Suffolk man David's passion for music and buying records has spiralled into a compulsion to hoard anything that takes his fancy. A regular on the car-boot circuit, he has filled every inch of living space in his bungalow - but psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses is on hand to help. Elsewhere, professional de-clutterers Allyson Pritchard and Zoe Steel meet Paul from Essex, the proud owner of Britain's largest milk bottle hoard - a collection that stands at 30,000 and counting.

When we cleaned out his Grandmother's house and had the clutter cleared and trash chucked out, I asked him if he liked being able to walk from room to room freely. He said," Yeah, it's nice.". His language is very telling, David. He feels safe, cocooned, comforted. He sleeps like he is in a tomb. I think Stelio hit the nail on the head. It’s like he is entombing himself to be closer to his mother. He is comforted by isolation and these illusions towards the grave. He loses relations in favor of the hoard. Like a son breaks it off if his mother doesn’t like you. It’s very interesting.

Keep it Simple. Example: I have 5 book shelves. The only books I keep are ones that fit into these shelves. I only keep books by my favorite authors. I limit the number of authors I collect to 3. The other books are one-offs. I keep open areas for bookends and collectibles or knick knacks. If I buy a new book I must have space for that book on the shelf or I have to get rid of a book in order for the new book to remain. I donate my old books to the library or other organizations so that other people can enjoy them, too. I see it as a gift to others to donate my well loved and no longer needed book. If I have a need for sentiments I can take a picture of that item so I have it to look back on. I can also make notes aboit a book that I have read, why I liked it, what inspired me, etc. These things help me to love my things and not become a hoarder like my mom was. I love books. I love stuff. All kinds of stuff!! I could collect a million things but I choose not to so that I can enjoy what I currently have and just live day to day life without having too much to overwhelm me. I always seem to have things to donate and that's okay. New comes in and old stuff goes out. It's the way of life. And we have to accept that. Also, by not collecting all the things you can enjoy other people's homes and their collections. The internet is now a great resource for learning and reading everything!! Books on Kindle can keep you from creating a hoard or being bombarded by a hoard. You just have to make the decision to say I can let go. I can let go because I'm not going to be here forever and as my time is limited I should enjoy all that I have while I'm here. The rest of what I don't use can go to someone who can use it. I would like my items to remain in good condition until it is passed along to someone else. So I have to be able to keep my things and my spaces clean and maintained. I will not neglect my family, my responsibilities, my own life for the sake of my stuff. I can let go because I refuse to have so many things that overwhelm my family after I pass away. I can let go because when I look at my things they make me happy. I can let go because I want my family and friends to look at my things and it brings them happiness peace and fond memories. And if it does none of these things.... It has to leave. And I say good bye. 👋 I make sure the item leaves my home within 3 days. If you set a time limit you will find it helps you to stay on task and focused. And most importantly....If you need help ASK SOMEONE. 💜🙏💖

I love collecting things, Pokémon cards and books mostly, and while I have many many more of both than most people, I’d never let it get so bad that I couldn’t see and interact with every inch of my collection, looking at them is the best part, pointless if I can’t see them or walk around in my space

They showed the whole house when they first showed his hoarding. He must have cleared only the living room.

My rule for decluttering is "if i didn't use this item in the past month or more probably i won't need it anytime soon" i tend to keep glass jars for flour, sugat, etc but sometimes they pile up. Having recycling centers around really helps knowing they can be reused.
