I would Dremel out with burring tool the casting near the motor connections, giving a greater clearance so no dead shorts occurs, but all in all a great video, my old class 04 ( NOS ) will be next for this conversion...NB, try a countersunk screw in the chassis for soldering...

A much needed video. For your other 04 loco why not do a total rechassis by using a chassis kit from Branchline trains. Then DCC that one.

Nice result Jenny, you are v brave IMO doing this live infront of a camera, it would stress me out 😏 I hv 3x Bachmann V3s to do with SC's I bought from Rails on release, so trawling through a few vids on YT to gather info. Soldering isnt my strength either so I use a maglamp as its a big help to check no solder crosses over on those pads. Cheers

Some metals i couldn't solder to either. I wound up drilling and tapping them and screwing wires to them.

Have several split chassis locos. A number of mainline models have the split chassis design. Panniers ( up to around 2005 or so) and lord Nelson from bachmann have the split chassis.

I have a split chasis that is even harder to convert to DCC, a US 4 8 4 steamer with the motor being an internal part of the frame. Very nice loco but very old and also the axles are plastic and all broken. I will most probably end up as a round house queen.

CV29 set to 10. Maybe you could be more specific on this as I set my CV29s to disable DC running and have had to also set it to reverse the loco in some cases, After a time I found that some Hornby DCC fitted chips decided to make the motor run in the wrong direction. I've been setting CV29 to a value of 43 when I've had to reverse the polarity to the motor. NO, it wasn't wired wrongly in the first place, this has happened when left in cold storage, when the loft has got cold. I have only had Hornby decoders do this. I've also had Hornby decoders totally die on me as well.

Sam Barr the reason for setting CV29 is because the SPP won’t work if DC running is enabled.

Is there a CV for doing an auto tune of the back emf, for example ESU decoders use CV 54 to 0 then press F1 to do an auto tune.

I tried this a few years ago. It worked perfectly. But, i made the mistake of buying Hattons decoders. I had three in the end, and all three blew up the last one killed my class 03 motor outright.

I'm sorry, but don't waste you're money, time and effort. With the split axles, once the quartering goes, and it usually does especially on Mainline/Palitoy locos, they'll never run nicely again, you always get a slight wobble.

David Watts on old ones that can be a problem but some do seem to last. This 04 I used was in really good condition and represents the final releases from Bachmann. The decoder and SPP can be removed and moved to a different loco at a layer date quite easily should the need arise, so aren’t wasted.

@@JenniferEKirk Not had much to do with Bachmann split chassis, but certainly Mainline ones are getting terrible. After all they are 40 years old now. I've had at least 4 fail on me in the last year all with the axles slipping and coming apart especially on the drive axle. Which is a shame because they were really nice locos for the time.
