Peter Sobocki I am in awe with every episode from you this year. With so much uncertainty this season and most of the sailing community in lockdown, you hit the jackpot. It has been a great privilege to share your epic sailing adventure in your home country... stunning scenery, magnificent history and wonderful culture - Thank you ! You know, The Swedish Tourist Association should be paying you or make you ambassadors. I could not imagine anyone presenting Sweden to the world than you pair... or three!

Ahoy RAN, Your summer sail has been a treat to follow along with. My brother has an old college friend who has been living in Sweden for years with his Swedish wife and children. My brother has joined them for sails many summers over the past 15 years and now I get to see what he's been talking about. Nice! Vera is looking so adorable and is growing fast. A real Viking princess, out on the water with the King and Queen. The 44 foot boat seems just about right sized for your family and visiting guests. It looks like a good, cozy ship for sure. Thanks for the adventure and fun. Keep looking up and best wishes to all! -------- I wanted to comment on your RAN Episode #208 a few weeks back. @ 15:09 and @ 15:32 you can see the atmospheric mirage effect of differing temperature inversions and how they create mirages along the horizons. (Best seen on a large screen.) The distant land forms were reflected and inverted via a superior mirage. ( aty.sdsu.edu/mirages/mirintro.html ) It's these conditions that produce very good Green Flashes. @ 16:30 Your Sunset hopes are stated and I'm sure you may have seen a Green Flash if you had a clear horizon and not one blocked by a land mass. A cold, clear high pressure system often clears the atmosphere of water vapor right down to the ocean surface so you don't get any absorption or scattering of the Sunset Image. (Binoculars are safe for just the last 1/4 diameter of Sun before it sets.) The autumn should bring cooler, high pressure systems that will scrub the atmosphere of any water vapor and thus provide a very distinct horizon. Good for the Green Flash. At close to 60 degrees North, the angle of the ecliptic to the horizon is very shallow this time of year, so the Sun takes a long time to set. Explorers in the Arctic have reported seeing the Sun take 20 minutes to set from time of first contact to last glimpse. That makes for very long Green Flashes. Hardly a flash at all, more like a static green traffic light! Ha. If you have clear nights, be sure to check out the stars, constellations, planets and Moon. This autumn 2020 season will be a good one with both JUPITER and SATURN very prominent all night long. They are going to pass each other (conjunction) on Dec 21st 2020 (winter solstice). They rise in the evening and set just before sunset now. Watch over the coming months as they close in on each other. It only happens every 20 years or so. The next time around, Vera will be all grown and away to university. MARS is coming to opposition in mid October and is becoming very bright and easily spotted. The Red Planet rises after dusk and traverses the night sky to be high overhead at sunrise. (Maybe a little lower in the south for your Swedish latitude.) It only comes to opposition and brightens like this every two years. Catch it and follow along every clear night through October and then watch as it fades in the coming winter. VENUS is very bright and high in the east two hours before Sunrise. It has already begun its' slow decent back toward the eastern horizon and so will be lower and dimmer each morning for the rest of the year, as it orbits around the far side of the SUN in the coming months. ========= skyandtelescope.org/observing/sky-at-a-glance/ Sky and Telescope: This Week's Sky at a Glance (Visit the link to see some great graphics! A picture is worth a thousand words.) Follow along each week as the Moon makes its monthly orbit around the Earth, along the ecliptic through the Zodiac, and passes all the planets in succession. Jupiter and Saturn (magnitudes -2.6 and +0.3, respectively) shine in the south in early evening. Jupiter is the brightest; Saturn is 8° to its left (east). They're perfectly horizontal right around the end of twilight, like some great pair of eyes. Lower right of Jupiter after dark is the handle of the Sagittarius Teapot. FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 Jupiter this evening shines just a couple degrees above the gibbous Moon for North America (A little more to the right [west] for Sweden) To their east, Saturn waits its turn tomorrow. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 Now the eastward-marching Moon shines closer to Saturn than to Jupiter. The three are, of course, at very different distances: The Moon is 1.3 light-seconds from you, Jupiter is currently 37 light minutes distant, and Saturn is 77 light-minutes away. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 Full Moon tonight (exact at 1:22 a.m. EDT : 7:22 AM in Sweden). The Moon shines in dim Aquarius. The coming of September means that Scorpius, which was the proud starring constellation of the southern sky in July, is now tilting over and lying down in the southwest after dark, preparing to bed down and drift off for the season. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 The waning gibbous Moon rises around the end of twilight this evening. Once it's up, watch for fiery, red Mars, now unusually bright at magnitude -2.0, to rise about a fist-width or a little more to the Moon's lower left (east). They climb high as evening grows late. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 The Moon and Mars rise together in the east about a half hour after the very end of twilight. For sky watchers in North America, they'll be only about 1° apart or less. By dawn Sunday, they'll stand high in the southwest 2° or 3° apart. Mars rises in the east only about a half hour after the end of twilight. It emerges orange and bright (magnitude -1.8), far below the Andromeda-Pegasus constellation complex. Mars climbs higher through the night. It shines at its highest and telescopic best by around 4 a.m. daylight-saving time, lording over the world from high in the south. It's near the dim Knot of Pisces. In a telescope this week Mars grows from 18½ to 19½ arcseconds in apparent diameter. That's already as big as it appears at its average opposition, but it's still got a ways to go. When Earth finally catches up to and passes Mars at opposition in early October, it will be 22.6 arcseconds wide and will shine at a Jupiter-bright magnitude -2.6. Venus (magnitude -4.3, in Gemini) rises in deep darkness two hours before dawn begins, a weird UFO of a thing in the east-northeast. By the time dawn gets under way, Venus blazes brightly high in the east as shown above. Venus stands just a little lower each morning, while the background stars move rapidly to the upper right as the days progress. Venus will cross the line from Pollux to Procyon on September 1st.

