Still, the movie has conflict, a part of the story which it's really important. Without conflict, then there's no purpose of the plot. You don't need villains to make conflicts, it happen when everything sets up for the story either a hero's quest or dealing with issues.

I think the fact the Barley wasn’t jealous one bit of Ian’s abilities helped the movie a TON. As someone with a very intelligent and driven sibling, I’ve never been jealous of them. People would ask if I felt like I was in their shadow, but I’ve never felt that way. The fact is that some people are simply gifted in intelligence and drive, I was not, and that’s fine; I was more so gifted in the arts than academics. Also, the fact the mom never compared her boys was wonderful. My parents have never compared me or my sibling in anything- they excelled in sports, music, and smarts while I liked drawing, exploring nature, and being an artist. It’s the classic “one sibling is better in the eyes of society and therefore you should be jealous” but what does that matter when your own worth isn’t hinged on others success? It would’ve been very annoying if Barley was jealous of Ian’s magical ability because it’s just a cheap cop out for some drama and sibling rivalry, but it would make zero sense. Barley stepped in as Ian’s brother and father figure when their dad was gone, and while me and my sibling have our own father, they also did that for me as I grew up. I’d come to them when I couldn’t tell our parents what was wrong. I don’t know, it’s very nice to see a realistic family on an animated screen without unnecessary sibling rivalry :)

I agree. In full honesty, Barley being jealous of Ian would not only be typical, but also doesn’t fit in the main themes of the story. Onward is about living in the present, while reminiscing the past. I do wish Barley did have some sort of arc though. He’s still a lovable fella but something to encourage his development would make him a more fleshed out character.

I think that's a really important takeaway. It seems people generally focus on the technology vs. magic aspect, but overlook a different theme from Onward. The creator, Dan Scanlon, also lost this father at a young age and wanted to explore the magic idea of spending one more day with him.

*Spoilers* This movie did something I never thought I would see in cinema: the kid who never met their deceased relative still doesn't meet them. My grandpa died from cancer two years before I was born. And, growing up, I wished I had one memory of him. The majority of my family has memories of him, and I wanted so badly to have memories of my own. I thought I was the only girl in the world who missed someone she never met. It's gotten much easier over the years, but I still stare at photos of him, wishing I could hear his voice. Because of that, I found stories of people meeting a deceased relative they never met before but really, really wanted to and getting to unrealistic. Why could they do that, but not me? But this movie finally gave me someone who goes on the quest but doesn't meet their deceased one. And I cried for Ian. Someone who knows what it's like. To be so close, but still so, so far. But, Ian did it for Barley in the end. And it made me realize I would do the same for my family, who remember him. Even if it meant I didn't. True, this isn't Pixar's best, but it doesn't need to be. For me, at least. All I needed was Ian being someone I understood.

I agree, I felt that him realizing Barley was a father/male figure in his life was more important for him than meeting his dad for a fleeting moment. Also the fact that he realized that Barley deserved to see their dad one last time to say goodbye. Onward's take on magic vs. technology seems to be that the best world is one that contains both. Magic is good because it's rare and awe-inspiring and allows unique talents to shine. Technology is good because it's widespread and available to everyone and levels the playing field. They're good for opposite reasons and it's not a contradiction. If nothing else, I am impressed with the movie's achievement in walking that line.

@@sadlobster1 The focus of the film's plot is very much on rediscovering magic, but it doesn't denigrate technology in the process. It's not "technology is bad, magic was so much better and we should go back to it" but "isn't it a shame that we lost magic when we gained technology."
@Mike14264
@Mike14264 4 жыл бұрын
It reminds me of the whole "Nature is good, Technology is bad" thing, it's not that one-sided. Nature is literally that, a force of nature, it has order but also chaos, creation and destruction. Technology, on the other hand, is more of a tool, its neutral, and it can be used for both good and bad, depending of the intentions of the user.

