Force Awakens was definitely the slow start, they already knew what they wanted to do with the new trilogy, after it made bank at the box office they figured "lets double down" and so TLJ was just full blown "the message", the girls are never wrong, Finn, Poe and Luke are muppets who spend the entire film getting slapped, tazed, stun gunned or talked down to by the purple haired girl boss and basically told "respect mah authorrity you cocky cocksure flyyyboy".

@ChaoticYak1
@ChaoticYak1 Ай бұрын
Honestly, I think they messed up with making Hans a villain out of nowhere. The tension of trying to come to grips with her powers was enough for the movie even if they didn't dare make Elsa the villain. The irony is that she declares that she's embracing who she is and throws everything to the wind and shows how powerful she is, but that power is hurting others even though she doesn't realize it. And later she admits that she has no control over what is happening, that she can't do anything. The only way that the winter was broken was when she actually took control of her power. I suppose self-control isn't a message that society wants to put out nowadays but whether they meant to or not, that is really the message of that movie.

@@MegaSpideyman Po, Finn, and Rey all had promising introductions. Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren seemed menacing. The first battle showed First Order stormtroopers appearing competent and dangerous. Loads of potential. Then the rest of the movie happened. Yeah they had the general outline done well but key events and narration needs an overhaul. The SifoDyas plot point, the strange acceptance of an army from some dubious Clone makers; more of the jedi vs Republic struggle regarding the Chancellor, etc etc to facilitate a more gradual change of Anakin from a good Jedi to a more morally/ethically flexible man who is willing to dabble in the Dark Side. Also, please take Jar Jar out.

Mauler shouting at the Coen Brother’s gives me great joy. They have produced some of the best movies of the 90s and 2000s. It is interesting how much of their work is portraying typically “bad” storytelling in a subversive and refreshing light. I’ve had dozens of conversations about how that abrupt death works incredibly well for what the film is attempting to tell with its storytelling.

“Write what you know” absolutely needs the caveat that a writer can research subjects and talk to people who know the subject. An intensely rude journalist dismissed everything about Brandon Sanderson because he’s lived a peaceful, uneventful life. But who cares? He’s extremely creative and imaginitive, he takes the time to study a subject before writing about it, and he seeks the opinions of people who have more experience.

Oh, The Final Countdown is so great! It's an old time travel story that takes itself very seriously, played completely straight. Half the movie is spent just trying to figure out what the hell happened, there's some profound stuff about history throughout, and while very dated, it does a great job with its production for both action and everything in-between. As was stated, it's onboard the real ship, using the real planes, featuring real US Navy personnel, etc. A very good soundtrack on top of everything else. One of my favorite classic military movies.

For the last decent Disney movie I will argue Tangled. Because we need more awareness of narcissists and what they'll actually do in this world. EDIT: I can forgive a LOT of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but the biggest thing that is the kiss of death looking back? Turning Egon into a cross between a deadbeat dad and Alexander Roivas from Eternal Darkness. I REALLY hate that they made him a completely absent father until after he's dead.
@samwallaceart288
@samwallaceart288 Ай бұрын
_Tangled_ is my favorite of all Disney. It just nails every beat; accessible fun _and_ artistically gorgeous, great songs _and_ great dialogue, perfectly balanced. For me, _Frozen_ was the beginning of the "woke Disney" era. They made a _big_ deal about how that movie curbs the "true love" cliché with the sister angle. What started as an accident with how Frozen was written became absolute gospel for Disney; "remake the story, but take out the guy; make the awesome female character an object of worship at all costs" Tangled has zero of that, it's just a good movie minding its own business.

When it comes to what Disney movie was the last one you liked. Well for me, being a "bit" older then you guys, the last one I liked was The Great Mouse Detective, 1986. I was 21 at the time, I watched it with my younger cousin. I enjoyed it, mostly cause they used some really good Swedish actors for the Swedish dub. Sure I liked UP to, but that's about it. There have been good movies after that, but I never watched them in a movie theater, so it's not the same.

