Another oorail.com Loco Works Wednesday video, this week I show you how to quarter a steam locomotive. 67610 is a Class V1 locomotive from Bachmann, this is the older version with the split chassis. When 67610 arrived at oorail, the wheels were binding, and the front driving wheel was dislodged from the chassis. A perfect opportunity to show folks how to quarter (offset by roughly 90 degrees) a OO gauge steam locomotive. The right hand side is usually leading for British Locomotives....

I realize this vid is from 7 yrs ago, but wanted to say thanks very much for the great content; I was able to get a bachmann 0-6-0 from the 1970s running by quartering the drivers (and completely taking apart, servicing and reassembling the pancake motor). Couldn't have done it without you! I just wanted to see it run again! Very satisfying to get it going!

Thank you once again for taking the time to reply to my comments. Alot of what you and I do is really basic stuff however, I have found over the years that people decide that its too difficult and do not even attempt repairs or even basic maintenance. This is where videos such as yours come into play. If you can tempt people to at least have a go they will gain both confidence and a fatter wallet.😊 You will know that the biggest part of a bill is not the parts required but the labour charge. As I have already mentioned you need to hold peoples hands and guide them step by step, sad really when you think about it. Its up to people like yourself to show modelers the "can do" attitude and dispel the "can't even try " attitude which seems to haunt our society these days. Keep on making your videos, you will make a difference even if you never hear about it. Sorry for the spelling mistakes in my last comments, the main reason I retired from doing what I loved, eyesight no longer up to par😢. Good Modelling. 😊

I am experiencing some wheel wobble on my new flying scotsman. Nothing major I'm just ocd about it and thought it needed quartering but I guess it doesn't. I see its 90° offset already. Thanks for explaining what quartering is.

DJMixFlow93 Flying Scotsman is a three cylinder loco, and so the side connecting rods should be at 120 degrees, not 90. Key thing is that the side rods are not near 180 degrees...

Do you ever run your locos SLOW? Seems difficult to actually "tune" the valve gear, when you only run WIDE OPEN!

Absolutely, all the time. Found though with how-to videos over the years that a lot of people just want to see that it worked, so if your run the loco a little quicker, shortens the segment time and they keep watching :)

What a very uninformative video. Whats the point in the whole thing when you speed up the most important bit. I am no wiser at all?
@Oorail
@Oorail 5 жыл бұрын
The point is to leverage the KZbin speed option in the viewer. Click on the "cog", it might be a "cog with HD" written on it. Select speed, then select 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75, depending on your preference. You will likely want to hit the mute button as it will distort the audio. The point of doing it this way is that at normal speed people can see whats happening but it doesn't take 30+ minutes. If someone wants to see it at a slower speed, like you, you have much better control with the 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 speeds with it sped up at normal speed. Without it sped up like that, the 0.25 setting really is too slow to be of any use. This way, you can watch it at 0.25. This is the reason why there is music and no informative speech during it either. This video is about 3 years old, but I'm pretty sure I walked through what was going to happen in the segment before it was sped up too. So hopefully now you are a bit wiser about both using the KZbin player and quartering a loco. If not, perhaps this isn't for you and you should send your loco off for repairs?

Hi again. Thanks for the reply it is nice of you to take the time. I get the whole principal but I am still puzzled. LEFT or RIGHT SIDE. Is left the left side that you see just before you are run over bby a train or is it the left side if you are driving the train? Andy
@Oorail
@Oorail 5 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. It is just like the left-hand and right-hand drive with a car. Trains in the UK are left-hand running.
@burtonfootballer5408
@burtonfootballer5408 5 жыл бұрын
So which classed as the left side? Is it the left as if you were driving the train and standing or sitting in the cab it OR is it the left that you would see as if the train was coming right at you? Andy
@Oorail
@Oorail 5 жыл бұрын
I already answered this question with my previous comment. If you are driving a left hand drive car, with the steering wheel on the left side, you are sitting on the left hand side of the car. Trains are the same way. In the UK the driver's seat is on the left hand side, and the trains are left hand running (run on the left track in a double track setup). The drivers sit on the left hand side because the signals are on the left hand side of the track etc. LNER I think was right hand drive, possibly a few others.

