I once did a working holiday and spent it working in forestry out in Okutama. They wanted me to stay at the end of the year but the government would not let me change to a working visa, they said I needed 10 years professional experience in my own country working in forestry or farming to switch to an agriculture visa. It was very disappointing. I did have the best year of my life, travelled all over Japan and even met my now wife! It is a great experience that anyone wanting a taste of Japan should try.

Do you have any info or starting place to look at for someone else possibly interested in doing that on a WH visa?

I went on a working holiday visa back when I was 30 as well, but in Australia. Best experience of my life, highly recommend anyone who can do it to do it, whether it's in Japan, Australia or anywhere. I was too old, it's best to do it like Alex, right after you finish studying.

Hearing Alex discuss his experience of living in Japan using the Holiday/Work visa makes me wish I was young enough to qualify. I would love to do something like this.

Since driving was mentioned, and that John had to take a driving test since he's from Ohio, I googled "sample driving test questions Japan" and took a sample test (random questions). I was at question 19 before I got one wrong. If you're used to European driving signage, you should be ok. Most countries do use a red octagon and lettering indicating a 'stop' in the local language. Japan uses a red triangle instead with 'stop' in the local language.

The experienced John can ask so many questions; whether he stays in Tokyo longer than his work visa. There is really a lot of experience to be gained from John, who lived there for a long time. There are still questions about the constant learning of another language.

I'm heading there in the next few years for a job. Hopefully, they will accept as I'm in my fifties. My current profession is in finance, but I'm not applying for finance. I prefer working in hospitalities or retail so I can learn Japanese😮

I hope so too! Working here is an experience, the good and the bad and the cultural differences, Japan sure needs help with the influx of tourism!

but isn´t that a bit unfair? i mean why should I, as a normal working/living citizen be restricted if my government doesn´t apply for these programs? in my opinion every person should have the right to decide what to do on his own (refering to these kind of things)

I am from the US. My mother is Maltese, I am working on getting dual citizenship, I was hoping i could do the work travel visa there. Malta is in the EU but doesnt seem to be included in the work travel visa program for Japan.

I think the work/holiday visas are called J8 visas. I got mine by writing the Australian embassy in Ottawa. No one told me about these visas, but somehow I'd heard I could get a working visa to Australia. I found out later I could get one to Ireland and other members of the British Commonwealth. If anyone is interested in going anywhere, they should start by writing the embassy of their desired destination. If I could have gotten a visa to Germany, I would have gone there too.
