Thank you for watching my videos! I truly appreciate it!
This tutorial will show you how to create approximately 12" blocks using 4 or 5 fabric squares and adding a "grout" (1" fabric strips). The size of the blocks may change depending on how you decide to cut your fabrics.
My book, "Fractured Glass" is available on my website www.QuiltingWithNancy.com. The book has two techniques. The technique in this video and a unique foundation pieced block for making smaller 6" blocks.
If you are interested in learning how to paint your own fabrics like the ones that I used in this video, please click on the link:

I know you talked about not going too small on your block size, but could I use a layer cake for this project or is 10” too small as the starting size? Would you cut it three or four times at that size? I love this quilt idea and have the perfect layer cake for this, but I don’t want to be disappointed like you mentioned at the beginning of the video. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes you can - 10" is as small as I would go though. You can do 3 or 4 cuts and your blocks will probably only measure about 8 1/2" when you are done as the edges for some reason when you use smaller pieces end up a bit more wonky, but you can square them up :) - let me know how it goes! Nancy

Thank you for asking this question. As this block was being made, I kept seeing it in one of my layer cakes.

@@QuiltingWithNancy I have been working with my 10” blocks and being careful with adding my 1” strips and the block hardly shrink at all. I’m using a scant 1/4 “seam and pressing well. My blocks are finishing at just a hair under 10”. Donna Jorden at Jorden fabrics has a similar method and she marks her pieces with a small line to keep everything straight when sewing the pieces together. The combination of your cutting method and her piecing method works like a charm, you should give it a look. I have decided to cut the blocks four times, so end up with 5 pieces to sew back together. It’s coming along very nicely. Thought you might like to know.