By the way, if you're REALLY going to try to check and adjust the quartering of a steam engine, you must have a quartering jig/ tool to do it accurately. A company called "North West Shortline" sells such a device. This stuff about running locomotive nearly wide open serves no purpose...

If you want to view the sped up parts in real-time, click the "cog/gear" button with "HD" stamped on it in the KZbin viewer, select speed, and select 0.5 or 0.25. If you are viewing it on a tablet or mobile device, click the video, hit the vertical three dots in the upper right, and then select "Playback Speed" and adjust it from Normal to a slower setting. The earlier how-to videos did these parts in real time, and people were complaining that the videos were too long, that they didn't want to sit through watching the whole process, etc. I thought this was a good compromise, in that the video was shorter, people could get a gist of the process watching it sped up and if they wanted to watch it in more detail, the KZbin viewer supports slowing the video down. I guess for future videos, I am going to have to edit two separate versions to keep everyone happy! :) As for the music, its from the KZbin Audio Library, but looking at my audience demographics, it probably wasn't the best choice, I'll pick something more suitable in the future.

Interesting, but surely since the model is not really being piston driven, quartering is purely for aesthetics right? Isn't it more likely that the wheels were jamming because the valve gear was all wrong?
@Oorail
@Oorail 8 жыл бұрын
nope... it doesn't have to be perfectly quartered but they are designed to be offset. If they are not offset they will bind...
@tomlawton7087
@tomlawton7087 7 жыл бұрын
oorail.com It's worth emphasising that typically only one axle is driven by the motor (actually like most prototype locos) and so the quartering is still important to ensure the other axles can be rotated by one connecting rod which should not be in line with the axle.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comments. There is no indication on your video as to what level of skills you need to complete what you are demonstrating and just as importantly no series number. I do not doubt your skills but not having a Series number ( ie series 1 part 4 ) makes viewers, not lazy but simple not mind readers. You may wish to consider some sort of numbering system for future videos. You know, sometimes your critics may have a point worth considering, don't take criticism so personal. As for sending my locomotives away to be repaired just in case I botch the job. Well you may have a point here, my eyesight is not what it was. I have just retired at the age of 72 having spent 51 years professionally repairing most of the Locos made by many of the companies around during this period and some who alas are no more. Happy modeling ☺

You are most welcome. Thats not a bad idea actually, maybe I need to put some kind of graphic at the start of the video to indicate the intended skill level of the audience, although that might cause some folks to think the video is beyond them without watching it first. I think you may misunderstand the purpose of Loco Works Wednesday, something I need to actually bring back as its been awhile. The purpose of the Wednesday videos were to overhaul / repair / enhance locos, these were somewhat random, more of a tackle the problem at hand sort of thing. There are a number of howto videos that deal with the basics that someone would need before tackling this kind of project. Sometimes folks just don't know how to use KZbin correctly though, I don't think its necessary to number or group things into series, when the playlist feature does it quite gracefully - kzbin.infoplaylists I do have one question for you though, if you've spent so long professionally repairing locos, why are you complaining about missing basic information? If anything, having repaired locos for that long professionally, some things would be second nature to you at this point? I know that some folks on KZbin don't appreciate the repair videos because they feel it takes away from their business?

I have to agree with the majority of comments. Why speed through the important parts? I watched this to learn.
@Oorail
@Oorail 2 жыл бұрын
There is an option in the KZbin player that allows you to adjust the speed. If you watch the video, I explain what I am about to do, then it speeds through it to allow the viewer to select what speed they want to watch it at. This video is a few years old, at the time I filmed it people were complaining the videos were too long because they were being filmed in real-time. Quartering can be tricky to do, this video was part of the Loco Works Wednesday series where I just filmed stuff I was doing on my workbench. I'll see if I can do a proper how-to video since a lot of folks were having problems with the speed controls in the player!

the easier way would of been to take the bottom plate off and remove the whole wheel assembly then quater the wheels by just spinning the wheels on the axles. this video is a waste of time in both watching and requatering
@Oorail
@Oorail 7 жыл бұрын
Its a split chassis loco, so you can't drop the wheel assembly from the bottom plate like you can on Hornby locos. You would have to take the chassis apart completely and that is a lot more work than simply quartering the wheels like I did in the video. Also for this particular loco, the wheel assembly was incorrectly quartered and the rods were in the wrong position, so you couldn't just spin the wheels on the axles.

