A Shopaholic Who Can't Let Go of Old Things | Hoarders Get Your House In Order | Only Human

26-year-old Amie Ormand is a self-confessed shopaholic whose compulsive consuming is not only taking over her home, but is threatening her relationship with her fiancé Ali. Amie just can't stop spending and buys something new every day - whether it's online or on the high street - spending up to £200 a week. And while over half of the 2,000,000 tonnes of new clothes that the UK buys annually gets thrown away, Amie never lets anything go. Now she and fiancé Ali are literally drowning in heaps of clothes - her hoard takes over most of the upstairs rooms, including Ali's office - and they desperately need to clear their house.
Amie's hoard includes; 106 dresses, 142 handbags, 50 pairs of jeans, 140 pairs of shoes, 7 digital cameras and a rowing machine. And when they are all laid out in a warehouse for Amie to see, it's a tough dose of reality. The huge piles are easy pickings for antiques and artefacts dealer Nick Allen who uses all of his selling know-how to shift Amie's collection, including setting up a pop-up shop so Amie can sell her clothes back to the people of Exeter. But with interiors expert Abigail Ahern needing over £2000 for the redesign of the house, Nick is under pressure to dish out some tough love to help Amie succeed in parting with her fashion hoard and make some much-needed cash. Will Amie finally let her emotional attachments to her clothing go and raise the money needed to transform her house into a home fit for newly-weds?

I agree. I don't think the designer took into account that their home is a character property. Low ceilings with beams & small windows with minimal light. Lighter paint colors would've opened up the space with the appearance of bigger & brighter. Bedroom was very bland with no pop of color at all.

She should make it light airy young and clean looking.. Does she even have a design qualification?.. Horrific..I would go nuts! That is the worst interior design I have ever seen.. I am that cross with the interior decorator. She did not consult Amie about the colour choices at all. It was all about her vision and not about helping Amie transition into her new space. PS she should have been given more than just one rail to fill. I am not a clothes hoarder but I would need two to three rails (taking into account a coat, jacket and knitwear, let alone dresses, skirts, t-shirts, pants, bags and shoes.

Absolutely horrendous impractical design. they made her take out the things she loves, such as clothes and shoes and then brought in installation of shoes that will be nothing but dust collectors so instead of her having things she loves the designer brought in the things she herself loves. They took out the painting they already had, made them sell it for nothing, and instead brought in the painting that cost them 80. Dark color that made rooms look even smaller and ginormous fires around that did not add anything but cost money.

You’re quite underestimating the human mind. As long as she’s willing to take part in the process, as long as she focuses on what she’s gaining (not what she’s “losing”) she’ll be just fine. These are just bad habits and bad habits of thought. People make it so complicated. Therapists doubly so, as it’s their bread and butter. 95.8% of the time they’re completely unnecessary. How many people do you know “in therapy” -have been for years- the only thing that’s changed is the counselor’s bank account.

People who love clothes … our wardrobes mean so much to us. What we choose wear is a big part of our personal expression. I felt terrible for Amie as she had to pare down her collection by 90%. Then that so-called designer went and painted their formerly bright cheery house into “makes me want to slit my wrists dark gray, sort of blueish gray and allegedly lilac gray”. And then she painted over some of Amie’s former shoes apparently, as an “art installation”/torturing reminder of all her pretty things that she was pressured into selling cheap to PAY that obnoxious lady to ruin their house!? Through it all this sweet girl was so brave and tried to roll with it. Betcha front room was have been repainted before the show even aired! Another commenter said that they had celebrated their 10th anniversary and have three children, so I hope the experience of participating in this show is just a distant memory to them now.

12 years ago I noticed I had a bit of a hoard happening in my home. Coming across things that I didn’t even remember buying. So I stripped it all back and gave myself one rule to live by....if I hadn’t used it within 12 months it gets donated. And that’s what led me to realise my reckless and impulsive consumerism was a symptom of something far deeper and disturbing than I could’ve guessed had I not given myself that *one* little rule to live by.... Life is lighter and happier when we’re not weighed down by ‘things’. 🙂

As a tall person, I would feel very claustrophobic in that house with the low ceilings and doorways. And the redesigned home is a disappointment. I doubt if the young woman is able to stop her hoarding of expensive fashions. I don’t have high hopes for the marriage.

Who is the designer ? My neighbours hide away that she did up in her families crawl space resembles the hoarders new lounge / livingroom. She was 14, it was dark with house hold throw backs not unlike the redo. Should have saved there new found cash and did it themselves. Even the refurbished fireplace looks unfinished, looks like primer. Did not know that flat white is the in thing. LOL. She may have temporarily given up excessive shopping, given the redo she may start drinking.

That is exactly how,I felt. her bf was more concerned about what he wanted and no one really consulted Amy. She was happyselling,but I wish,she had been able to have kept her own money or at least designed her home the way she wanted. Her BF didnt out any of his money into anything. i dont think they will get married,or stay together if they do.

I think sometimes the designers just want to experiment and do designs they like. They don't care if it fits the home or customer's style. Painting tiny rooms so dark, including the ceiling..? 😳

I personally would have done white through the place with art and comfort pieces with pops of color that amy is attracted to. Put the money into therapy individual and couples therapy. A photo of the pile is a better reminder. I hope they are well a decade later

I hope her fiance realises what he will work for, the rest of his life, if he stays with this woman. The 'designer' comes across as a bully, who pushes her bad taste onto her clients. I feel that she stuffs up the whole show.

I identify with Aimmie, I've realised I've developed a clothes hoarding problem since a mental health breakdown in late 2020 ,I'm walking sideways in one room because of the clothes in there ,some unworn with the labels on 😞

I feel like the office could’ve used more paint layers. The shoes that were painting could’ve used more paint. The fire place mantle in the bedroom could also use more paint. I know they had limited time and money but still XD