I checked both time sections you indicated, Seamus, and I have to say there was no atmospheric lens in either of them. The first, by the way, was Vera in a swing in front of a stone wall. There was no inversion, either. I know how these effects look like, because I fly. I've checked because an atmospheric effect just like this was involved in the sinking of the Titanic. The Arctic Ocean (North of Norway), just as the North Atlantic, as well, are typical places for such weather events. However, a lens effect with a mirrored inversion is extremely rare. To my knowledge, only one filmed occurrence exists (a trawler floating above he sea, but this is a different story). Given the rarity, I rushed to check it in hope of a new documented case. Unfortunately, it was for naught.
@seamusdaley39614 жыл бұрын
@@SerbanOprescu I'm sorry for the confusion, I meant these time stamps to reference Episode #208 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIm8p3aZeZ5kg6c ); my bad. I'll add my comments to that Episode for future reference as well. I've made slight adjustments to the time stamps so the sections of video are anticipated. On a large screen, You can see the mirage creates what looks like an overhang off to the right of the island or landmass we're seeing (and center of @15:32 .) That is the inverted image above (superior to) the real image. On my 27" desk-top monitor I can just barely make out the gray band or "Wegener's Blank (or Reflecting) Strip". ( aty.sdsu.edu/explain/simulations/BS/blank.html ) Often this 'optical phenomena' is confused as a fog bank. (NOTE: These phenomena are very fine and hard to see without optical aid. Magnification via binoculars, telescope or telephoto lens make a big difference in seeing these observations.) There was a great documentary (Titanic's Final Mystery - google it) on KZbin (now removed) that described this Blank Strip's contribution to the sinking of the Titanic. Very similar conditions to what RAN was sailing through. Calm, cold northern waters with no wind, very clear and warm days and a high pressure, stationary system sitting over the area. These seemingly idyllic, beautiful, warm days can mask a treachery of optical illusion for the unaware. These 'optical phenomena' are mostly seen from low level I think. They rely on a shallow, glancing angle so the light rays only need to bend ever so slightly to create the effects. I can't speak to what you may see flying. I've seen very cool images taken from space showing very interesting effects of the upper atmosphere on background stars. Be sure to check the links in my original post for observations of mirage effects over the water. There are many, very good images and videos. The many types of GREEN FLASH are a consequence of the varied mirages produced by inversion layers in the atmosphere. Titanic's Final Mystery: www.imdb.com/video/vi139110425?playlistId=tt2133359&ref_=tt_pr_ov_vi Thanks for commenting, I'll make the corrections soon.

Ran you 2 are a breath of fresh air, you show us some of the beautiful places on earth and give some history about where you guys are at, love that about you guys. On another note when you started the engine after you sprayed the belts for the 24 volt alternator , it looked like their was a lot play in the 12 volt alternator on the left side, it could have been the camera angle but it did look to loose. Just a heads up and another thing to check next time you are down their. Keep up the great videos love your channel.

Yes, I saw that too. But the longer belt I am sure Johan checked. It looks lose when starting up, but the tension is probably just right!
@RANSailing4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you’re right the 12 volt belt flops around a bit since it’s pretty long... The belt tension is however correct and there’s no slipping. In a perfect world I think it should have an idler pulley mounted to help stabilize it. Cheers!

I'm very jealous about how good your engine looks. However, it caught my eye that the belt to the upper alternator flops around quite a lot. I don't know the tension, of course, but it looks like - with the long span from the drive pulley to the alternator - it needs an idler pulley. Just a thought...
@RANSailing4 жыл бұрын
I have noticed this also, even if the belt tension is correct it flops a bit... It’s a Volvo original bracket kit for the extra alternator so you would think that they are on top of these things but maybe not. At least there’s no slipping on the 12 volt alternator. Cheers!

Taken from manual, read to end: Your belt will tend to stretch during the first several times you run your engine. Make it a part of your normal pre-flight check to test belt deflection and re-adjust belt tension when needed. If you notice an accumulation of black dust on your alternator and surrounding engine area, check belt tension. If the belt is tensioned and you still experience belt dusting, it may be necessary to reduce horsepower load on your belt with the regulator’s Amp Manager function (if equipped), or you may find that a different brand of belt may work more effectively with your charging system
