Ontario Highway 11 - Barrie to North Bay - October, 2021

Drivelapse video of Highway 11 starting from the 400 at the Duckworth Street interchange in Barrie and progressing northerly through the Crown Hill Interchange where Highway 11 splits from the northbound 400. The video follows the RIRO expressway through Orillia to Gravenhurst, where Highway 11 turns abruptly to the east crosses over the Gull Lake Narrows and then continues northerly through Bracebridge and Huntsville before leaving the District Municipality of Muskoka for the District of Parry Sound. In Parry Sound District, Highway 11 passes around Burk's Falls, Sundridge, South River, and Powassan before entering the District of Nipissing and entering the City of North Bay.

Great video. We've made numerous drives back and forth from Niagara to North Bay, as former residents until 2010. 5 and 1/2 hour drive including stops. Between those road trips and prior ones, there has been lots of changes and closures of retail stores and restaurants, and of course new ones opening up.

Highway 11 from Barrie to NB is the most intresting segment. Its like the highway cannot decide between being a full 400 series highway or a country RIRO highway. It has moments where it can be mistaken for a full fledge highway and then boom it looks like a run down country side road with a median lol

It certainly does vary considerably doesn't it? While the RIRO section is undeniably the most substandard section of the highway, it's also probably the most interesting to drive. Thanks for the comment.

Nice video as always AP, this province really is gorgeous in autumn. I wonder when the province will complete the work to fully modernize Highway 11 and redesignate it between Barrie and North Bay as Highway 411. After all Highway 11 changes directions after North Bay and the section between Barrie and North Bay is arguably busier than Highway 400 between Barrie and Parry Sound.

I'm not sure that Hwy 11 will ever be fully upgraded to a full fledged 400-series highway. As it stands right now, outside of very peak hours it operates relatively well, and there are so many corridors that need investment, it's hard to see Hwy 11 being prioritized. That's just my thoughts though, who knows.

Well if the Highway 11 ever becomes a fully fledged 400 series, I suspect it’d be called the Hwy 411

I forgot this highway had four lanes all the way to North Bay. But you can see why it isn't a 400-series highway. There are too many substandard elements to be considered a true freeway.

I doubt Hwy 11 will ever be fully upgraded to 400-series highway standards. There is too much work to do for a highway that, for the most part, functions well enough as it is. Thanks for the comment.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 The section between Barrie and Orillia could use significant upgrades. It's quite busy (AADT around 50,000) and it isn't getting any less busy. From Orillia to Gravenhurst, I think they can hold off for now (a 4-lane freeway would be more than sufficient and 6 lanes is not really necessary there, and the overall operations work reasonably well now), although work would be needed eventually.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 There is also houses and businesses along Highway 11 between Barrie and Gravenhurst (including Weber's Hamburgers) and I think the government would have a hard time getting people to sell their houses.

Its been sometimes that we didn't had some chill Rock vibes on this channel, that, I'm sure, many of us missed, although, I still prefer your videos with EDM. Also, videos of Ontario, excluding the Toronto aera are back after a year, a great series that is unfortunately, very underrated on this channel. Driving there, looks similar than driving on the Appalachians at the same period. With a lenght of 32:12, I wouldn't be that surprised that this'll be the longuest video of the channel, this year. The 2nd song, ''Linger'' looks pretty familiar to me. My dad has it to his phone & he plays it pretty oftenly during summer road trips. Also, reccorded during the week before Thanksgiving 2021 (In Canada). Also, i would like to see a video from Witchita somedays (The largest city of Kansas.)

Thank you for the comment. I probably will upload a video that is longer than this one later this year. A video from Wichita is probably pretty unlikely. I went to Kansas City last year, but I've never been that far west.

I went to the east coast in 2019 and 2020, it's scenic out there for sure, but it sort of lacks hustle and bustle in my opinion. I have uploaded almost none of the videos that I recorded from either of those trips. Thanks for the comment, and happy travels this summer.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 I try to upload everything I film. For me I just do it for fun and interest. By the way, I’m looking to start taking pictures. How do you take stills while you are on the road? What camera do you have for stills?

I use a Sony alpha 6600 with a 16-55mm f2.8 lens for my photos. It's almost certainly overkill for what I need it for, but it works well. I have used other cameras over the years, and generally prefer a smaller and lighter kit while on the road. I do this for fun too, I generally have the intent of uploading everything, but the truth is I drive around way much with my camera rolling to upload everything that I film. I'm also more susceptible to burnout these days. I have uploaded almost weekly every week since 2017 or so. That's a lot of road videos.

I feel you with the burnout, that’s why I have hardly uploaded since the fall. I have way to much going on in my life to get out and film. Keep up the good work!

Yonge Street never really was the longest street in the world. It's just one of those local pieces of lore that people say but isn't true. Kind of like how people in Houston claim that the Katy is the widest freeway in the world.

Almost got myself into a situation when I tried to get off the highway North of Orillia at night. I had never encountered a roll-on/roll-off or RIRO interchange before! Took the right turn a bit too fast and hit the median!

Interesting video. What does RIRO stand for? I haven't seen this type of highway setup with a continuous median barrier and local access anywhere in the States.

RIRO = right in, right out movements. That means: no left turns. It's a way to eliminate intersections. You can see some hair-raising merging at a few intersections farther down the road.

However, this stretch of the 11 between Barrie and North Bay, ON is obviously not a Trans-Canada, but the rest of the 11 is the Northern Ontario Route of the TCH.

Daily from Barrie to Gravenhurst you'll find some of the worst drivers seen. Slow left laners don't move over, on and offers with little to no merge lanes. After Gravenhurst feels like your are on the 400 extension, beautiful clear sailing.

Great drive! Did you know the G4218 Ya'an-Kargilik Expressway (auxiliary of G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway) in China is the longest spur in the world? Isn't the concept of the longest spur route pretty dubious? I mean, is a route that long really a spur and not just its own route? If Interstate 10 was considered a spur from I-95, it would be the longest spur in the world instead.
