I opened our locked bedroom at midnight. Thank you so much for this video. You explained very well. It would have been very difficult during lockdown due to corona pandemic here in India to find someone to open the lock. A tip- USE A THIN BUT STIFF SHEET OF PLASTIC. I used a piece from empty fruits container. I found card to thick to pass through the gap. Hope someone else finds it useful in crisis.

The washroom privacy locks have a small hole in the knob into which you can stick a narrow stick such as a needle, a Bobby pin or the wire from wire hangars into to release the latch and indeed, the lock kit includes a tool for this which many builders just leave on the molding above the door. There really no reason to go such extremes to get through a privacy lock and as the video says, if the mount plate had been installed properly, the card trick wouldn't work. Now moving the plate often requires you to fill the drill holes with glue and sawdust or premanufactured wood filler so you can drill the holes in the proper locations. If mounted a bit too tight, you can file the plate, it's better to start off tight and file to fit but don't over file.

Needless to say, I get comfortable when I go home to eat lunch and to keep from staining my clothing so I take some off and low and behold, there was no knock on the door, and suddenly my door opened and I grabbed a throw to cover up my underclothing and ask what the heck are you doing? It was one of the maintenance men who worked at the complex who then made up a story about getting a call to check the heating system or something to that nature and I lived alone. This happened another time when I had a roommate who worked a different shift than me which means she slept during the day while I was away and she woke up to a man entering the bedroom and scared The Living Daylights out of him because he did not expect anyone to be there. Again, a maintenance man who worked for the apartment complex. What either of these guys was going to be looking for or how many times this had been done when neither of us was there, I don't know.

I had a brand new house built and the far quits installed the dead-locks *and* the normal pathetic doorknob/locks incorrectly. Three external door and all the locks (6 of them) were done wrong. One dead-lock was screw/torqued up so tight that the bolt would not slide when the key was used. Really annoying when the new building cost a little over $250,000 just over 27 years ago. I was also stunned when the windows arrived with plastic locks on them. *Thank you* for this video. It taught me something that I didn't know so it is greatly appreciated.

Also be aware of weather stripping on outside doors. Sometimes if you pull doors that have weather stripping you can get the little pin to pop out because weather stripping has give. Great if your worried about getting locked out but kind of defeats the point of the lock. Maybe if there is a harder stop near the lock you can mitigate it but I'm not a pro, just someone who played around with their door as a kid.

But then once that is done, we won't be able to let ourselves in but you're not likely to lock yourself out with a double deadbolt lock since you need the key for that.

Many years ago, a little while after my family moved into a new (to us) house we found some fresh scrapes from where someone had tried to jimmy the back door open. It just had a latch. My parents called a locksmith who installed a deadbolt. No problems with that since then. FWIW the front door already had a deadbolt built in.

I've always thought the dead lock plunger is a bad design. Doors shift and sag and striker plates wear pretty quickly, and the plunger requires a tight tolerance to function correctly. That's the reason they often don't work correctly. There are other designs that are less common but much more reliable.

You reminded me of one other incident involving my great aunt who had dementia who locked her bedroom door and then did not respond to a knock or anything. We were going to let it go until she came out but then it occurred to her that she might have been sick so biggie me, a woman, decided I could do what I had seen on TV and that was to kick the door in. Nearly broke my leg. Then I call the police for help and they suggested the fire department and sent the fire department who came without credit cards and took the whole frame from around the door to remove the door but they did put it back up leaving a little bit of damage. She was Dazed and was not even aware that we were there but did not need any medical care. Wonder why fireman were not taught the credit card trick. Wish I had known that then, we would have gotten in a lot more quickly. We eventually just change the door knob to one that does not lock since it was an interior door so she could not lock it at all. We think that she thought it was the front door to her house.

I assumed it was because I used to dance and that was my turn leg. The doctor said to not wear cute shoes to work and that I should wear walking shoes or running shoes since I walk a lot at work. Well, that did the trick! My great aunt never did that again but she has since passed away! Thank you for your concern!😊

@@sable7114 I have heard that sometimes a person who needs to be 'detained' in their room for safety-medical reasons (Dementia wandering, sleepwalking, toddler) so maybe the doorknobs can be reversed so the lock is on the outside for their safety. Some caregivers will not wake up in the early hours to prevent someone roaming around the house unsafely. I'd be sure to have a monitor in the room with them though.

@@islandgal500 that is a good idea but I have one that's probably a lot less time consuming and costly since handyman never show up when they say they will. My mother also developed a type of dementia after a severe illness that cause lack of oxygen to her brain more than once and what I did was put actually impression mix into the opening of the door where the bolt lock would go into that hole and because that never engaged, she could lock the door if she wanted to which she loved to do whenever she went into the bathroom but the two would never engage and all I had to do was Push the door to open it. Since most people don't have impression mix, I guess you could probably use Clear caulking or something of that nature and I used clear because she could not tell that there was something in that opening.

For those that indicated a locked interior door, the only ones in my house that lock are the bathroom, and a nail pushed into the hole unlocks it. My house was built in the 60's. Now I have to find information on adjusting the striker plate. The deadbolt fix was pretty easy with a drill.

I noticed that my door had a larger gap at the bottom right than the top, causing the latch to go in at an angle, plus barely catching the striker plate. I loosened all three hinges, into the frame, put a spacer at the bottom hinge, between the hinge and frame, then snugged all of them down. It pushed the bottom of the door over enough that the latch was a different angle, and the door spacing was more even. I was amazed how small a spacer it took, it only needed to be at one hinge, and, how even the spacing became. @@stephaniecallaway8788