Yeah but it’s a decent movie coming from a studio that has all the money they could ever need to hire any writer they want, the problem is people think Pixar is the same studio they were 15 years ago but they aren’t, they’re just another company underneath Disney’s catalogue, their story-telling quality has decreased over the years and now they rely on emotional manipulation, they want to make us cry so we get emotionally attached and can’t see the flaws in their movies, coming from them we shouldn’t conform with mediocrity, they’re just being lazy at this point but they know it doesn’t matter since people are going to defend every movie because “it made them cry”

Okay, I feel like they may have pushed it a bit, but *Spoilers ahead* Ian was 100% justified in that scene. He thought he'd lost his only chance to see his father because of Barley's foolish antics. Of course he's going to react in a rash way! Also, while most movies resolve this in a really quick and contrived way, Onward actually made it seem real. Ian had an epiphany about how much Barley meant to him, and Barley still hadn't given up on him. So all in all, I feel like it was handled pretty well.

I liked that Barley didn't become just another bully, like many other elder siblings. Heck, the closest he comes to giving his brother grief is purely based on how excited he his at the prospect of a quest, and urging Ian to push himself further. He's never condescending, perhaps overzealous in the aid he gives, and when you think about it, he's not really a meathead; dude's technically an historian in his own right. All that said, you can still understand how Ian would feel exasperating by this enthusiasm, and how Barley may mean well, but potentially risks letting said enthusiasm get the better of him. Also, Guinevere's "last ride" was awesome.
@eaglefan2569
@eaglefan2569 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, some good Barley appreciation! I adored what they did with him and the role he contributed to the story. They could've so easily had him be a stupid older brother that Ian learns to live with, or even a lovable meathead, or even a jealous older brother upset that his younger brother gets to do the thing he's been wanting to do. And they do... absolutely none of that. Sure his sense of common sense isn't the sharpest, but his genuine care and knowledge of history and the things he's passionate about show his wisdom. Instead of being mad that Ian got magic instead of himself, he was ecstatic and continually provided support in helping Ian discover the arcane. I can see why some people would be turned off by how boisterous Barley is, and think he's simply the comic relief, but if that's all anyone gets from his character then they're truly blinded by cliches and stereotypes. Barley was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the movie for me.

I feel like this movie is just Pixar. Heartwarming and simplistic. Everyone always expects the absolute best of pixar, but when a too simple of a film comes out everyone is against the company. Huge film making companies can make simplistic movies too. Me, a minor, thought the movie felt a little bit generic. (I am also the one who didn’t feel an ounce of emotion during coco, but i still loved it) But i loved the movie and it will forever be one of my favorites of pixar, despite all of their hit successes.

I mean i guess onward is also more meant to be sad for people who did lose a parent, or have never had a dad. I mean i cried really hard when watching onward and same with coco, coco is actually my all time fav movie and i have watched it many times. I don't think onward is bad i just think most people can't relate to it, i mean kids who have never met their dad don't really care about it. My friend has never met her dad and she said she doesn't even want to meet him because of it. And well not that many watchers have lost their parent to a sickness, ofc there are some but most haven't.

@@benrii_ Honestly, reviewing oneself or not and the fact whether we like a movie more or less, also depends on the person, in my opinion! From how is empathetic, emotional, sensitive, from her tastes, etc... to say, I have both my parents, fortunately, and I have no brothers, yet Onward immediately became one of my favourite movies ever (right in the highest part), I see myself again for the fact that I would like to speak with my grandfather that I don't remember (having died when I was one year and two months old), and with my two unborn brothers, however, at the same time, I know I have the best parents in the world by my side and that I will always have there, and that I also have a family that supports me, loves me and is always by my side, despite everything and everyone (and in fact, in Onward, I also see my family)! Onward is my second favourite Pixar movie by far without equality (which is very rare, because I'm a very undecided person on the choices and as far as movies are concerned, I don't really have a movie that I don't like at all, because I find beauty in everything, and, in fact, it's very simple that I like a movie, even a lot, but it's very difficult that it becomes one of my absolute favourites, let alone "the" absolute favourite)! I love Onward madly 😍💙 PS: Coco is also my favourite movie *of all time* (and I think it's an Absolute Masterpiece of Cinema criminally misunderstood and underrated), and I never had one despite my crazy love for Animation and Cinema, and I said everything!!! I've seen it more than 100 times (I'm not kidding, I'm really doing badly with this movie! Even with others it's not that I'm doing very well, like Onward, but with Coco I have overcome myself)! I cry at his mere thought (this actually also with the various movies that I have in second place, including Onward), I say to venerate it, I see in it me and my family for everything, and it's something really incredible, for me! Coco always literally leaves me breathless!!! How nice to have found another Coco lover at these levels, it's very difficult to find it! ✨💜

