Open All Hours
Season One, Episode Four - 12 Mar. 1976
When a crime wave hits the area Arkwright decides to scare off any potential burglars by putting up a notice that says Beware of the Dog but, since everybody knows that he has no dog, he goes out to borrow one for the weekend from the local kennels. Sadly it is better at scaring off customers than burglars.

🇬🇧 In my youth in the early to late 1960s we used to have a most wonderful village shop! They had a tiny post office in one of the corners and apart from regular groceries in which butter was sold from a great barrelled chunk, & your bit was cut off, weighed then wrapped in greaseproof paper & closed with a sticker with the shop name on it. Tea was scooped from a big wooden chest into special silver paper packets. They sold balls of knitting wool, patterns & knitting needles Magazines & newspapers Cords of wood, tools, gardening supplies, first aid items, greetings cards, art materials paint pots, paint brushes, animal feed, bags of hay, huge bags of potatoes, & out the front of the shop, like Arkwrights, tresle tables with fruit & veg, a stand full of fesh flowers, mops, buckets, coal skuttles, shovels Brush & pan sets. They even sold ( on occasion) cellophane packs of stripey sheets & pillow cases, tablecloths Cushion covers, tea towels & big yellow dusters. Then there were toys, many handmade by the local carpenter & they were wonderful & beautifully painted in bright colours, cards of buttons, zips Thread & needle kits, stationery A limited supply of reading books which were mainly romantic bodice rippers or lonely hearts novels!! The shelves of huge jars of sweets used to keep the kids mesmerized for ages, deciding which sweets to chose! It would take me an hour to list all the types of sweets but i always loved the bags of rainbow drops, Coloured sherbet, spearmint chews, nutty brittle, cinder toffee & liquorice allsorts. Im seeing the whole shop in my mind as i write this & the memories are as clear as a bell I can remember going in with my one shilling pocket money & buying tins of floral talcuum powder, a few bags of fruity chews - fruit salads, refresher chews & black jacks! Maybe a comic or a girl comic like the Beano & the Topper, as i grew older it was the Bunty & The Judy, later it would be Jackie magazine with posters of pop stars in it and the Petticoat mag with fashions & beauty tips!! I also remember the WONDERFUL smell in the shop, it was a mix of a sweet vanilla pipe tobacco, floor polish, wood & lemony pine I dont think there was anything That the shop Didnt sell! Oh yes & shelves full of pop/soda, Dandelion & Burdock was my favourite! Then id buy a bag of sherbet & 2 boiled fruit lollies to dip into my sherbet. I also remember they managed to squeeze in a cosmetics stand It was Rimmel & all the young girls & teenagers went nuts buying lipsticks & eyeshadows. I even remember buying my 1st lipstick it was a silvery pink called " Sugar Ice" & it cost me 1/11 or 1 shilling & 11 old pennies I hid it in my dressing table draw & used to sneak it out ( because I was just 11 or 12yrs & not allowed to wear make up) when i called for my best friend & we both smothered it on, ( probably looking as if we had consumption) we'd just wander up & down the streets & lanes passing the lads standing on the Corners. We thought we were the Bees Knees! Lol, my friend had a bottle of hairspray which we'd spray on our backcombed hair until it had the hold of a motorbike helmet so stiff was our hair do! We must have ponged like a hoard of demons! As well as the astringent smell of the hair spray we also splashed a perfume called Evening in Paris, or White Fire, they were the most popular fragrances of the time Ahh such sweet & happy memories, things were so much simpler then, uncomplicated. There was never any vandalism or fighting, no drug taking except for quick smokes behind the sports pavilion in the park. People left their doors unlocked Burgularies were unheard of, everyone looked out for each other & the old folks sat on the front steps keeping an eye on the little ones, all of us kids were safe then. Im so privileged to have had a childhood & early teens in our village, they really were golden years. Anyway, if you've reached this far i hope you enjoyed my wee jaunt down nemory lane Regards 🇬🇧👧

I enjoyed your highly detailed and nostalgic story about the very well supplied shop of your childhood, and your hijinks with your friend. It reminds me of the old timey country general stores of my own childhood in West Virginia in the 70s. The ramble-tamble cramped but efficient layout of everything hidden away in just about every conceivable square inch available. There were several, but the only one whose name I recall atm is Stahlman's, and although I can visualize them all to some extent, I can't recall for sure which one that one was. We weren't at any of them frequently, as they weren't convenient to where we lived in the country. And if we were passing by the one or two that were, it was sadly, on the way to a bigger store in the small town that had more selection and better prices. But I always loved the smells, similar to the ones you mentioned, and the unusual things available. I'd leave some Google Maps links to the few buildings still standing, but KZbin usually deletes anything like that. They are wretched. The Southern States feed store in Spencer, WV, is still there. It's a small chain that we resupplied our farm many times a year. It always had the smell of animal feeds and leather and machinery oil, etc, that I loved. And in those days, the cigar and aromatic rum(?) or other flavored pipe tobacco smoke that the farmers always smoked. Across the parking lot was where the small, but slightly "world famous" (at least it attracts some people from around the world) Black Walnut Festival is still held every year. And the carnival rides that always made us children look forward to it with anticipation every year. And across the creek on the other side, is the old high school, now a middle school I think. Which I attended. And my father. He and I had the same English teacher about 30 years apart from each other, old Mrs "Iron Pants" Starche 😂. I don't suppose I ever knew her first name. But she was allegedly very tough, hence the nickname, although I didn't mind her. Lots of memories.

Hi Italia - that sure reminded me of my being raised in a regional town in Australia - the local store had to provide a bit of everything and we only bought what we needed. Mum and Dad had 10 of us so we kept the local corner stores in business. Enjoyed reading your story.

Millennials probably not happy there's just great writing and no meaningless, and random-ass memes involved. (Plus it's 480p and they only do 720p and upwards) 😁

They overcame this by padding her clothes.[3] In the 1970s and 1980s, Baron co-starred in the ITV sitcom Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt […]
