Drop the 413 and open up the 407 to the public, I.e. Free access.

It’s financially impossible. The 407 is worth over 30 Billion now. We sold it for 3.1. We could literally build a brand new highway right next to it for cheaper then buying it back. Thank the Conservatives for that winning idea
@johnnysecular
@johnnysecular 3 жыл бұрын
even if we made the 407 free what does that change? do you think it would get more drivers off of the 401 and other highways? but doesn’t it also invite traffic that currently uses arterials to avoid the toll? I think the 407 would fill up pretty quick if we made it free and then all of a sudden the benefit is reduced because it moves slower. I really don’t know if there’s a solution.

@@johnnysecular You already answered the question. Many avoid the highway due to the toll. It is significant even if you invest in the transponder which isn’t exactly cheap either and like you said the benefits would be short lived because frankly we need a long term plan But it would take many ppl off of the 401 and surrounding roads almost immediately so even at the current exorbitant cost I think it’s worth considering as a “shot in the arm” strategy to reduce traffic congestion
@johnnysecular
@johnnysecular 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDubDisciple but does it really make the 401 better? and what does congestion mean? like, for example if a trip take 10 minutes on the highway at 2AM, how long does it have to be at rush hour before you call it congestion? I think what happens often on the 401 is people travelling 70km/h feel like it’s too slow; but really it’s still faster than the surface street and no red lights. Because there’s a lot of money involved we need to agree on a definition for congestion; i feel like it has to be at least triple the time it takes at 2AM before we call it congestion.

They never should’ve sold the 407 that was the highway we needed. The proposed highway won’t help with most of the Golden Horseshoe need. It would mostly benefit future urban sprawl if anything.

the cheapest and best option is to not spend any money at all lol, if you make the road faster more ppl will use it and it becomes slow again lol. best solution is for everyone to adjust expectations and accept that driving at 4pm is slower than at 2am. Just put on some music and chill.

Building highways is not a solution. Look at LA, they built wider and wider highways and traffic followed it. People buy cars when you make communities unlivable without one.

Look up the concept "Induced Demand", this highway won't fix much. Studies actually show it should save about 30 seconds of commute time on average.
@johnnysecular
@johnnysecular 3 жыл бұрын
the people who need to drive the most are 1. professional drivers (eg cargo trucks, utility trucks etc...), 2. individuals who are travelling a long distance for work, 3. everyone else (eg running errands, dropping kids at school, etc...) Ok maybe you need to build more and more highways to accommodate more and more traffic. But what if fewer people in the #3 category needed to drive? What if it was faster and/or less of a fuss to walk to school? What if there was actually a grocery store and a dentist and a pub within walking distance of not just the home, but of each other? Of course the way Brampton and other suburbs got built this is not the case, and it will take a very long time to change it and make it more walkable so that fewer (3) are driving. But honestly it is also gonna take a very long time to build a new highway and it will then be too late because more subdivisions are built along the highway that are also not walkable and a lot of (3) are still driving.

@@kc-nv5yi You can actually build highways without induced demand. Look at major European cities which use motorways and other forms of transport like Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam etc. All have big freeways but also excellent public transports.
@DavidM-es9qq
@DavidM-es9qq 3 жыл бұрын
Building more highways doesn’t solve the problem, in the long term creating more highways only increases demand for automobiles. Google ‘Induced Demand automobiles’. What we need is to build higher density and mixed-use communities, not urban sprawl! Bring an urban planner to the show and they can help answer why this is such a bad idea.

The reality is ppl are abandoning the city. Look at the growth numbers for Caledon, Orangeville and Shelburne. Shelburne is the fastest growing city in Ontario and the majority of ppl leaving the city still commute back in for work Demographics are changing as prices continue to rise across the GTA more and more ppl are looking to the quiet communities north of the city to set down some roots

@@TheDubDisciple People love the idea of a single family home but the fact of the matter is that we can't truly support the cost of having neighborhoods so spread out, it's unsustainable. Big cities often subsidize their existence through our tax dollars. If people don't want to live in the city that is fine but these communities are going to have to be built at a higher density to support the inflow of people eventually. Either way creating car-oriented communities is not the way forward. Suburbia needs to pay the true cost of choosing cars over sustainable transportation or develop more sustainably.

