DSM as a mental illness?
@mannys9130

It's an OCD spectrum disorder, yes. Hoarders exhibit obsessive and compulsive habits/characteristics which collectively conglomerate to produce the hoarder and their hoard. :(

Why does this designer always use deep dark colors? Every show I've watched her do are small in sq footage, and some with low ceilings, she turns them into dark and even smaller dungeons.

Fantasy thinking: "My collection of toys/dolls/enter any obsessive purchases are worth a fortune." Reality: Any items purchased are only worth what someone at that particular time is willing to pay for it. Many times, hoarded items have NOT been taken care of and they aren't worth anything.

Recently I heard someone on social media refer to this type of "decorating" as, "Too crowded for comfort." Ironic, since people accumulate with the goal of living in comfort.

Clearing out clutter--absolutely makes sense. Hiring a decorator--why? Your home should be comfortable and of use to the people living there, not some kind of art project that is to impress people who don't live there.
