Brown sauce is a traditional condiment served with food in the United Kingdom and Ireland, normally dark brown in colour. The ingredients include a varying combination of tomatoes, molasses, dates, apples, tamarind, spices, vinegar, and sometimes raisins or anchovies. The taste is either tart or sweet with a peppery taste similar to that of Worcestershire sauce. It is similar to brown sauce marketed as steak sauce in the United States.

I know a guy that loved putting a sauce like this on his food when he was a kid until his mom noticed he was eating way too much and even caught him drinking it from the bottle once. She threw out all the sauce and banned it in the house. I always blame the parents in these shows. You don't allow kids to abuse foods like this, you take it away and make them eat better things. They'll eat other things unless you give in to them. When you give in, the addiction forms and it becomes a real issue.
@Sarah.Riedel6 жыл бұрын
The thing is, research has shown that the authoritarian approach to a kid's eating habits during childhood actually tends to exacerbate these unhealthy, pathological OCD-like patterns in adulthood. Rather than solving the problem or "nipping it in the bud," it teaches children that food is the enemy and that mealtimes are a source of intense fear and anxiety, rather than a pleasurable social event to be enjoyed. Children should never be force-fed or scolded or berated for their food-related peculiarities - this just emphasizes the notion that they are not in control of their own eating habits and this out-of-control feeling, down the line, ultimately leads to this crippling, paralyzing anxiety we see here. Instead of issuing these all-or-nothings (forcing a child to eat a particular item or forbidding them to eat a particular item, provided they aren't literally allergic to it), parents should offer kids a wider range of different options and allow them to pick and choose. If they can't eat a meal without sauce, let them eat the sauce as long as they also try at least one other item. When they're presented with choices rather than ultimatums, kids develop healthy self-directed eating habits.
@lone67186 жыл бұрын
Sarah Riedel I think she is saying that allowing the food items to be in the home, cooking the food, or just over all giving in to the pickiness is the problem. Bullying a kid or anyone else into eating what you want the too doesn’t work, but turning a blind eye and just allowing it is just as bad.
@charlieraven63425 жыл бұрын
@@lone6718 nah she was talking about banning food entirely for a child obbessed with food. if she didn't mean to say that then she wouldn't have said " You don't allow kids to abuse foods like this, you take it away and make them eat better things. They'll eat other things unless you give in to them. When you give in, the addiction forms and it becomes a real issue." don't defend op lol. research shows that allowing your kid options for food helps in pickiness and many times pickiness happens from sensory issues that parents will ignore. communicate with your kids, let them choose, adn choose options they enjoy. if a parent needs to feel like they wan't to control some aspect of the kids like, teach them about portion control and reinforce that (properly, don't think a growing child can survive on a 1500 cal diet, they need a lot more if they are active.) also can i say if your child is drinking brown sauce out of the bottle there is a different problem then the kid being addicted to brown sauce lol, its probably an issue with food control (which will only reinforce the OCD like behavior in kids when banning a food they become obsessed by), or it could have been caused by the family not having well cooked food in the house (or extremely "healthy" food which caused the childs body to crave something in the sauce) or starving by portions being to controlled or no money for food in the house so a cheap sauce is soemthing to cherish
@lellyt23725 жыл бұрын
It's a difficult balance to get to and to be honest, there was much more going on here than just picky eating or even an obsession with one type of food. There was issues with his dad, possibly his mum compensating for this strained/broken relationship. Trying to protect her child and make him happy. The fact it was the 80's (don't underestimate the very very different approach to parenting back then, trust me, it was very different) and both parents working and a lack of education around food in general. Just denying him brown sauce would not have solved his issues, it probably would have manifested in a different but equally destructive way. We cannot go back in time and see what happened day-to-day but I do think his mother had loving intentions and did her best
