To your question about what kind of project to have during labor, I say something simple. As labor progresses, contractions can get bad enough that you'll want to set your project down. But, once they're over, you'll be fine to pick it back up again. You don't want an overly complicated pattern you have to try to figure out where you left off at because, by the time you figure it out, you have to put it down again for more contractions. With something simple, you just keep knitting as soon as you pick it up. At least that's my advice based on how my 3 times in labor went. I hope all goes smoothly for you and baby during labor and delivery! It's truly an amazing experience.

Absolutely! And if you want to continue working on it once baby is here, I’d say something small so you can work on it with you baby on you/on a nursing pillow. Like a hat, socks or mittens.

Speaking from experience: People are going to ask never-ending questions about your insidey parts, are you breast feeding, etc. Remember to shut that line of topic down if you feel the need to because it is your body, your privacy. With regards to knitting projects: I would say stick to something simple that requires no thought and if you are distracted and make mistakes, they will be easier to fix. I had a c-section with my kiddo who was also born 5 weeks early, either way you slice it labor is stressful and painful and will DEFINITELY pull your focus away from detail work. There comes a point when your body just takes over and you are along for the ride. That being said...the baby is totally worth it. Congrats mama!

This is soo true! My advice would be - if you have a baby that is hard to put down (and that is soo natural and normal), try baby carrier. As a knitter, carrying and holding a baby on your hand for longer periods of time can cause something that is called Mothers thumb (some type of tendonosis, aka inflammation). I used to carry my toddler in my hand when he did not want to walk and I am on a knitting break for over 4 months now..

oh man, when even strangers ask if you have enuogh milk, like, wtf? I actualy didn`t have enough milk, so these questions were so triggering to me. what`s even the point? It reminds me of when people kept asking me if my family was ok during covid. My mum actually died of covid, but I kept lying that yeah, everybody`s fine, cause I didn`t wanna talk about it. people can be so insensitive

For the question about knitting in labor: I’m currently pregnant with my third. Every pregnancy is different. Even for the same parents! With my first I would’ve wanted something simple, for my second it was such an easy labor I could’ve done something complicated and really enjoyed it. For this one, I’m preparing to have something simple and small and I’m also planning on working on your Pride and Pearls cardigan where it’s got more to it that just stockinette. In other words: bring both and see how you feel when you get there!

Amen to this! Labor is a very dynamic and varying experience for everyone. Your needs and preferences can change drastically throughout. Having options of simple vs complicated is what I also advise. You may also find you go into labor in the middle of the night and you’re too exhausted to work on anything. That’s what happened with both of my babies

I would go with something simple to knit during labour. You will be stopping and starting, and something that needs more concentration will become frustrating. Good luck. It will be interesting to hear how much knitting you actually get done. I have three children, and I remember preparing my labour nag for my first child. It was that big I looked like I was moving in.

I’m going to give the most frustrating advice for labor knitting: you won’t know in advance what you need! 😬 It depends on how labor progresses. If it’s a really long labor with lots of downtime it might be good to have something complicated and distracting. But it may start off quicker and more painful and you won’t have the brain capacity to do more than focus on labor. And the funny thing about labor is that sometimes everything you plan for gets thrown out the window once you’re in it because you don’t feel the same! Sometimes things you thought you would love really annoy you or make you mad 😅 Also, unsolicited advice: sleep as much as you can in early labor!

Hello from the UK. I can't talk about labour as I had 4 c-sections, but I do know you'll be so overwhelmed with your son and the beauty of it all that you'll find you hardly pick up the needles for the first month or so. Enjoy every moment ❤

I know what you mean about getting burnt out on all of the learning and research and information overload regarding pregnancy. There comes a time when you just want to turn inward, quiet the noise and appreciate your own experience of your unique pregnancy. It won't come again in this exact way so I hope you enjoy your last few weeks in a very personal way. (I cannot WAIT so make this fisherman's rib cardigan!)

It’s a great idea to keep yourself busy especially in early labor, doing “life as normal” as you progress through labor is one of the most helpful things you can do I think. I was induced with my first and being in the hospital for the entire labor experience and fully focused on JUST that was so hard, but my second was a homebirth and I did not even realize it was in labor until I was in active labor and I gave birth within the next hour lol. Movement is so key in labor progressing, so if you plan to be knitting at home just take frequent breaks and move around as much as possible, especially through contractions it really helps.