@@benrii_ Yes indeed, only of very few people on the Internet I have read that it's their absolute favourite movie, because I think Coco "would be a movie for everyone, but it's not a movie for everyone", for a lot of reasons with not much sense, in my opinion, and you think that I have also read those who say they hate this movie (a feeling that I reserve only and only for the things that deserve it, because hate is a bad feeling in itself), and I can't really understand this, but still I respect the tastes of others (although in my opinion they lose us here, but ok)... you know, I also cry for nothing (really, literally, I'm super empathetic, sensitive and emotional), but never, and I say never, I'm I happened to cry and get so excited and so deeply with a movie, seriously, Coco turned my life upside down, and I didn't expect it at all! I mean, I thought yes, I would have loved it (being a crazy lover of Animation and Cinema), but I would never have thought of these levels! As already said more or less in the other comment, Coco touched my soul, made me reflect more than I have always done, became a part of me, made me grow, helped me, I cry at his mere thought (in reality, I do it with movies in 2nd place, like Onward), I venerate him, and also, I see both myself and my family in it! As for Onward, I'm very sorry for your past, really! I can only imagine how you can feel while watching the movie (you really lived what Barley lived), but I believe that movies like this can help you a lot, and I can tell you that your grandmother will always be close to you, that she's certainly not mad at you for this and that she wouldn't want to see you feel so bad for her! Remember, she will always be close to you, with you and within you, remember her with joy! And you know, from what you wrote, I don't know why, but you really give me the impression that you're a really nice person (and it's not something I think of everyone, on the contrary) 💜 Anyway really, I don't dare to imagine how I will feel these movies in the future, already seeing how much I feel them without having had so far great losses in the family and still living with my parents ... because seriously, I think Coco and Onward are the movies that I feel the most, and I never expected this from either of them (not in this way, I mean) ... they're the movies that touched my soul, they're purifying, intense, magic but realistic, powerfull, delicated but raw, sad but hopeful, pure, simple but complex and layered, very reflective and psychological movies, that really talk about what life is... I love them infinitely, and I think both are Masterpieces and both underrated (although Coco is absolutely on another level, in my opinion) 💖

I hadn't seen the movie but from the trailer I was sooooo afraid it had the "Bright" Syndrome i.e. take the modern world then just plonk Tolkein races and D&D monsters in and call it a day without understanding the implication to society and how such a world would develop and advance. Is my fear justified? Cellspex's review piqued my curiousity but I'm gonna have to wait till it comes to DVD to watch it.

I liked the premise of modern fantasy but they kind of wasted it. The centaur have a normal car, we only saw one type of pet, we didn't saw where the mermaids live, why do the pixies have big motorcycles? and the most interesting looking creatures we see are the manticore and the lizard lady, the others are basically blue humans. Also they break the premise at the end, magic is supposed to be difficult but Ian learned it in a day.
@RobotTanuki

@@bleke7434 Ah that's what I'm afraid of. One thing that also bothered me from the trailer was the idea that they needed to defeat the manticore for a quest, as if they don't know that manticores are members of civilised society by that point. It's like if, in our world currently, a European decide to travel to "The Orient" to trade in silk and spices over the Silk Road. It seems like the characters know and do things that the AUDIENCE know, not what THEY should know in that world. Edit: Was in a rush so head wasn't clear. A better analogy would be a European who decides, in 2020, that he needs to "start his quest" and travel overland to Jerusalem to retake it in a crusade.

