Fun fact: The reason why you see Tony getting Burger King right after coming home is because RDJ was a big druggie right up until Iron Man, and was actually driving with a bunch of drugs in his car, when he got hungry and stopped at a Burger King. Reportedly, the burger was so bad that it made him question his life choices and immediately dump all his drugs into a nearby water source, get into rehab, and then later became Iron Man, and he wanted the Burger King recognition for basically saving his life, and his career.

I didn't grow up watching Marvel, but when Iron man 1 came out, I found it strangely engrossing, but lost all interest after Iron man 2. Subaru actually opened my eyes to what changed. They really did cut out most not safe for kids parts in subsequent movies. Iron man 1 torture part wasn't notably violent, but it helps connect the character struggle, Stark facing the consequence of his own action violently. Then there's also the people in a room talking. Avenger was a serious case of this. Iron man 1 tried to limit those scenes as much as possible, as well as adding more spices around them, such as Stane revealing to Tony about the weapons took place in front of the press. This helps the movie flows, something later movies in the series struggle to do. I've heard this is due to Marvel planned the action scenes first, then the talking is inserted later by the director.

I'd like to add too about Edward Norton's inputs on a Hulk not classical, but still melancholic Bruce Banner, not being able to do things that he wanted and opened a path for the character to control the anger, Hulk itself towards the end of the movie. Idk what happened to that progression, either scrapped or retconned in the Avengers 1 movie. Then later on ruined by Taika, and became a comic relief for the two grandest Avengers movies. Whedon at leadt did good for Banner in AoU.

There’s no internal conflict, and Tony never hesitates to kill the man who raised him. Like, the father/son dynamic later becomes SO important to Tony’s character, yet Obadiah is such a shallow character, that the MCU never even bothers to mention him again, especially not under the context that Tony might have even viewed him as more of a father than his actual dad, since his relationship with Howard was very strained, even after he’d found out that his Dad viewed him as his greatest creation, and that Winter Soldier had killed him. And that’s why Obadiah doesn’t make sense. There’s a massive pool of depth just sitting there, waiting to be tapped into, but neither Iron Man 1, nor the rest of the MCU, ever acknowledges that it was even there.

Like there was a really interesting father/son dynamic to explore there, which was a really big missed opportunity, especially since fatherhood and what it meant, was later explained to be a major part of Tony’s character.

I love Iron Man. It's still easily one of the best if not the best Marvel movie and one of the best superhero movies ever made. I wonder if Subaru has ever played the Wii game that they made for it. one of only 4 that I can re-watch (guardians1 lasted 2 watches the third was a struggle, thor1 for the character acting, strange for the interesting adaptation of the far better/weirder source material) and the ONLY one that I have watched more than 3 times. The others have clip-worthy moments (e.g. yondu vs ship full of mutineers) but I have no need to rewatch the whole thing, due to the marvel formula generating a lot of expositional downtime.

Even after so many years this is still one of my favorite films in the MCU. It’s honestly how small the final fight was, it was personal and had major stakes for the MCU, but still didn’t try to make everything a spectacle. Everything felt so real, how Iron mans first suit got stuck on the wall, the multiple upgrades he made till he perfected, how they froze after going so high and their suits are malfunctioning. I know most MCU actors are in good shape, but their characters all feel like they got to where they are without ever lifting a finger. Also while it was quirky it didn’t stop to laugh at itself like some of the modern films do.