You look beautiful! Congratulations on getting to 8 months! Speaking from experience, I don't think it matters whether your labor is particularly complex, you are probably going to be a little distracted... whether you're having contracts, waiting for contractions, being checked over by doctors, having visitors, the waiting is rather distracted waiting. As to a knitting project, I would suggest something that gives you comfort, and doesn't require all your attention. I hope you have a wonderful labor, and get to do your knitting. :) Going into it without a lot of expectations is probably the best way. Happy Baby! Cannot wait to hear you have been safely delivered of a happy and healthy little one.

I was a former Maternity nurse for decades (no children of my own though). It's honestly hard to answer your question re: a project to bring with you when you are in labor! What is a big project to me is likely one you could practically do blindfolded! 😂 Seriously, if possible....I would bring one of each as long as it doesn't involve too many supplies! I could relate to both being good at different stages. I'm sorry this answer is likely not very helpful! Otherwise, thinking of you during this lovely time. Don't forget to keep up with drinking your water/fluids!! (The nurse in me had to throw that in!!) 🤭 👍 💕

The project during labour I made was a crochet rabbit for my newborn, even when my waters broke I still kept on finishing it, I refused to go into labour without a finished rabbit 😅. But the labour took 10hrs and I really quickly forgot about any projects but labour. My second labour was 2hrs so I had no time 😊

Having had 4 children, my advice is to carry on as if labour hasn’t started. It’s very exciting when it’s your first but if you just think about the labour, it makes the time drag! My best labour was with my last, mild contractions all day which I ignored and carried on with my planned day, in the evening they actually stopped so I took the opportunity to go to bed and get rest (as opposed to trying to get it going again), and within a couple of hours it was all back on and my baby was born a few hours later. All the best - life is going to change and it will be a challenge but go with the flow 😊😊

I don’t think this is silly at all! Distraction between contractions in early labour is key!!! I’d go with something simple and relaxing, like stockinette stitch. Or maybe brioche, I love the rhythm of that. So calming.

You're such an amazing knitter, I think you could go either way with your labor knitting project...more difficult, or easier. Either way, I think you're right and it will be a special project because of the memories associated with it. For me, I was working on a pair of cozy socks to be a Christmas gift for my father... I remember the exact yarn and needles I used and the quality of the sun shining in the window as I knit on them. I had a very long labor (24 hours) that ended in a c-section, much of the experience was a blur, but I remember the knitting! My dad passed away when my son was 4 years old, but he loved those socks and enjoyed wearing them for those years.

After my 2 kids, I recommend something simple that doesn't mind being thrown into its bag when things get serious and is washable. Practice contractions are annoying, but the real ones will take your breath away. During my first Labor and delivery stay, I could barely focus on simple stitches because there was constantly someone wanting to talk to me or a nurse taking my vitals. I couldn't knit at the time, so I was crocheting and almost lost my hook several times. Anything that required counting was so out of the question for me.

I vote for a simple project! You might have patience for something more complicated if you have a slow labor however if things move quickly you may not have much time to pick up your needles. You may also spend a lot of time up walking around and if you have something small and easy to carry and knit while you walk that could be nice too. You never know how your labor will go. Each person is different and each delivery can be very different. All three of my labor and deliveries were different and with different timelines. It will also depend if you are having a natural or medicated birth. All factors to consider. Once that precious bundle of joy is in your arms, you may not even think about your knitting for a while. I’m wishing you all the best for your birth. It has been a pleasure to watch your journey over the last few years and I’m so happy for you!! 🍼👶❤

Answering your question : definitely bring something simple because when in labour you need to concentrate on your breathing to minimize the pain during contractions and you can just simply pick up your knitting if you desire … you will probably not knit anyway … and enjoy the moment of the delivery with your husband! It is wonderful!!!