@@DavidM-es9qq You can say that until you are blue in the face but nobody is going to pay more when they can pay less. When you can sell your million dollar closet and buy a gorgeous brand new modern home for less then half of that it’s a no brainer. @@TheDubDisciple Just because that's the way things are done doesn't mean it should continue to be that way especially when only a portion of the population benefits from it. Developing suburbs and automobile-oriented neighbourhoods is short-sighted and will only benefit us in the short-term at the expense of healthy communities and a strong and efficient economy. I'm not going to advocate for something that is going to put short-term profits over people.
@johnnysecular

@@TheDubDisciple the real issue is not what is the personal preference if people, the real issue is that the way things are it’s illegal to have a shop or a dentist within walking distance of new residential developments. If people prefer larger homes, fine, but why do we have to make it nearly impossible for them to go anywhere without driving? Look at the new developments in Brampton, they could’ve allowed shops on one of the side streets of each subdivision; but no, it’s just houses and only houses; and there is no market street in the neighbourhood. Even if you walk 10 minutes to the arterial, there’s nothing, it’s just a road. And even if you walk 25+ minutes to the plaza there’s still another 5 minutes just to cross the parking lot. This is not a matter of personal preference. Also living at the edge of town in a large town is not a matter of preference, ppl do it because it’s cheaper and frankly if there were smaller houses with smaller lots in Brampton ppl would die for them even more, cause they would be cheaper. Except that the way they subdivided the land, again, it’s illegal to build a townhouse or a smaller semi. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, you can sprawl and still create a somewhat self containing village at the edge of town instead of just a bedroom community. And it’s not too late, they can just change the zoning and allow shops with rental apartment on top, on just one street per subdivision and watch driving numbers plummet; this is not only cheaper than building a new highway but actually generates more revenue for the municipalities to maintain existing roads better.

i been living in Toronto for 14 years without a car. i have some honest questions to people who drive. where do you drive to? only to work? or do you also drive for everything else? do you consider 30 minute commute to be reasonable? or do is 30 too long? And finally is it usually the case that like, one or two days a week, the traffic is worse and it takes longer to get to work? Or is it always bad? I’m just trying to understand why ppl seem upset when talking about driving. What does it mean when you say the road is full?

But do you expect the drive to Barrie to take less than 45 minutes? From somebody who lives near those roads, I can say that this is much needed as far as a commute is concerned. The urban sprawl already exists there to be honest. I mean it, doesn’t seem logical if you don’t travel those roads but for those that’s do, it’s been due (if it happens). IMO
@johnnysecular

it’s true the highways are important for commutes and work and trades. but at rush hour a third of traffic is for errands not work related. I think maybe if people had shops within walking distance, there would be fewer cars on the road at rush. The new subdivisions are strictly residential, if they allow shops inside the subdivision them maybe 20% of people will walk for milk and butter instead of drive? I don’t know, i feel like, if you have a day off and need to run errands, once you’re in the car, you’re not just gonna drive to the nearest plaza, instead you drive to Costco and all of a sudden you’re on the highway making everyone else’s commute slower lol.

They present hwy system is strangling trucking. The toll hwy cost is just unreal so 98% of trucks stick to the 401 hence unbearable traffic jams. For those of you that think trucks are too big and should be half the size. Think, everything that is purchased from anywhere came by truck somewhere in the system. so you can have smaller trucks but are you ready to pay $30 for a pint of strawberries. I live by Windsor Ont. and it would take me about 3hrs and 45 min. to get to Bowmanville Ont. to see my son. It now takes me 5hrs. 30 min. to get to his house now. I propose that people who are not engaged in a business activity should only be allowed on the hwys at certain times of day or stay of hwys for any trip in Greater Toronto area. Then traffic can move much better for commercial transit business. I lived most of my life in the Toronto area as a heavy equipment float truck driver and I can speak with confidence about these things. The one thing I would like to know is where is all the money going that the Ministry of Transportation collects from license plates for all vehicles, from fines collected, road taxes on fuel and a few other places they collect from. I did about 10hrs. research and found that for the most part they keep it a secret. I was looking for all taxes pertaining to the Min. of Transportation not the budget allotment. When I was in construction when the 403 was going through Mississauga. In the 80s I was at a high level site meeting with my boss, after the meeting during conversation a government official was upset because of the 403 funding, He was sick of the Ministry of Transportation being took by the provincial government taking 35% of the Min. of Trans. tax revenue and diverting it to Welfare and Public Housing. He thought, as well as a lot of other people at the meeting that Ontario government could jokingly be paved with gold if M.of T could keep all of it's money. The Ont. government takes Min. of Trans. money and giving it to other government ministries just so they can fund other ministries that throw away money on votes should be illegal. The way government budgets money should be thoroughly investigated and made transparent to the public. Please, no more selling our hwys to European companies. they are Ontario hwys. so lets keep it Ontarian. If there must be a toll to pay for the hwy then set up a gov. operated toll booth just like hoe they paid for the Garden City Bridge over the Welland Canal and when it is paid for, remove the booths. I would love to be able run certain ministries for a 4 yr term and straighten the place out.
