George was prepping for his next HBO special, so not all of the jokes were finished. At the beginning of the show, George says something like, "Not all of these jokes are good. I'm prepping for the HBO Special. You're my guinea pigs to see if this shit is funny." Everyone laughed. My Dad most of all. Great show, he went on for 2-2 1/2 hours straight without a break. You may feel as though it's too late at this point, but I know better, God has saved and revealed himself powerfully to some incredibly staunch unbelievers. That's a good starting point right there, how do you think a person with a strong worldview that there is no God one day just come to know that he is? Obviously, there is not an answer for everything, but I have no doubt many of your questions do have answers. Unfortunately there are many religious people who just go through religious motions that don't, and turn people like yourself away. God lS, and he is good. If you would care to, I would like to try to answer a question or two you may have... But would it matter? Are you objective enough to sincerely consider the other side of the coin, or pre-programmed like Carlin to reject all evidence for God, and make fun of him instead?

Are you not aware that God has chosen to conceal proof of his existence to any except those who want him, or are at least willing to diligently seek him? Until the chocolate frog was discovered in the Amazon just a few months ago, it didn't exist to the world. Not a shred of evidence it existed, much less proof. Not one person could attest to its existence...yet it did. For God, there are millions of people who will attest not just believe, but to supernatural workings attributed to him - evidence. In addition to this testimony, many scientific, historical, archaeological, and philosophical evidences for God. Millions of people as hardcore unbelieving as you and more, one day becoming staunch born-again believers...how exactly does that happen? They demanded the proof, and followed the evidence just like you're doing. Placing their faith in erroneous, fallible people just because they wear a lab coat and tell them things that can bolster their anti-God worldview. Everything I'm saying here is incontrovertible, no need to send links. God revealed himself to me in 2000, I can break that down for you if you like. We all create and embrace "fictions" that have practical value for us. The thing about fiction is it can't be proved. Consequently, the theist's belief in the existence of a diety as characterized in the bible or Koran cannot be proved, nor can the atheist's belief (i.e., fiction) that we inhabit a Godless universe. Whether it's George Carlin or Mark twain, the historical fact is that atheists have committed as many crimes against humanity as theists and is every bit as irrational.
@andredarin89662 жыл бұрын
Mark Twain also said, “I think the goodness, the justice, and the mercy of God are manifested in His works: I perceive that they are manifested toward me in this life; the logical conclusion is that they will be manifested toward me in the life to come, if there should be one.” So much for Twain the athiest.
@andredarin89662 жыл бұрын
@@spikehyzer2323 Many logicians far more intelligent than you (or I)-Acquinas-to name one would differ. A survey of 35,000+ people worldwide by Politico indicated 51% believed religion was essential in creating and sustaining morality. If the atheist as you suggest isn’t under any obligation to prove anything, then neither is the theist. The claimed perception of a diety during a mystical experience is no less substantial than your logic, which is fatally flawed by the cognitive error of generalization. You make an affirmative claim: the singular value of religion is exploitation of others. That claim requires as much proof as belief in the resurrection.

@@mattbarton3757 How do I know what? That Carlin is wrong? He's a clever guy, and all he is doing in this part of his show is reframing the philosophical 'problem of evil' as comedy. (The problem of evil is often used to defend the claim there can't be a good and all-powerful God because there's so much evil in the world, etc.) With comedy as his goal and an audience listening who only wants to be entertained, he doesn't have to live up to rigorous criticism of his views, nor does he have to be philosophically precise in his statement of his position. He just blurts out, in a very confident and entertaining way, the objection to faith like it is obviously the case, making religion and theism "obviously BS". In such a context, his arguments never seriously address the hard questions about evil, the nature of God, what value evil could have in a world where God is still good and allows/ordains evil, and so on. Meanwhile, while Carlin can get away with basically amateur and bad philosophy on a stage for the masses, in environments where the problem of evil _is_ rigorously discussed, especially in academic philosophy, even atheist philosophers have widely conceded that the problem of evil is _not_ a logical problem. That is, they have widely conceded there are no contradictions involved in claiming that a good God can co-exist in a world with evil. Instead, the problem of evil is a different type of problem, most commonly taken to be a _psychological_ problem. In other words, the problem of evil gives expression to the idea that it practically difficult for many people to believe in God because _people have a hard time psychologically coping with the existence of a God that allows evil_ . But, psychological problems like this are not philosophical arguments, and they do not track truth. People can be bothered by the facts. Instead, such arguments track emotions or psychological 'yuck' factors, etc. It is basically like a child whining that they don't like something because they find it offensive. And, so, the real problem with Carlin here is that he's really just bitching about a God he doesn't like, and that has nothing to do with whether that God exists. And any competent Christian thinker will recognize this in about 30 seconds. I enjoy Carlin's comedy as a general rule. I prefer Bill Burr, but Carlin is one of my favorites. He's just wrong here, and his arguments don't work. 🤷♂ Nothing that Christians should get butt-hurt over or bothered by. I've watched this dozens of times, and, since I'm trained in philosophy and have read the literature, I know that the responses aren't that hard to come up with. Carlin's an expert comedian; an amateur philosopher.

George was GREAT. He would beat you over the head with commonsense. He used your logic against. And yes, some of the best delivery ever

Fantastic reaction! Its nice to see ppl who love humor! Usually ppl watch this and get triggered and or start defending god and faith which is missing the point of this Yes it makes you think but it's also the funny ramblings of the greatest comedian philosopher we've ever had😍💖

You guys should react to George's "advertising and bullshit". It's partially an earlier version of this but the 'advertising' routine that leads into it should be new to you and it's absolute gold.

Joe Pesci is an actor who appeared in Lethal Weapon, My Cousin Vinny, Goodfellas, Home Alone 1 & 2, Raging Bull & Casino. And most recently The Irishman. Great actor.

Carlin had it right about prayer. In the Book of Matthew (my favorite), Jesus tells his followers not to bother asking God for stuff. "He already knows what you need," Jesus says. "When you pray, just go in your closet and close the door (don't be like those obnoxious hypocrites who pray loudly on street corners and in the synagogue)." Then he gives them 'The Lord's Prayer,' which basically says "OK, God, do your thing. I'm good."

Among many other things, George Carlin was Ruffus in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and did the narration in many Thomas The Tank Engine episodes.

Pryor was one of the most naturally funny comics to exist, and one of my favorites. Carlin was one of the most intentionally funny comics to exist, and is my favorite. Cheers!

You guys seem open minded, thanks for giving this a listen. This is one of my favorite comedy routines and explanations for my position in a quick and succinct way.

I miss George Carlin. He pulled no punches and we need more comedians, people, like him out there. People who will speak the truth and not care what anyway thinks. I wish we could bring back more of this honesty.

Uncle George was the voice and conscience of a generation. There were Bill Cosby albums, which I still remember fondly, then came Carlin, then Cheech & Chong and then everyone else...as far as humor albums in homes. I never tire of Carlin. Sadly, some stand-up comics will get pity laughter. George, on the other hand, is also a writer, and professional. He is comedy. His whole body is funny. Like Richard Pryor, who needn't ever say a word. Love the show! Love humor. Bill Hicks and Tim Minchin are also smart and funny like George and Richard.