Hi Kika, Going into labour is so different for everyone and even the same person for their first, second or third child. With everything going on, you may not want to knit. But, if you do, maybe something simple might be the best like a baby blanket. It will be great because you always make beautiful things. I wish you the best with your delivery. You are such a lovely person and you have accomplished so much as a knitwear designer in such a short time. You should be incredibly proud of all you have done. You will be a wonderful mother. Enjoy your time with your new little one. Knit when you are up to it. Rest and look after yourself and your baby the rest of the time. Don't put pressure on yourself. Take care, Sharon.

Wow you really have the pregnant glow on you now, looking good girl! My first labour was over in 3 hours and far too intense to think of knitting. However even with the others no way could I even consider doing any, because the contractions are too painful, and the in-between contractions is just getting over each one and mentally preparing for the next, lol. Answer to your question: I'd keep the project simple because there is likely going to be lots of start-stopping and interruptions. I would also go for something you see progress in quickly to keep you motivated and that would work as a better distraction than something more complex, in my opinion. I am also 8 months pregnant and I'm planning a simple garter stitch cardigan for the baby so I don't even have to worry about purling and still feel the progress of rows

As a person who's been through two labours I can say it's a dynamic and somewhat unpredictable process. That's why I would definitely recommend something very simple, stockinette stitch only. It will take your mind off things in it's own meditative kind of way. The very fact that you wouldn't have to think about it will help your mind to relax by keeping your hands occupied. Once everything intensifies you will want to be able to just drop the project without having to remember where you were exactly

I always took my knitting with me to the hospital when I was in labor, and I always made sure it was something simple like a hat for me or the baby, or a very simple sock. You will not have a long time between contractions so you won’t be able to concentrate for long on anything that is complicated. Also, you want a project that is easy to put down quickly and then take up again after a contraction is over. I absolutely love your purple cardigan and I can’t wait to buy the pattern when you are done.

Oh that will be nice coming home. Your tummy will still be full for a while but with this, you'll have plenty of room - and you'll feel all warm and cozy. Can't wait to hear about your baby. Sending good vibes for a smooth delivery.

Love the colour of the cardigan! 😍It's so pretty. I just started my first project (a hat) using Merino/Kid-Silk mohair from Drops. My project was inspired by your many lovely and colourful hats. Good luck with the last few weeks of pregnancy.

This is the time to rest, and to continue resting whenever the baby sleeps after the birth! Your energy will come back if you don't push it. So many fun and beautiful projects to integrate around time for self-care and baby care.

Once i started labor, it took 36 hours. Best thing is to get rest in the very beginning. I didnt sleep at all the whole time and i was so exhausted by the time i had to push. Be well and take care of yourself. Once the baby comes, you may not have time for vlogging for awhile, but i wish you well.

Please Sweet Girl, don't plan on being "distracted" by anything during labor. Give full attention to your body and focus on relaxing and cooperating with your body. That is what the breathing is for. With every exhale, relax as much as possible. I firmly believe that most of the pain comes from resisting the process. Unless you plan on having pain blocking medication, then knit away. It's all good. I am very happy for you and hope we will get to see your little one. ~Renee

Keep the projects simple for the time around the birth and after. I think you are doing fabulous and I do not know where you get the energy. I remember how uncomfortable I was, when expecting my 2 girls .... 18 years ago.

When I was in labor( 4 times) each experience was different. Donna is right, keep it simple. Sometimes you just want to hold your husband's hand or not be touched. After the delivery you might just want to hold your baby. Be prepared to fall madly in love with your son. It is truly a magical time.

Something simple that can be picked up and put down with ease. Your labour could be long or short, there is just no telling. All I can say is, it is so worth it. When you arrive back home, take all the help offered and get as much sleep as you can.

Choose something simple where gauge doesn’t matter as much because your tension might end up all over the place, depending how things progress. Wishing you an easy labor!

Simple and small project. Something like a hat can be in your closet forever, even after you stop wearing it. My husband still has the T-shirt he was wearing: 37 years later!!!😊

Kika, Congratulations!! You're definitely doing amazing walking around especially in Snow! That extra element adds more concerted effort to both keep balance and to move forward. Definitely, the moods pop up and effect us while our bodies navigate growing a human. 🥰 Also, yes those early contractions are called Braxton Hicks, aka Pre-labor. Gradually, they will get closer, have a plan with your provider about what happens when. Bringing simple knitting, and activity tablet - crosswords, sudoku, word search. All will allow you distractions between in labor progress.

