I love how the OP-1 looks and works...but a 1K for such tiny device was always a no-no to me. That's more than what a full size Headrush Pedalboard costs.

I was THINKING, about buying one of these used. Before they stopped making them, replaced the screen and then jacked up the prices to the same as Ebay scalpers, after they released a press statement saying that no one should have to pay those prices for an OP-1.

When the price was released on the first gen version.., there was one MASSIVE and global response of “Whaaa da fuc” and it reverberated to the moon and back. The same price will get you an MPC Live 2 that can do as much and then some, sounds better but most importantly, actually looks like a 1200 dollar device. And it is the latter that has always rubbed me the wrong way with the OP-1: You just can't help but feel cheated for spending that much on a toy-like device.

This is the BEAT THANG of it's time. It just became a lot more popular and was marketed better. In Canada the OP-1 goes for $1400+tax. Used from $800-1000. Maybe in another 10 years I'll think about buying when they're $300 used and no one wants them anymore.

Great video. I've had the Op-1 since the end of 2014. Def better than people think. Started my production career on the best foot possible. Got the mpc one and now both devices make up the whole of my studio, plus a midi keyboard.

me 2, do you use the midi the quantize the op-1 then transfer each track thru audio track by track or do you record yours loops into the mpc. i hook up my op-1 disk mode into the mpc and transfer to avoid that noise bullshit that you hear thru the audio outs
@robertgordonii5325
@robertgordonii5325 2 жыл бұрын
Op1 is for melodies when paired with the mpc. Manipulating sound on it after 5years makes it effortless to create a nice soundscape. I like how the op1 makes beats by itself, the end result sound i get so im still making beats str8 on that, especially more lofi sounds, or classic hip hop shit. Not having quantize sucked, especially in the beginning, that was my biggest learning curve, but now not so much. I take off quantize sometimes on the mpc just to humanize my drums, shout out to Dilla. Next level will be to create orginal sounds on the op1, then sample into the mpc to chop and layer drums. Midi controller for the mpc synth engines, especially the new joints...
@robertgordonii5325
@robertgordonii5325 2 жыл бұрын
Im still working on the fuzz, but a second end result will be to sample finished beats back into the op1 from the mpc to get the effect i get off a finished op1 beat with mpc processesing, light, major or none at all. The future is endless...

Haha. Great video. You had me laughing pretty good on this one, lol. One interesting thing about the OP-1 is when I see a picture of it by itself in a sales ad, I got the impression it was about the size of a smartphone or maybe just a tad larger. In other words, I thought it was small enough to fit in your pocket.. Now, when I actually saw the guy holding one in his hand in this video, I was quite surprised at how large it really is, much bigger than I suspected. Now, I wanna guess it is about the size of a Roland TB303, much too large to fit into your pocket!!!

The Op-1 is the only device i've been going back and forth between selling and keeping it this much. Every time i think of what i could get gearwise when i sell it. But then i play around with it, have fun, make something dope and then be like 'yeah let me hold on to it for a bit longer'. It's got everything but is lacking everything at the same time. Only a few fx are actually usable (punch for example is pretty useless, its not a compressor, more like a bass filter/distortion with some compression going on), the sampler misses key features (ADSR is missing, on a drum sampler, yeah...) and i could go on. But... it does EVERYTHING differently from any other device or plugin. Its so unique that when you are up for a challenge and a puzzle while also creating something cool, its unmatched. And i get the price thing, but when you have it in your hands, its absolutely not a toy. It's as premium as it can be. So the 'love/hate' thing is the most accurate assesment of the OP-1, even for owners of it, you constantly go from hate to love, sometimes in one session lol.

@@DyReckProductions and don’t forget only the master mix is stereo lol. 4 mono tracks… it has its own charm but is very limiting. It also misses some features and tricks you could do with an actual 4track tapedeck. But man is it a fast device once the muscle memory kicks in. How are TMNT and Teenage Engineering even connected? Ok, now I've finished watching this I get the OP-1 a bit more. Its a great little machine and really the small size is one of its best features! Two octave keyboards can be a bit limiting, but they could'nt fit a five octave one on it! Still, I'm a cheapskate and am enjoying my Korg Nanostudio Keys and iPad, which has some sick Apps on it these days!
