Practical comparison of the Ontario 6420 kukri machete and the Condor kukri machete....I was looking for a New England woodsman's kukri machete and had considered the Cold Steel black kukri as well....

Kukris are generally great choppers but they have many other performance aspects. I’ve had the Condor HD for many years. Use it for everything outdoors including delimbing branches at home. The only modification was wrapping the handle with bat tape.

Great comparison video! Not two that I would have expected to have been compared, but while watching this, I was really glad you'd thought to do so. And I very much appreciate your desire to avoid hacking on live trees. Thank you.

The distinct forward bend in the blade geometry has several advantages. It allows a more relaxed wrist position when holding the knife, with the wrist at a straighter angle when a blow is delivered, rather than bent forward, putting strain on the radius-wrist joint. Because of the wider area toward the point of the blade, more impact can be delivered, more weight pushes the center of percussion toward the point, and the sweeping belly makes for extremely effective slashing cuts.

For all these ignorant people arguing that he shouldn't be using a khukri for use in a forest, and that he should be using an axe; what you have to understand is that he is simply testing the chopping capabilities of these tools (for instance, what if one really needed to depend on these tools in the wild due to some unforeseen circumstances; which one would hold up better?) Of course, he could buy a real khukri, but some people would not want to go through the trouble of importing a genuine one, or have the money to afford one, etc. Moreover, I wouldn't want to use a real khukri in the woods. Too beautiful for that; I'd rather use one of these "cheaper" alternatives ^_^ I apologize for my long winded rant, but I try to help those "ignorantly inclined". If you're offended, then you're one of them! If not, then have a good day!

I agree, they should not be hatting. What the morons have yet to learn is that the Kukri is originally meant to do hard labor. Not just used for war, in fact it was originally a farm tool. It was used to cut down limbs, to make traps and shelters. It went from farm to war, but if you get one from a village, you will see that it is still used that way. So CHOPPING is a must from a Kukri.
@JuicyJerm6 жыл бұрын
Chuck Lee These people must not understand that some people want one tool to pack into the woods instead of having a pack axe or tomahawk, a large chopper knife, and a smaller Bush raft knife. Me personally, I usually only go out with either a tomahawk or large chopper and a smaller 4 to 5 inch blade. The Ontario Kukri and the SP5 are great do all knives of you only want to pack one.

Good review of the two blades. I have the Condor knife and 'machete version of Cold steel`s Kukri. The one with the thin blade and it bites really goos. The first thing I did with my Condor blade was to shape the handle to fit my hands better then I ground the edge a thinner scandivex then you have a new good Kukri knife. I have the same egg on Cold steel as well .. Enjoy your new knife`s

Another sweet video. Do you carry large blades every time you go out? I find myself rarely carrying even a fixed blade. I have a full sized kabar fighting knife which seems to be able to do most jobs but it doesn't seem worth the weight. Might be looking to get something a tad smaller that's fixed. At the moment I tend to go with my CRKT M16.

They do make a sheath for that Condor now. No idea why they didn't initially, but they do now. I picked it up, 20 or so bucks, a/b the same you pay for the kukri, but it's well done. I got mine from machete specialists. It is nice to have both of these depending on the terrain you're going to be in. The condor is easier on you just clearing light brush, where the weight of the ontario is overkill in light stuff. Great vid.

Khukuris, one 13" X almost a 1/2", and the other one is 10" X 7m/m, and I have a Cold Steel Kukuri Plus, the nice thing about it, it's made out of 0-1 tool steel, while the H.I.'s are 5160 Mercedes Leaf Spring's, you should check out some of the H.I.'s, or the Khukuri House Khukuris, some of them are not that expensive, and are excellent Khukuris, I luv my H.I.'s, great stuff.

I think they used to years ago, which is probably why you saw it at the army surplus store. They stopped making it though, and now all the Kukris they make are the San Mai III and SK-5 models of the Gurkha Kukri, the SK-5 Gurkha Kukri Plus, and the Kukri machete. Sorry, I'm a bit of a Cold Steel snob and I know their products inside and out haha. Been a fan of theirs for years. Ontario makes great stuff too by the way. Good buy on your part.

How has the Condor Kukri held up? Wondering is it ever broke at the Kaudi (the notch you mentioned some were stating was a point of failure) I have the big thick Cold Steel Kukri in SK5 steel. I paid about 160-ish on the Bay of E. Really impressive knife. I have been considering a small collection. My Dad gave me my first Kukri, which was one he brought back from WWII. He was in Merrill's Marauders, and they had Gurkha Soldiers and Kachin Guides with them. Man the stories. Anyway, he is solely responsible for my love of Knives having started me off with that Kukri, a U.S. Bayonet and Kachin knife. All stolen/gone now, but hope to replace and build up a lil collection in his honor that I can hand down to my son. One thing I've noticed about Ontario's big knives is that they are deceptively heavier than they feel in hand. The local blade seller carries them all and I've handled all of them. I guess the handle material is heaver than one might assume, making them very balanced, and very light and fast in hand.
@jimboethefirst74185 жыл бұрын
That was more than likely the Cold Steel Kukri machete of some type, because the actual Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri is 5/16 think and it a monster but cost more than both of those one put together, you got a good deal on both of those especially that Condor for $26 without the sheath.
@SteveB35711 жыл бұрын
The condor grind is generally wider out of the box, more of a scandy grind. I have several condors, and at the price, a little file work fixes that.