I don't think Frozen is a "must see" at all. Frozen was made for girls (ages 2-18 mainly). Basically, its about a magic powered girl (Elsa) accidentally hurting and almost killing (twice, I seem to remember) her younger sister, Anna (who does NOT have powers). There's a redemption arc of sorts (Anna's love for her older sister, and Elsa realizing that love is the answer), ...but without the voice acting of Kristen Bell (Anna), and her singing in many popular memorable songs, and obviously a mega mega hit song by Idina Menzel (Let It Go - almost 5 billion views on YT among 4 "official" vids), and the film would have done about as well as Tangled ($600 million).

I don't know when The Message started appearing in movies, but in TV shows it was probably Quincy. After a few decent (?) seasons, every episode was about some kind of public safety hobby horse for Jack Klugman to get on; I think the first one I can remember was driver awareness and people falling asleep at the wheel on the Interstates; the writing was so painfully bad that it made you wince. Later there was a show called The Trials of Rosie O'Grady that followed a similar path and in one episode the lead actress actually turned and delivered a monologue straight to camera, and she looked so embarrassed doing it, as if she wanted to beg for the viewers not to laugh their arses off at her. Good times.

In terms of Angel’s ending, there are stories when you really need to focus on what matters most to a character, rather than a viewer’s/reader’s desire for a happily ever after. I wrote a story where literally every major character is killed, but it’s intended to be uplifting. Because each of them first gets what they want most, and their goals are achieved.

Batman would take out Sandman in one scene in a Sinister Six scenario where he's fighting the top tier of Spider-Man's rogues gallery. Sandman has an easily exploited weakness that would be quite obvious to someone as brilliant as Batman. Like if you asked me to write that comic, I would include Sandman as the chump who gets taken out first and easiest. Green Goblin is top tier and would present a serious threat to Batman, I won't even argue that. Other good candidates would be Chameleon, who would put Batman's detective skills to the test; Lizard, who is basically a very smart, even stronger version of Croc (with shades of Man-Bat); and Kraven the Hunter is another top tier threat due to his ability to match Batman in skills, outmatch him in strength, and his tactical flexibility. Hilariously, I can't think of a single Batman villain who would threaten Spider-Man. I mean, maybe the Joker? Until they were in the same room, where Spidey's superhuman speed and agility would win the day.

I think Mr Freeze, Scarecrow, the League of Shadows, and the Riddler could give Spidey a run for his money; they'd just need to kidnap MJ and lure him into a trap.
@wolfofthewest8019
@wolfofthewest8019 Ай бұрын
@@samwallaceart288 Yeah, Mr. Freeze and Scarecrow are good choices too. Not so sure about the League of Shadows, unless we're also counting Ras. A bunch of ninjas would get smoked by the combination of super agility and spider-senses. Maybe with Ras organizing them? Still, at the end of the day the League is pretty much that same thing as The Hand, and Spidey would rock the Hand. As for Riddler, it's the same problem as Joker. Sure, if he kidnaps MJ he can lure Spidey into a deathtrap...but once he's got Spidey in his clutches, he's gonna want to brag and do the villain monologue, and that's when super agility and spidey sense ensures he gets chumped. Batman's "thinky" villains, like Riddler and Joker, can't handle Bats in a fight either, but at least with Bats if you're standing 50 feet away you can run for it. With Spidey, he'll clear 150 feet and be punching you in your non-superpowered normal human head with enough force to shatter an engine block before you can blink. And like, all those sneaky traps and barriers you thought you put between yourself and him? Useless, because his spidey sense thwarts them all. Now, Mr. Freeze? Cold is going to slow down Spidey's reactions. And Scarecrow? Very hard to dodge a cloud of gas, and spidey sense isn't much help when you're hallucinating threats.

@samwallaceart288 Ай бұрын
@@wolfofthewest8019 Yeah, League of Shadows and Riddler, it's on the condition that it's a Civil War-style trap where the villains have a blast-wall to hide behind and they kill Spidey as quickly as possible before he finds a way out. Mr. Freeze could definitely do a 1v1 though. Between his ice powers and the lost love backstory, Mr. Freeze would be an excellent Spiderman opponent.

