I love the Ascona videos, it's pure nostalgia for me. When I was around 7 or 8, they were everywhere. Literally both our neighbours had an Ascona, and so did my parents best friends. Now I haven't seen one in years, except in your videos. I'd probably turn my head faster at one of these than if a Bugatti drove by. Hoping for a Ford Sierra in your garage one day too, the cars of my childhood!

They were brilliant cars! Called Cavaliers in the UK. A relative had a 1.8 Sri which was fast in those days

My Dad had one of these as a 1.6 Cavalier, he loved the Varajet II and the auto choke. Thank you for doing a proper repair and not doing the caveman manual choke conversion or a bolt-on Weber.

Good fix! Auto choke similar to the one used on VW Beetles and Transporters from the early 60's. On single barrel carb though. Work fine if set up.

I had a polo classic with auto choke, no of the local mechanics could sort it, of course after I got rid I found a tuner who’s speciality was fitted manual chokes, great video

Thanks for opel sound extravaganza! 😆. Love my opel astra f. Such a reliable car with "modern" EFI which turns 30 years this year!

You can possibly improve the throttle feel by taking a bit of slack out of the cable. It looks a bit loose there. Spoken as a 10 year 3 cars owner of 1.6l Cavalier estates.

A great explanation of how that works. I learnt something today- thank you

Garage is looking tidy👍🏼👍🏼 Good fix, it was called the Vauxhall Cavalier here in the uk, battled it out with the Sierra to be the ultimate rep mobile!!

Really like the revival videos🙂. Something I would like to do myself, but I am already deep into it with multiple projects going in parallell 😅. Watching you revive this takes the worst edge off it 🙂. I like old opels and especially the Vectra a, but the later models from that one just don't do the same for me. If you did a kadett gsi revival, you would have me glued 😅. Happy I discovered your youtube channel a few months ago, I really enjoy what you do 🙂👍

My step dad had the same issues with his old Ascona. The carburetor kept leaking and over flooding was very easy.

I had a Weber 2 barrel progressive on a sandrail (VW air-cooled) that worked exactly like this! I never got it working right so I'd just hold the throttle for the first minute or so

I had 1981 JB Holden Camira in the 80s, which (i think) is essentially the same car, the carb looks familiar. The element in the choke failed so I fitted a manual choke, I don't recall exactly where I attached it, but it worked fine.

Mine was 1983, with a 16SH 66kw 90hp engine and it had a manual choke, just below the light switch. My problem was with the needle in the carburetor, it kept breaking.

My Father had the Vauxhall version in the UK 8nthe eighties. It was a very nice car. He had the choke converted to manual. A very common thing in the day. Nice to see this car still going strong.

I had the exact same linkage problem with my piano's mute pedal...

Automatic chokes were a great selling point, for people offering kits to replace them with manual ones that is... :P
@Rich13-6013 сағат бұрын
Good repair, there used to be a popular mod in the 70's and into the 80's whereby you fitted a manual conversion kit instead of the automatic system, a lot of them used to fail it seems, lol.

Love these fix it videos 👍! Back in the day,I had two Cavaliers - a 1.6GL followed, when the opportunity arose, by a 1.8iCD. Previous to that I owned a Granada 2.8GL for many years, with the FoMoCo automatic choke set up - which never worked properly. This one had a twin Webber manual choke installed - it transformed the car for the better - and not just for cold start up!

Not just this particular vehicle, I have never seen an automatic choke system work properly. If something is "automatic", it is unnecessary. Is it really that hard to pull the manual choke lever and then push it back in a minute later?

The Ford Taunus 1.6 had a similar auto-choke. The bi-metallic spring was not heated by electric power but by a pocket of coolant The hotter the coolant, the less choke on the carb. But these were a pig to adjust correctly. I prefer a manual choke.
