According to "Three Months with second lieutenant Onoda: Illusionary Hero" (amazon kindle), an insider's book written by Tsuda Shin, the ghostwriter of Onoda's autobiography, Onoda and his men attacked about 100 local islanders in the 30 years after the war, killing about 30 of them. And it was not in self-defense, but in ambush. For 30 years after the war, they continued the looting and killing of the locals that the Japanese imperial military had done during the war. President Marcos at the time treated it as an amnesty, but the people who had their immediate family members killed there were never satisfied. It is unacceptable to ignore these facts and glorify them.

These comments! Such lies written by some ghostwriter are spread by a secondary ghostwriter just like you! The real history denies what ghostwriters wrote. The government of the Philippines didn't terminate them but tried to save them in collaboration with the government of Japan and their families. Sometimes Onoda & his men fall on the local anti-communist guerilla fighting the local communist guerilla, and in cognito, fought them. Anyway, Japan gave a chance to the Philippines to be an independent country.

The thing is, Onoda thought he was still at war, he didn't know the war ended, and on many occasions he would clash with local police and Filipino military too, so he probably thought they were enemy soldiers... I think when he finally found out that the war ended and he killed those people for nothing he probably regretted it for the rest of his life... I read that he couldn't find peace and struggled to settle in Japan after he moved back there

Correct. Guerrilla is also called "assymetric warfare". Threating and killing civillians is a war crime, true, but try to enter his mind. He was in a foreign island, with everybody else being an enemy. He was alone (or with just a few man). They must survive. They have to fight for their country / their belief. I don't consider him a real hero, but I understand what he have done, as a soldier with a mission. Nobody can say something about his commitment. He was just that: a committed soldier.

well, I learned that the Japanese troops' nickname for Filipinos was 'Donkos"...wonder where that came from... the movie was well-above what I was expecting, in acting writing direction, strange that it is Belgian-owned of all countries to make a movie about Pacific War...I was a little let-down that there was no post-script at end on Onoda's life after returning to Japan, (I know he died in 2014 at 91yo)..and no attempt to portray his initial return to Japan, people's reaction to him, and his reaction to modern Japan..as well as his learning of Japan's fate in WW2 the A-bomb etc..but otoh I do get why movie leaves off where it does with him in first leg of return route to Japan in back of Filipino military helo...but he did write a memoir, maybe you need to read that to take up where movie left-off..

Did you watch the trailer? This does not seem like a positive portrayal. It seems like hell, fighting for 30 years, this dude is a psycho. They make movies about killers and bad people literally all the time. Hitler, Genghis Khan, serial killers, assassins, terrorists, AMERICAN soldiers. Why shouldn't they make a movie about a Japanese soldier?

Show us a movie about the massacres the Japanese commit! Show us a movie about the killings of civilians, the killings of women and children! Show us a movie of the brave guerrillas across Asia who refused to be slaves! Show us a movie in honor of the 30 million dead in China! Show us a movie about true bravery and courage in resistance to an evil empire of murder and slavery, and then it will be worth watching! I hope that this movie will paint history accurately, and not gloss over the many atrocities of the war!

You NEVER pay real attention to japanese movies because you are extremely prejudiced about the Japanese people being an "entire evil race" because of the army's actions. You know what problem I have is you keep ask Japanese civilians to ask to feel guilty or write diaries for a movie of a place they never seen or experienced for something they are not involved in. We don't catch Chinese and Koreans living in japan to be exterminated in japan. Why should we? It's not like Germany where civilians were taught to catch jews inside germany. Does that happen during Nanking? Nanking is not in japan or in the Philippines. The holocaust happened inside germany. German Civilians seen people being deported. Now they realized how terrible they have misguided in direct involvements because of their goverment. Because many Japanese soldiers feel way more remorse than the civilians. Some Japanese movies did expose these regrets of soldiers what they have done what is considered cruel and barbaric. You never pay attention to these movies because you are extremely prejudiced about the Japanese people being an "entire evil race" because of the army's actions. But You can't ask Japan to make everyday movies their people can't witness about you. You don't realize Germans can't make everyday movies about their invasions in each countries?

@@TheHollandHS What are you even saying? The Japanese genocides across Asia are very comparable to the Holocaust! Your government refuses to recognize this, too willing to admit their crimes. A country in which a politician even recognizing the nation’s sins is shunned is a very disgraceful country indeed. And as to these Japanese movies in which history is accurately portrayed, please do point me towards them. I have nothing against the Japanese people, my problem is with their government that continues to deny any wrongdoing. I would love to watch a movie in which history is accurately portrayed, rather than censored and shunned.
