Moving to Ottawa soon, looking forward to it. Although the series of highways around the GTA in a league of their own it’s nice to see Ottawa has at least one dedicated intercity full controlled access highway! Awesome video as always!

Thanks very much for the comment. Ottawa certainly doesn’t have the freeways of the GTA. But the 417 isn’t a terrible drive

I honestly would love to see another video from Ottawa someday on this channel, with the Hwy 417 & Hwy 174, since I’m curious to see how they look like. Did you see that bus at 12:50? It’s definitely something that you should try if you plan to go to Ottawa this summer. I also used it during my visit at Ottawa in the summer of last year.

Great ride! First time I've ever seen any type of rail transit down the median of a freeway was in Chicago. I'm excited to see what the system will look like once completed down 174.

Loved the drive! It's good that there are plans to extend the 417 as the 17 looked really quite busy. Awesome how rapidly the road widens beyond 9:28!

Thanks for the comment. Highway 17 is a fairly busy road. The widened highway is going to be a considerable improvment.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Highway 1 in easternmost Manitoba (from Falcon Beach to the MB/ON border) is a two-lane road, the only such section of the TCH-1 in the Prairie Provinces (I believe) that is only two-lanes. There is a very short segment of divided highway (about 1.5km) immediately west of the MB/ON border, where the weigh scales are in the median. So it is true that both ends of ON-17 occur where the highway divides. But the western end does not really mark the start of the divided TCH-1, since the highway remains a two-lane road for several kilometers past the weigh scales. The actual start of the divided highway occurs a little bit further west, west of Falcon Beach to be exact. As the crow flies, the start of the divided TCH-1 is about 16km west of the MB/ON border; from this point westward, TCH-1 remains a divided highway across the rest of the Prairies, except for some undivided four-lane segments within urban areas (St. Mary's Road and Broadway in Winnipeg, a brief section in Headingley, and the section of 16 Avenue NW in Calgary between Bowness and Sarcee Trail).

AP, Do you happen to have an opinion on MTO's seemingly new tactic of scraping off the white lines on the highway when changing to orange construction lines? If you've travelled the eastbound 401 through Scarborough (particularly the collector) over the last year, you'll have noticed how this scraping has created an awful drive along with broken asphalt right along those scraped lines. For me, it would be a fine solution if the construction wasn't being done over several years. Thanks for another great upload!
@AsphaltPlanet1
@AsphaltPlanet1 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I think drivers would get confused if the old white lines weren't removed prior to the application of the orange temporary lane markings. You're right though, the scarred pavement is both unsightly, and depending upon how the former lane markings were removed, can be quite rough to drive overtop of. I'd anticipate both the eastbound express lanes and collector lanes will be resurfaced following the completion of the construction through Scarborough.

That stretch of 17 reminds me of A50 between Lachute and Mirabel Airport, in terms of traffic and passing opportunity (more like the lack of, lol), well, and the plan for twinning. When did you go there?

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Doses that have to do with any future potential twinning of Highway 17?
@AsphaltPlanet1
@AsphaltPlanet1 2 жыл бұрын
The culvert extension was designed to be incorporated into the final configuration of the four-lane 417, but the culvert was replaced because of it's deteriorating condition, not for another reason. It would have been less expensive to replace the culvert in a couple of years from now when the new carriageway is constructed beside the highway then it was to replace it last summer.

Ontario Highways 17 and 417 follow the main line of the Trans-Canada Highway through the province of Ontario spanning 2 156 km. Today's 417 is a 192 km relatively freeway upgrade/replacement of Hwy 17 since 1971 with Hwy 17 preserving it's 1 964 km from the Manitoba border to near Arnprior, ON. However, kilometer markers of the 417 go in reverse for a change. The decomissioned route of Hwy 17 goes through Ottawa like today's 417, and runs parallels next to the Ottawa River until it touches the Quebec border as the entirety used to run for 2 180 km (last 216 km of it I mentioned were decomissioned).

What's your camera equipment that allows you to record 4K? My camera cuts off at 10 minutes when shooting 4K

This was filmed with a Sony AX-33 camcorder. A lot of cameras generate heat when filming 4K for long periods of time. You could always just record at 1080P and then upload it in 4K, the difference in quality is pretty negligible.

I haven’t seen any aircraft patrols in Ontario. Apparently they do go up every now and then in a Cessna or something, but I think it’s done more as a publicity stunt than anything else
