I was sent this Hornby Dublo Deltic by a chap called Phil who said he got it new in 1962 and it had probably never really been serviced.

It's impressive to come across such an old model that is still in the possession of the original owner that bought it new in the 60's.

That was an interesting service, repair. I enjoy watching your repairs, you are a very patient and knowledgeable man. CREPELLO won the 2000 Guineas and the Derby in 1957. Many locomotives were named after horses.

It’s a testimony to the quality of Hornby build of the time that after 62 years it’s still going strong, and of course your amazing skill to extend its life to hopefully another 62 years. Well done as always Bill and both informative and entertaining.

Traction tires are a problem if they don't seat properly, and some aftermarket tires are just not up to snuff. You took a motor drawing more than a 1/2 an amp and got it down to 0.3 of an amp. I don't get many Hornby locomotives here in the states, so I have never seen that drive system before. If I do run into one of these this reference video will be perfect so thanks in advance. Hi Bill I have a couple of these with John Holland tyres . They are not fast but like all old hornby stuff , bullet proof . My original loco's as bought new by my parents , an 0 6 2 tank and an F8 are circa 1958 and I have a lot more that age all serviced by me and going strong .

A good job there, Bill. I use the traction tyres sold by John Holland for my Dublo diesels - they're the translucent type you mention.

I have a few three rail dublo engines,steam and diesel. Still going strong. I'm 64 and they were passed down to me from my dad. Great video as usual.👍

hi Bill, remember when these came out, but my parents got me the class 20, but it was known as the 1000bhp diesel then, ! i have to say motors and gears have improved since then,

Great to see and very timely as I have a similar (all green) version of the Dublo Deltic of a similar age that still wants to run but has virtually no traction and have been meaning to give her a good clean up and replace the traction tyres. Interesting point is that as long as I can remember this loco, and my father brought her new in the 1960’s, she has always been sluggish at first but after a few circuits seems to “warm up” and settle into good running.

Good evening Bill, Having as part of my fleet several good old Hornby Dublo locomotives, the semi transparrent tyres are I believe are supplied by, what were a Wrenn product, from a company who trades on eBay under the name wrenngalore. While I nave found them to be pretty good, I have found regardless of the locomotlve manufacturer that Marklin Traction tyres are the best, usually stocked by Jedlam Toy and Models, based in Glastonbury or The Engine Shed, Gaugemaster, ln Arundel. All the best, and keep on repairing the loco's, preserving them for future generations. Thank you.Glenn,

I have been wondering if fitting some sound absorbing foam insulation inside the body would help. It's a mostly empty metal box that might act as an echo chamber. Unfortunately I haven't got any dublo diesel models to try it out on.

I keep looking out for an explanation and may have missed it but .. go on .. what's with "The Gnome's Legs". I guess its like 'The Broken Drum' ( you can't beat it!) but I can't work it out .... Love the channel .... mending things is the ultimate therapy and the essence of doing good IMHO ... keep it up and thank you

Bill did once explain, and if memory serves me correctly it was a humerous remark made by Bills Brother about pub names, you can always find a "Gardeners Arms" but never "The Gnomes Legs", a reference to gardeners who decorate their gardens with Garden Gnomes.

There was a pub in my home town called "The Gardeners Arms". My son said to me one day that if he ever owned a pub he'd call it "The Gnome's Legs". There may be a second pub opening on the other side of the layout. It'll be called something equally as daft.

I often wonder if the designers had ever seen the real locomotives they were designing...lol ... Nice service/repair the other traction tyers made a would of difference !

Interesting you mention that, in this instance they hadn't. The prototype hadn't been built at the time hence the original all over green livery, hornby presumed it would be based on the EE type 4. The tumblehome was unknown as well, although dp1 should've been noted, but sans tumblehome likely suited casting better anyway

Just a thought but why did they fit traction tyres to such a heavy loco 🤔

Compared to some modern diesel models it's not really that heavy but yes it would be fine without them unless pulling a heavy load or dealing with gradients. I think Hornby Dublo prided themselves on the pulling power of this model though.

​@oobill there seems to have arisen lately a belief that if a loco is heavy enough it doesn't need traction tyres, which isn't actually a reality. One can run the dublo deltic (or its twin power unit co-bo) Fine without traction tyres, just on grades they're not so great. Older märklin rely very much on traction tyres, again they're heavy weights for H0 (800 to 1200gms) and with their heavy weight on a grade they just spin. I have noticed of course that model railway theory has changed in more recent years, and I think that's where the weight/tyres thing comes into it. Nowadays folks give apocalyptic warnings don't go steeper than a 2% grade. Dark forebodings are given for those extremists who might run 2 1/2 or 3%. Like don't run less than second radius curves etc. With the old märklin 2-10-0's and crocodiles breeze around 11 inch curves. 8 to 10% grades: no probs. Traction tyres were a boon to those who wanted to run their trains in an environment they wanted. An FYI dublo steamers weren't so susceptible: when dublo went two rail they neede plated wheel treads to get electrical conductivity to an acceptable level. With 3 rail of course conductivity issues are basically negated so cast drivers without rims had considerably better grip, and with two rails poor conductivity cast rims just wouldn't work