Hello Kika 👋🏼 To answer your question about what to knit during labour, I would definitely go with something simple. Once labour really gets going your body takes over and you may find that you aren’t able to concentrate on anything else. Good luck with your delivery, I hope everything goes smoothly for you. Sam xxx

By the time I got to the last week before I went into labor I couldn’t even look at yarn without feeling physically sick. I think it was the idea of sitting in one spot for an extended period of time but honestly I couldn’t tell you why that was. I personally required 110% of my brain during labor, I was focused on my breathing and movement when coping with the waves of discomfort. This was just my first time though, obviously as most of the comments explain.. every person and birth is different. Best wishes for your birthing journey! I love the work you do, and thank you for teaching me to make my first sweater(cinema sweater)❤

As stages of labour progresses, it is very unpredictable and out of your control. I would highly suggest a simple project that will make you smile, for example, a baby beanie or blanket. It’s so sweet waiting for your bundle of joy to enter this world and then to cover your bub with warmth and love ❤❤❤

Hejja dig! I gave birth to my daughter 3years ago and she didn't feel like coming out on time, so i was induced, and it was pretty chill at first I don't really remember to be honest what we did in the hospital. I think it started to hurt and I just sat and focused on pain management. Then I had the epidural and life was bareable again, i think i fell asleep, much needed rest and then it was time to have the baby. So time goes quickly and slowly at the same time. I was definately happy that I was so much in the moment, working with the nurses and the amazing people at the hospital just filled me with such gratitude. So, my one advice is probably is to be in the moment as much as possible, its a huge endevour having your first child, and take pictures I'd say, because you forget everything and it good to go back and process it, because I don't want to scare you, but its a crazy thing childbirth. But easily the coolest thing I've ever done in my entire life. I'm really happy I got to experience it. I wish you the best of luck!!

I have had four pregnancies/babies. Each was different. But fairly quick. You never know how it will go and if you’ll have the energy. My advise is to give yourself options for all eventualities. I had calming music on headphones (a playlist I made for myself) and practised hypno birthing which I can highly recommend. I love watching your vlogs with my two youngest girls. They have loved seeing your bump grow. 💙

What a lovely way to spend your last weeks of pregnancy, knitting. Lol. I remember plowing through snow in the middle of winter when pregnant. It didn't do me well to do that. Please do take time to rest and don't push yourself too hard. Relax! You're a mom to be! Last 7 weeks are important. Cheers and blessings to you both. KIKA.

For my Labour I brought a Medium Skill Projekt with me. A simple sweater with stockinet but also with some cables that keeps me entertained at the beginning when the contractions are not that strong. as they get stronger and stronger I reccomend a simple stitch. so maye this two stitches would be a good option. :)

Ive only had 1 baby, and I was so excited to finally get to the Maternity Ward in labour. I had a very simple shawl cast on and ready to go for the moment, expecting that I would get bored or have time to rest. But, I had to be induced and spent almost 2 days in very intensive labour. After my son was born, I was so utterly exhausted that I only did a few rows over the next 4 days. It was the most intense experience of my life!

Definitely something simple! You just never know how it's all going to go, and once it is all on, it's all on! Knitting you might need to just drop it. Try to get as much rest/sleep as you can. My boys arrived with 5 hrs each...

I’m also 8 months pregnant ( with my 3rd) and a knitter! I’ve been thinking about my labor projects too 😂 so I totally get it. I haven’t figured mine out yet but I’ll be going to simple in the round stockinette. I even have a few shirts and sweaters where I have the yokes done and sleeves split so I can simply knit on the body of those during labor. I’m so happy for you!❤

Hello 😊 last year, it was one of your design that came with me in my hospital bag ! For your question, I would say a simple Knitting. Each labor is différent from one woman to another, but it’s important to keep in mind that you Will be ask permanently how you feel, perform some medical exam… and the contractions can feel really manageable as hurting unexpectidly ! ☺️ You seem really radiant at 8 months !! I send you good vibes from France 😘