It might have helped greatly I went in completely blind, I didnt watch a single trailer before I went in, I just saw the title and thought it was worth a try, and it was! I nearly groaned when i thought it was gonna be some coming of age teen movie, and for a moment I was worried Id be too old for it, but I was pleasantly surprised, his age had nothing to do with the movie. Definitely worth a watch, dont worry about how... Gimicky the premise seemed at first. My favourite scene had to be *spoilers maybe?* the moment where the rope fell off his waist, and the older brother looked like he was crying or trying not to cry, and he was incredibly terrified of what would happen once he noticed, and I loved it. I loved the ending, I loved that it wasnt some fairytale magic ending that fixed everything, I loved that they comitted to the ending being bittersweet.

Mom - is shown early on shown to wrestle her sons and be willing to do anything for them and has a final fight seen Step-dad : is seen by boys as lame and kind of goofy BUT hes a positive police officer character and is seen to be a decent guy, just kind of dad joke ish Manticore lady : bad ass adventurer turned business owner who realizes she missed adventuring and has lost her spirit because of trying to run a business The gay cop actually was lied to by boys BUT realized it almost as soon as it happened, called backup and THEN tailed the boys The half dad was talked about here. You get a feel for who he was and as goofy as he seemed you also got a feeling that the mom has a type. Men who put love of family first and try to show love threw humor. Even the nameless construction workers are shown to just be descent competent people trying to do their job despite the “history buff” constantly trying to preserve crumbling landmarks The closest thing to adults that are treated as a foil for the sake of foil would be the Pixies but even they were to show that magic was alive and well but that everyone was too reliant on the ease of technology to try to use it Younger brother is easily irritated BUT he is aware of his flaw early on, you get the idea that he struggles with that and anxiety early on so the blow up at end of movie (that ill add is him crying and walking a few yards from other brother, not exactly a blow up. More like a mild fight) stems from his annoyance he battles anyway It also has plot relevance to how things end

@@m.ivyluna4632 This! It's so refreshing to have a movie that doesn't center on family drama, or for that matter, even have a villain. They could've so easily gone down the typical route of "struggling single mother", "lazy or evil boyfriend", "unnecessary fallout between siblings because of jealousy one can do things the other can't", "adults are ignorant and the youth aren't", "main character gets bullied but manages to get better", etc, so on and so forth. And it does none of those things, which was ultimately the best choice to make (even if it makes it seem bland to the outer viewer). I’m a huge fan of the company and this was the first one that I saw the commercials and thought I would wait for Disney+ to get it there. But what convinced me was the preview they showed at Disneyland (besides space mountain), it showed the characters, the love they have for each other, and how they JUST found the stick to bring the dad back. It made me really want to watch it so I watched it premiere night. I cried so many times and it was honestly one of the most enjoyable movie theater experience I’ve seen in a while by them. I genuinely loved this film. There were so many small things that were great, and I thought it was quite funny. It was definitely emotional for me, though if you've lost someone recently it may be a bit upsetting as there are a few scenes that will hit hard. Mainly with the end and a few other small scenes. But the charcater growth and the relationship between the two brothers were amazing, and how did they manage to make us feel emotional over a pair of disembodied legs.

I watched the outtakes and bts of this movie, and was really interested to find that originally the idea was the Ian was captivated by magic, not Barley. It felt very interesting when the director was talking about it and could’ve brought a whole new eagerness and passion to Ian’s character to meet his father, to bond through magic. But when thinking about it after, I’m so glad they chose to give Barley the fascination with magic.. I feel that without it, Barley would merely be another side character dragged along for the ride with Ian just to basically babysit him and allow room for dialogue. But giving Barley the fascination with magic, and Ian the actual magical powers... I think was just plain genius. To have the brothers form a bond so pure and non jealous created two main characters who were both able to go through their own individual character development, together. I just loved this movie honestly.