@@samwallaceart288 "Between his ice powers and the lost love backstory, Mr. Freeze would be an excellent Spiderman opponent." Honestly, well-meaning scientists who turned themselves into mutant freaks and go on a villainous rampage is like two-thirds of Spidey's rogues galley already, he'd fit right in.

On my "showing character to a black friend" superchat, I meant it more in the context of characters who fall under a stereotype but you're trying to do it right. With most characters this won't really come up, but supposing there was a black gangster who shows up from the inner city in my story, such questions help remind me not to fall back on 20-year-old movie clichés but put a little more thought into it. Whether or not I actually show anyone isn't really the point, just that if they _did_ see it, it would hold up to scrutiny quality-wise. It's mostly just me not being familiar with the culture first-hand and not having to deal with the stereotypes personally, it's useful to do research and question "am I getting the culture right or am I parroting what I saw in a movie somewhere?" Question invites me to actually look up videos of the people in question, whatever the class, race, location, or profession, and actually study the way they talk and what they prioritize. Black gangsters feels like a common example but really this applies to anybody you're trying to write. If I'm writing about a master welder, I wanna know that a real mechanic reading it will be able to enjoy it; that's more what I'm getting at. But again, that's to each their own; it shouldn't be mandated arbitrarily by some marketing yahoo

Not my favourite cinema moment, but certainly the most unexpected and gut-wrenching was the destruction of the Enterprise in The Search for Spock. The death of Spock in Wrath of Khan had been telegraphed but the destruction of the Enterprise came out of nowhere. "My God, Bones, what have I done?"

In American schools, they are teaching that January 6th was the worst event in modern history. Little to no mention of 9/11 anymore. It is sad for the people who died to just be forgotten in a horrible tragedy like that.

13:35 Re Frozen and its hyper-popularity: Speaking as a girl with a sister (who I even saw it with, heh)- yeah, it was okay, and of course that one song was epic, but I wouldn't put it quality-wise with some of the other Disney films, like Beauty and the Beast. I remember thinking, "Why does Kristen Bell keep singing when Idina Menzel is in the cast?" This was after Bell's third song or so, and we hadn't even got to Let It Go.

Could someone explain why wolf doesn't stream with efap crew anymore? I'm new to most of these channels and haven't caught up with their videos. But seems like there is some drama that went down with them.

Wolf got into a lot of heated back and forths with people he covered (prior to / separately from EFAP); basically he sought out toxic people to ridicule, they got toxic on him, and he'd be toxic right back. Turned into a vicious cycle of negativity and it cut too close to home. While MauLer and Rags on their EFAPs with him could brush stuff off or at least pick their battles better, Wolf had a way of getting genuinely pissed off at the internet and needing to take sabbaticals. Moreso than the others, Wolf had a dedicated and intense anti-fanbase (which his habits of picking fights didn't really help) and it just got to the point where his hobby was making him miserable. MauLer and Rags were cool with him at every step and when he was like "guys I need to just tap out here" they were like "sure man, whatever you need just let us know how we can help". Afterwards Fringy became their regular 3rd, which I'm happy with cause he was on every other episode anyways and is a good complement to Rags IMO. Wolf and the others are still on good terms in DMs, Wolf is just taking it easy, far as I know. Recently Wolf started the EFAP Highlights channel and does some editing for them, but it seems he's had enough of the main-spotlight big-name kind of viewer engagement.

Just to be kind of pedantic... A lot of the first Ghostbuster's aesthetic/feeling comes from how the ghostbusters were portrayed. They were all (aside from Winston and Janine) actually intelligent people, professors and the like. But they were basically just normal people. They busted and fought ghosts but despite the fantastic premise of their job, they were just pest control. It was very down to earth despite the absurdity and fantastic nature of fighting ghosts.

Hey, How's it going guys Great show so far. Wanna touch base with you on a movie. Specifically, "The Final Countdown" you heard about. It's a movie I would HIGHLY recommend. 1. For a 'B" rated movie the production on it was top notch for the time. 2. It had live action shots from an actual Aircraft Carrier (it's a somewhat spoiler sorry). 3. Actors and Actresses did a good job action, they were in the moment and worked. Sorry for the rant but you guys like older war movies and this at least fits the bill. May your liquor always flow and the bill be just as low.