The Chinese made locos seem to be somewhat lacking in Quality Control that is for sure. Since I order most of my locos from either the UK or Canada, its not really worth the cost of shipping things back if there is a problem, have to sort of fix it myself. I have a Heljan Class 26 (brand new) that has a few buffer beam issues and I fixed a few Hornby locos with minor things, like loose parts. I think 3D printing will change the hobby over the coming years... hence why I picked up some 3D printers :)

Oh dear, a good intention but not an instructional video. I was looking to find out how to 1/4 my old Hornby Princess Elizabeth loco. Interesting for a few moments, then we go to time lapse along with some dreadful music(?) Hands flying everywhere, good views of the back of the right hand, not so of the loco. OK, slowed it down, the music(?) degenerated to the sound of a coffee grinder burning out its motor. The voice, when it came on sounded like someone was terminally ill. Now, I'm no Oscar winning film director, however I would suggest the following. Reshoot the video at normal speeds, no music, not even Beethoven's 9th, overhead camera or frontal position, more use than seeing the backs of hands. Clear audio which can be heard, the use of a pointer, a yellow pencil works well, instead of a finger blocking the point of interest. A little rehearsal, with the camera running might be useful too. Run the video, ask yourself "Would this help me to fix the problem?"
@Oorail
@Oorail 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Chris. You probably want to mute the video if you slow it down to watch certain parts. Quartering is pretty easy, the purpose of the Loco Works Wednesday videos are just showing people stuff I am doing on my workbench, sort of looking over my shoulder so to speak rather than a formal tutorial. Good luck quartering your loco, it takes patience but like I said is very easy. The reason it was sped up in the first place is that you don't need to see the entire process, you basically just adjust and readjust, whats important is the offset between the two sides at the end. Unfortunately, that seems to have eluded some of the people who commented... including yourself. :)

Use the speed control in the KZbin player to slow it down, hit the settings cog, then playback speed, then 0.75 (3/4), 0.5 (1/2) or 0.25 (1/4) depending on what speed you need, and hit mute. I explain in the video whats being done before and after it happens. People only comment when they are moaning, about 75% of the folks like this video and about 25% moan. My guess is that the 25% probably aren't that tech savvy. This video isn't intended as a how-to, its part of Loco Works Wednesday which is a series where you get to see stuff I'm doing on my workbench. I might do an actual how-to video on this and link it because I'm getting tired of having to tell people how to use KZbin properly :)

Sorry this was a total waste of time firstly why did you not take a photo of the valve gear before you dismantled it then you could have compared it with the photo. You also said viewers were saying it was to long well make two parts to it as speeding it up was a total cock up don't think much of it
@Oorail
@Oorail 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy Russell. Thank you for taking the time to leave some feedback. The reason I didn't take a photo of the valve gear before I dismantled it was due to the fact that the locomotive wasn't moving correctly because the valve gear was out of quarter, hence the reason for the video. As for the format of the video, the oorail project is on KZbin to share things with other people interested in model railways. I'm sorry you feel like you didn't get anything out of the video. This particular video is several years old and I was experimenting with an idea at the time to try to keep both those who wanted a shorter video and those who wanted to see everything in detail. Your suggestion of two videos wouldn't have kept the first group happy as they wanted to see things sped up, they wanted to see the process without having to watch an hour long video, even though the process is a bit time consuming. If you want to see the thing in detail, all you have to do is select "playback speed" in your KZbin player and reduce it below 1. The only "total cock up" was not making that more obvious to viewers in the video, I made the assumption most people could figure that out.

@@andyrussell7506 I wouldn't get too far ahead of yourself, the folks with the same frame of mind as yourself can't operate the playback speed and mute option in the KZbin player. That is just eight people out of 19296 who watched the video having an issue with the speed, and four (one guy twice) having an issue with my choice of music. I took a quick look at your videos, you have less than 10 views on most of your videos, the highest viewed one is 209, at least one of those is you and one of those is me, so probably not getting the audience to generate complaints yet! This video is also almost 5 years old, the channel has come a long way since.. :)
