Awesome video! Brought back memories when we spent the night at the Miyajima Grand hotel back in 2017. My favorite moment was drinking tea at one of the shops on the main streets. All the way in the back of the shop was a beautiful koi pond where you could sit and relax. I hope to visit there soon!

For anyone going there in the afternoon I advice you to eat everything you want first and then go on looking around the tori gate and shrine. I remember when I went there I went looking around first and when I got back all the food stalls were closed 😅

@@onlyinjapanGO Yup learned that the hard way 🤣 Hoping I can visit Japan again this year and this time spend almost all day there, last time I went they were doing some work on the tori gate so it was covered but the place was still great!

I love watching baby Leo interact with the world. It reminds me of when I had babies. Challenging but fun. You see everything with fresh eyes. Have to add that I'm probably a nerd/geek because I would totally be rocking those deer hats.

John, your are blessed with a beautiful family! In 2012 I hosted our local judo club from Hongwanji in Kona Hawaii of 18 visitors. We visited Miyajima and went to the top of the mountain, came back down and feasted on oysters!

John, thank you so much for this video. This is the location that made me want to visit Japan, and was the absolute must do when I was planning my first visit. Unfortunately, it got waylaid by Covid, and timing is no longer on my side to go any time soon. This is so beautiful, and exactly what I wanted to experience in person.

I was there 1 month ago. Had a good wandering session there. Dropped by the zoo there among a few areas. I like the Miyajima beer can, the green one with deer on it.

If the hotel/ryokan pricing in the island is a bit prohibitive, another option is to just get one at Miyamaguchi (by the port on the Hiroshima side). Just take the late ferry out of Miyajima after appreciating the night scenery. Check ahead to confirm the schedule, of course, as it might change depending on water/wind conditions. While in Miyajima/Miyamaguchi, try out the unagi as its their specialty.

I went Miyajima in June 2019. I recommend staying the night. We stayed at a Ryokan with onsen. The seafood dinner was delicious. We took our time exploring the island by bicycle. The Ryokan provide free shuttle to the hotel and ferry terminal. Thank you for sharing. I have fond memories of my trip there. Nice to see Kanae and Leo. Leo is a mini you, John!

in my hotel there, 16 years ago, I got served my mean by them on their knees, crawling into the room. so weird.. but true, it was wonderful after all the tourists left. I advice to go climb the mountain on the island, or take the cable car up and then walk down. it was beautiful.

Dude I can’t say it enough - the 1080p/60fps video quality of these streams makes SO MUCH DIFFERENCE! YUUUGE. Whatever A/V idiosyncrasies Prizm (sp?) has are imperceivable. Please read “imperceivable” in Wallace Shawn’s voice from Princess Bride.

I was in Miyajima over 15 years ago with my Aikido dojo in the fall. We stayed in a inn up in the hill. I will never forgot the wonderful meal I ate that night at the hotel.we walked around at night with our yukata and there were lots of drinking folks lol.there were hardly any foreigners visitor though. We went up to the peak , greeted a bunch of deers, but we didn’t get to walk around the shopping area though.

Was there last week. Awesome place. We did the deep fried manju from the store opposite the one you went to. Totally delish! We also walked up Mt Misen via the Daishoin route the hard way (climbing up over 2000 steep stone steps (175 flights of stairs!). Also conquered my fear of the Miyajima cable car (13 years after last going on it and freaking out).

I've also stayed at the camping area, tucked around the coast, with the deer wandering around and sharing my spot. I was cycle camping, so the trip to and from the main area was pretty quick. I had very little language, but took my chances on turning up, asking (with the help of Google Translate) and seeing what was available. Loved having the place go quiet, outside of ferry hours, and will definitely do that again (although your hotel looks tempting)

My memories from Miyajima, 2019: - Had coffee ice cream - Had deer trying to steal my food - Had the best nikuman - Had an urge to buy all the cute deer souvenirs - Seen a wedding ceremony - Discovered the beautiful Daisho-In temple. I don't think many people get to see it, but it is very, very worth it! Such a magical place, would definitely go again! 😍

Hi John. I’d planned to stay there last week on a quick vacation around western Japan after a business trip to Tokyo. But tested positive on my second day and had to isolate in a hotel in Tokyo for my entire visit. So sad - but I have great memories of spending a couple of nights on the island when I visited with my daughter.

at that age of leo, parents should have mastered the art of misdirection. kids have a very short attention span parents who are good at misdirecting the kids attention to another thing would not have problems on where they should go ^_^ kinda hard at start but you will get the trick sooner or later... i have a niece age 24 months who is much much spoiled than leo and i can get her to stop the tantrums sometimes by misdirecting...

Fay, he’s just a baby and before noon is his nap time. He went to sleep just after this - the timing is off but don’t expect to see him often anymore except in edited videos. We wanted to do this trip and bring you with us - and learn from it. Leo’s at an age where he is learning fast and now feel it’s time to shut out the audience from this part of our life until he grows up. You won’t see him live much more, but sometimes in edited content on the other channel. This kind of comment is exactly why. People are judgmental on every single thing. I can take it. I don’t think my family should. Thanks for the feedback :)

Having visited all three of Japan's most scenic spots (日本三景), I will risk mega down votes and rank both Matsushima Bay (Sendai) and Amanohashidate (Kyoto) above Miyajima. The later two are more remote, thus are not overrun with tourists, at least in my experience.
@EVL-xj5vc
@EVL-xj5vc Жыл бұрын
You mean you prefer the former two because they are less crowded with tourists? I’ve been to Sendai Matsushima Bay and thought it’s overrated. You are saying Miyajima is below it 😅

why are so many people wearing masks? Is it still required?
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO Жыл бұрын
It was never required. This was 2-3 months ago. Masks 😷 are no longer needed after 3/13 except on public transportation at crowded times and certain events people Japanese have always worn masks 1) when they’re sick 2) for the awful pollen and hay fever in the spring 3) to prevent sickness but this is not very effective if you’re next to a person who’s sick. Japan is a country of politeness, something you will Enjoy when you come. It’s safe and people think about others around them. This is a product of that. There was never a mandate here.
