Ontario Highways - Stratford to Newmarket - Highway 7/8, 401, 407 ETR, and 400 - September, 2022

Drivelapse video of several Ontario highways starting with Highway 7/8 on the eastern side of Stratford and then heading easterly through Shakespeare and New Hamburg before entering Kitchener and following Highway 8 back to the 401.
The video then follows the 401 easterly passing through the then still unfinished construction to widen the 401 between Milton and Mississauga and then following the 407 ETR to Highway 427 and heading northerly to that highway's terminus.
From the 427 the video follows the recently widened section of Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan easterly to the 400 where the video follows that northerly to Highway 9.

Glad you didn't get stuck on the 401 past Guelph. That stretch between there and Milton is absolutely cursed with fender benders.

You should make a video about the completion on the 401 from 6 to 10/12 lanes from Milton to Mississauga

Nice to have another Toronto video here, the series where the channel started, mostly between 2011 & 2016. The full freeway secton of hwy 7/8 when it's still 90 km/h is very low, honestly. In my opinion, it should be at least 100 km/h. I also am very exited to see the 401 when widened east of Townline Rd. Hopefully, you'll make a video there when the work will be over, later this year. Right at the entrance of Hwy 407, the traffic was ridiculously low for a hwy having about 5 lanes/direction. I'm also looking forward of the construction of the upcoming Hwy 413 (Even known we'll possibily already be dead when it'll come out). Also, I heard that Jerry Springer, a very well-knownTV show hosts died yesterday at his home, he was 79 years old R.I.P. to him 😔 (Feb. 13 1944 - Apr. 27 2023)

I suspect that Hwy 7/8 will eventually see a speed limit increase as other expressways across the province also see a limit increase. I think more sections of road are going to be increased to 110km/h in the future.

Great video as always AP. The sun slowly setting throughout the video made for a rather pleasant drive. Also, I would personally like to see Highway 8 to be expanded between Highway 401 and 403 to a freeway and have it tie in with the Lincoln Alexander Parkway with it being redesignated as the 408 (although I know that this designation is supposed to be reserved for the Mid-Peninsula Highway) with Highway 8 being truncated to its section between Goderich and Stratford. Personally, it makes sense to have this be the project instead of the Mid-Peninsula Highway considering that most of it is already built and would largely require twinning between the 401 and 403. Although that being said environmental concerns may prevent this from being plausible.

There was at one time a plan for Hwy 8 to continue along the western and southern sides of Cambridge south of the 401. The right of way near Limerick Road was developed a few years ago, so such an extension seems unlikely today. I suspect Hwy 6 will eventually be upgraded to a free-flowing route between the 401 and the 403. Thanks for the comment!

Kitchener's highways are interesting. They seem much more urban than the freeways you find in the GTA, reminds me of Montréal or the states.

They certainly are unique in an Ontario context. One of the few cities that actually had a local expressway network constructed within it. Thanks for the comment.

Oh wow, all the traffic lights around New Hamburg are now fully protected for left turns. I still remember the days when left turns were only partially protected.

This video was in fact filmed 2 days before the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Also, in the latter part of the video, I'm glad you showed us the HOV lanes of the 400 again, but when the sun sets in that time.

Nice Video! On the ramp between Highway 427 and Major Mackenzie Drive, I was wondering why they didn't make it a free-flowing ramp so that the interchange can be more like a trumpet interchange. I guess it's because they are going to connect a new street to that intersection, and because traffic would have to move over many lanes to turn left on Barons Street. I also wonder if the 407/427 interchange will have to be modified in the future to accommodate increased traffic to and from Highway 427 north.

I think the ramp to Major Mack was designed as it was, because if and when the 427 is extended, the off-ramp to Major Mack will just be a standard off-ramp at a parclo. If you look, there is a third lane that is blocked off to the left of the two lanes that turn right, this will be the left turn lane in the event that the 427 is extended, and the direct ramp to Major Mackenzie West is removed. To my knowledge there aren't any plans to replace the loop ramps at the 427/407 interchange, but those loops are way too sharp for any kind of significant traffic volume, so maybe oneday. With the way they're widening the 401 these days, it'll have the longest express-collector system on the planet when it's all said and done, I think.

what would the only other candidate be? The New Jersey Turnpike is the only similar highway to the same scale as the 401 that I can think of off the top of my head.

Seeing the sheer number of lanes on the 410 these days, you'd think that the people in charge of it MIGHT want to drop prices to get more people to use it. Could possibly increase revenue, after all.

Great video! Lots of construction going on around the GTA. The cross-slope issues on the 427 are wild, talk about a big fail. I saw there were lawsuits between the government and the contractor. Did they eventually repave it or was it opened as initially constructed?

Sections of the 427 have been paved (and repaved) since the highway has been opened, in conjunction with selective diamond grinding. The extension drives pretty well, but the pavement looks like patchwork, which is a shame for such a new highway. Thanks for the comment.
