The US and UK versions are so different. The UK version is much more analytical- for example, let's walk through some historic gardens as a metaphor on your life. The US version is like- here are ten tons of beans dumped in front of you- now walk through them with bare feet. lol. Also, the UK version of a show spans four weeks, where the US version spans four DAYS. Again, showing the huge differences in our culture. You can't undo a lifetime of bad eating in four days, although the US participants do a good job of it. I enjoy the UK version a lot more, because it's more thoughtfully put together.

The fact that his parents never even taught him how to use silverware properly is horrifying. Even that creates such a barrier to entry for trying new things, if he's intimidated by something as basic as a fork. He was a good sport, especially considering how much he had to deal with outside of the food itself

The UK version is better than the US version imo. The psychologist isn't just off the cuff, and they're not trying to get in and get out within like 4 days or a week, regardless of if they've helped the person or not. The psychologist really went deep and asked good and insightful questions, rather than just screaming DENIAL or whatever. They waste just as much food though, it makes me ashamed as a human...
@ivanhozjan7137
@ivanhozjan7137 6 жыл бұрын
Also, I somehow get the sense that UK version is more likely to be genuine. As you've already mentioned, 4 weeks vs. 4 days after which these people are supposed to eat a proper meal at a celebration, but also the way that American freaky eaters are surprised by the encounter with JJ and Mike after being exposed to 2 cameras and a microphone for at least a minute without taking a notice, part of the cast never changing the clothes in some episodes...

The want him to start changing his habits and start with a cucumber? That's so dumb! The point at the beginning is to give him variety. They could start with pasta or soup and put small pieces of vegetables in it. Once he loses the fear he could eat just the vegetables if he wants! They could even put vegetables with beans cooked togheter.

I appreciate what this show is doing, but seeing them waste all of that food just to show someone how much they eat in a year is driving me crazy. Can't they just use diagrams and donate all that to a food pantry/charity? Even if it might be on the unhealthy side, some food is better than no food for people who go without.

I have watched over a dozen of these programmes now and I always think of an Australian doctor who once said that.."no toddler with purposely starve themselves". If parents provide a child with food they like and NOTHING ELSE you set them up for life with problematic eating disorders, as is evident in many of the episodes. Parents take note. YOU are the ones who buy, prepare and present food to toddlers and children, so the outcomes are YOUR FAULT.

Maybe it's not fair, but I keep wondering how parents give in and let there kids this way. I was a picky eater and had to sit at the table until I had at least 5 bites of everything on the plate. Sometimes I was at the table for hours. Tough love? Well I have a varied diet and try new things all the time. Different generations maybe. My parents thought wasting food was a crime and my grandparents told stories of the Depression and having NO food. I hate wasting food to this day and HATE having to throw something away.

Mine had gotten so bad that I was getting neuropathy in extremities, which led me to the doctor. No permit damage was done, but it's possible. I'm glad Tom decided to improve his diet. I had a friend as a kid who had a similar issue with eating in front of people. The types of foods they ate were varied and normal, but the couldn't stand eating with others. Hated restaurants, had to eat at their desk in their room rather than at the table with their family, couldn't even have a snack with other kids. Anything but solitude during a meal resulted in a panic attack.

I loved this episode! Tom did so well and really faced everything head on. He was very open to the experience and that speaks to the success he’s had. I got emotional at the end when his family said they were proud of him and he hadn’t heard that from his dad as much before that. The only thing I can’t believe is the foods they first had him try! Give him something good….like an apple or orange. To make him more confident. Starting people off with veggies like broccoli is a good way to put them off trying other foods. Glad it didn’t stop him though!

I haven’t made it very in this episode… but my gut is from the beginning… he’s the first born … the mom is the issue. Mommy’s boy and she didn’t make the same mistake with the next two. Reminds me of when I met my husbands boys. The oldest would only eat Mac n cheese, hotdogs, and ice cream for his first 10 years… the other 3 no issues. Then he met me and I wouldn’t put up with it. He’s 18 and eats practically everything. His mom ask me how I did it. 😂

The same thing happened to me when I was on a diet of just vegetables and meat. Nothing else. I tried to eat other foods and I would want to vomit but I just forced myself to eat foods my body didn’t wanna eat and now I’m over it. It’s not as easy as it seems.

Jason Boado it's not common in Australia but I am aware of sugar companies in America using charcoal from animal bones during the purification process of sugar. Which would mean the sugar is no longer vegetarian/vegan. So that might be what they're referring to. I'm unsure of practices in the UK.

If my parents had done that with me, I would literally have starved to death. My parents struggled to get me to eat anything at all, even things I liked, because I had (and still have) such severe sensory problems with food thanks to my autism. I've been underweight my entire life; my BMI is currently 19, and a healthy BMI is between 20 and 25. 19 is actually high for me; my average is 17-18.

They could start him out with baked potatoes and haricot beans, spaghetti with tomato pasta sauce. And then mix in some cooked vegetables with the pasta sauce, like capsicum, zuchinni and extra tomato. And some vegetables to top the baked potato. Like sweetcorn, capsicum, grated carrot, chopped beetroot and green peas.