I’m glad there was no villain in this movie. Similar to frozen 2 (also had no villain), both movies accomplished the goal of a great intense movie because of the character development. Ian goes through the realization that his brother was always there for him and Elsa finds herself and is self-satisfied. When there is great character development and story, there is never a need for a villain

I just want to chime in, and say it is refreshing to have 2 brothers in a movie, on an adventure, where a love interest doesn't get involved, and provide a wedge between them. It was so nice and refreshing to have a movie with multiple protagonists that are brothers, that don't end up bickering over a love interest. The older brothers constant love and admiration for his younger brother, was what made this movie an instant classic for me. My father and I don't get along. This is mainly due to my brother, and how he behaves, and is treated by my father, despite this behavior. For so many years I chased my father's pride and admiration, and despite this, I the older brother (and possibly only legitimate son) was never treated as well as my brother. Seeing a pair of brothers hold each other up, and a father who, despite not really knowing one, was still idolized by his sons, because he's an actual good father, opened up a part of me I didn't know hurt. It was nice to see that even just in animation, it's possible, for brothers to have a bond as strong as the one so often portrayed in sisters, and that fathers can support both of their sons.
@Duck-mn8xp

Sibling bonds are super important to show in media. Lots of the time, they get overshadowed by love interests, like you said, and I wish that wasn’t the case. A lot of sibling relationships in media are obviously written by only children or people who aren’t close to their siblings, but when someone with a bond to their siblings writes them, they’re incredible. TAZ:B spoilers, just names and character reveals Take Taako and Lup from The Adventure Zone: Balance. Theyre played and written by two brothers, so thief brother-sister interactions are believable. They joke around and make fun of each other, but they love each other unconditionally. Both Lup and Taako have love interests, and they get adequate time with their loves, but the sibling relationship is still prominent and amazing. The show is written and all the characters are played by 3 brothers and their dad, so what can you expect, really. They do have to role play kissing their brothers sometimes, though, and that’s awkward, but gay rights.

this movie although it's "not the best" in many people's eyes, but i thoroughly enjoyed it myself, and it's one of my top 3 favourite movies of all time. i was amazed by the visuals, and i loved the moral of the story, that you have to move on, and that even if you did - there's still people who you love right next to you, helping you along the way! i have a little brother of my own, which is why i resonate with the characters that much (being a loud & energetic sister). it just made me appreciate my brother a lot more though he already means a lot to me in the beginning. so, i would also recommend this film to those who have siblings!

I agree with almost everything you pointed out in this vid, but let me just say this: While it was surprising that we really didn't get as much of the dad, I think it was kind of a genius move that really drove the point home. It's a great way to set up the "twist" without us even seeing the set up. Cinema Wins was what brought this to my attention in their conclusion of "Everything Great About Onward" so if you wanna hear it better, go watch that. The movie was never really about seeing the father - even though that's what Ian & Barley's quest was. The fact is that Ian never really got his dad in the form he wanted, but instead he found a father figure in Barley. If the dad had been more active, we wouldn't really get the chance to see the relationship between Barley & Ian for what it was. Plus it would seem kinda unrealistic for the dad to be more active than he was, seeing as how - well, the lack of his top part eliminates 4 of his 5 senses. But I feel like there's solid reasoning for why we didn't see the dad the way we thought we would, & it furthers the ending beyond "incredibly beautiful" Not kidding when I say my whole family cried watching this.

Okay. I liked it a LOT more than I should have. I legit teared up at the end more than I did during Coco. From when I was born, my dad was there for me, taught me how to do all the things I use today, and introduced me to all the good music from his time, and not the (eh) music from today. At the end, when(after this is spoilers) Ian doesn’t get to meet dad, and barley tells him about the experience, and the wizard name, like, I felt that.
