You are one lucky duck!! A gorgeous colony, boxed up and ready to roll, and it came with spare, brand-spanking new virgin queens! There might've been a few hiccups, but all in all, a job splendidly done~

The sale of the house will close tomorrow, so you must (1) locate the bees, (2) open the wall, (3) remove the bees, (4) repair the wall, and (5) write a letter informing the buyer that everything is okay now. ... and while you're at it, how 'bout fixin' a couple of leaky faucets, and the roof should be re-shingled, and then re-paint the living room, and then .......
@628DirtRooster6 жыл бұрын
Haaa! They always wait until the last minute and then have a bunch of hoops for me to jump through. I did two others last week that had just rented and need bees out immediately. I guess I should quit everything else I have going on and set up my office at the fire department for these life threatening emergencies they call me with. I can't complain though. I enjoy it too much.

Great video ! Got to ask ... how long can you bank bred queens in a queen cage in a hive? They have to have an expiration date, but is it days, weeks, or as long as nurses feed them? Also I caught 2 swarms a couple weeks back, how long till I give up on the queen that came with them? 1 is doing great. Other isn't laying yet...
@628DirtRooster6 жыл бұрын
Queens can take seven to ten days to start laying after being bred. You can bank bred queens as long as you want but you have to keep open brood next to them to keep nurses tending them.

I have a question for you regarding vacuuming bees. This time of year when the comb is full of nectar I have a very hard time not coating the bees with nectar while vacuuming. I have lost way to many bees this way. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance
@628DirtRooster6 жыл бұрын
Biggest thing is don't vac any honey. If you do accidentally turn them into a ball of goo then as soon as you get home dump the whole bunch on the top bars of a ten frame deep then take your hive tool and start flipping them like flapjacks for a twenty minutes or so (gently) until they've all kind of separated and are beginning to clean themselves up. They will be scattered everywhere. Don't worry about whether they are in the box at that point. Get them all separated and leave them alone for the rest of the day.
@russiane.lection-hacker20576 жыл бұрын
If you keep the suction low enough (valved side vent) so that it has just enough vacuum to suck in the bees right in front of the hose, and keep it just over 1 bee space above the comb, your chances of vacuuming comb are minimal. Also, don't vacuum from the underside of the comb once you've started cutting. Instead, use a bit of smoke to drive the bees up, then vacuum them. hth