Two differences between the Ontario and the S&W, which may or may not be important to someone looking for a blade like this: the Ontario is made of 1095 carbon steel in the U.S. and the S&W is made of 440c or "400 series" (depending on which site you check) stainless steel--can't be sure because it's not in their 2012 catalog.

Good review. $26 Damn !!! That's a good price. Here in Canada the cheapest I saw it was $68. But it comes with a leather sheath. How has the Condor Kukri machete held up over the years ? Any rolling of the edge or blade or handle chips or cracks. Do you think it's worth the $68.00 ?

Nice video man. I adore Kukri's they're my favourite type of knife. I have two, but they're both very old, and too frail for hard use. I've been looking at getting the Ontario, so it was very cool to see it in action. I knew the Ontario would come out on top, it has a proper true kukri "dog leg" shape blade, which helps shift the weight forward on striking. I didn't much care for the Condor blade shape, it's a lil too much like a jungle parang, not really a true kukri. Again great video.
@jeromeonnen589412 жыл бұрын
I'm a die hard Cold Steel fan but I agree their small kukri is too light for north woods use. The Condor seems to have the same problem. For half to a third the price though, it didn't seem to do too badly. I carried an Ontario through most of my military career. I have nothing but good to say about those knives. Thanks for a great video and comparison.

Here's my two bits on these khukris -the condor is made in el salvador, has nice wood and they know machetes. -the ontario penetrates more because of the shallower grind on the blade, which has disadvantages, possibly folding the edge is one. -the ontario is made in china, hence the crappy plastic/rubber handle. -the condor has full tang construction which is always better!! -the condor has the notch on the underside which I believe was originally to prevent blood from running down the blade onto the users hands and/or to represent the trident of Shiva -I bought mine in Canada and it came with a beautiful leather sheath for 100 bucks to my door and I could not be happier. -I cut wood with a hatchet/axe/chainsaw -I keep mine in my bug-out kit thanx for the video it was well done!!

Ontario is actually made in the USA and also it is a full tang..so you're wrong

@TheMediatorOfChaos9 жыл бұрын
TasteThy Boot "the ontario is made in china, hence the crappy plastic/rubber handle." As others have pointed out, it's made in the USA. Also the "crappy plastic/rubber handle" offers superior grip over the Condor, hence the reason why most modern combat blades feature a similar design. There's nothing wrong with a wood handle, I prefer wood simply because I prefer the more traditional aesthetic of it, and I also prefer not to be "tacticool". The notch on the condor represents a cow's foot or shiva, to remind the user that a kukri is not to be used to kill a cow. and also prevents blood or sap from running down onto the handle. This issue is circumvented by the Ontario however, because of the larger finger guard. Regardless, I actually like the Condor Kukri more, but the Ontario is made of thicker blade stock and is made of 1095 Carbon steel, as opposed to our Condor which is made of 1075.

@crashdummy4012 жыл бұрын
you want to hit it more on the slanted part of the blade closer to your hand this is because the condor doesnt have as aggressive curve its the form your swinging it ALSO a scandinavian edge/ condor will dull faster but there generally easier to sharpen for instance if you have found a smooth rock in a survival situation and it was dull its much easier than a blade with a double bevel
@TheDrodder11 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you find out already, but the walmart blade is a "machette" version of kukri. From my limited knowledge, it's a thinner blade, quality of steel is poorer, lighter and slightly longer meant for just clearing bush but not good for chopping wood. Where as the gurkha versions of CS series is high-end steels and thicker. Correct me if I'm wrong though..

Thanks for sharing I would like to share something with you too,as a Nepalese you know what's the m shaped hole on the bottom of khukuri.for this we have to go back to history,then we had to fight with other countries to protect our land and we didn't had any modern weapons,and as a Hindu nation we gorkhali believe we have to give clean death even to our enemy, then this heavy weapon with m shaped was invented to cut the neck in one hit and had to repeat hundred times therefor plenty of blood had flown all over the handle and becomes slippery and hard to use these heavy weapon,these small cut one bottom let the blood drain and keep your hands clean all the time.sorry to say all the khukuri shown here in KZbin are basically used as household knife,the real once,our ancestors carried, were really big which are kept in some museums some royal families and some are even protected by locals from their ancestral times.thanks and sorry for any spelling and grammar errors

ill have to disagree and say that its the blade profile, with my own experiments ive found a full flat grind will stick and penetrate more just like the ontario and ive forgotten the other grind of the condor but to me it does bounce but i think the condor kukri was made for chopping sapplings while the ontario is a more all round sort of knife, anyway just my personal opinion :) if it makes sense hehe
@julesthurongi122311 жыл бұрын
TheDrodder: Yes, you are absolutely correct! CS has been making Kukris for a long time now, and its the machetes that this gentleman seems to be referencing. In my mind there isn't a tougher "modern" kukri design than Cold Steel's Gurkha Kukri, It is a great deal thicker than 1/4", and the Pres. of Cold Steel likens the chopping power to that of a large, razor-sharp two handed axe, and the cutting/slicing to that of a Katana. The CS kukri machetes are a completely different animal.
@lucasholst556810 жыл бұрын
I like the way you've done tests fairly but I think the design of the condor is ment to cut and bounce out to increase your momentum for your next swing, I may be no smart guy at this but I think that may be the cause PS I only got into kukri's tonight and im plaing to buy a very think and light weight large kukri for under $60.

which is heavier, which is sharper. finally which can you control. For me a sharp 15.5" medium nepalese kukri works best. I have CS, Kabar, and 8 nepalese kukri. My lease expensive 2nd quality nepalese kukri with a gradual full flat taper cuts great. Cuts saplings in a single blow.
