Oogenesis: The Process of Egg Cell Production
Oogenesis is the complex and highly regulated process by which immature cells in the ovaries develop into mature egg cells, or ova. This process involves multiple stages and takes several months to complete.
Stages of Oogenesis:
1. Oogonium: Immature cells that proliferate and differentiate into primary oocytes.
2. Primary Oocyte: Undergoes meiosis I and arrests in prophase I.
3. Secondary Oocyte: Completes meiosis II and matures into an ovum.
4. Ovulation: The mature ovum is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube.
