Hi DIY Dudes. Well my son, Adam and I, are just finishing up painting our (your design) Open Concept Closet Renovation. It looks amazing. My wife has ordered the coat hooks and they arrive tomorrow. Thank you so much for the inspiration. I'm 66 and you taught me to just do it which in turn has taught Adam to just do it and he will teach his children this valuable life lesson. If I knew how to send you photos of the before and after I would. Anyway, thanks again and take care, Peter.

Beautiful job! I like the simplicity. I see others with all kinds of special tools,Kreg machine,nothing wrong with that but it just takes too long. Not everybody has these specialty tools. I like the way you did it and it comes out super nice.

Can you provide a list of pieces of wood you need to make this? Like how many 2x4’s do you need and how particle boards do you need? What size of screws are you using? Things like that.
@DIYDudes2 жыл бұрын
Hey John it’s difficult to provide because it’s custom built to our closet. We used 2 4x8 x 1/2” mdf and about 8 2x4 x 8’ Good luck thanks

How many inches in width did you make the MDF for the board and batten on the walls? Were the horizontal cuts the same width as the vertical cuts?
@DIYDudes2 жыл бұрын
I believe we did 4” for the verticals and 6” for the base

I’m curious if it makes sense to rip out the flooring before building on top of it so if you replace the floors you won’t have the old stuff underneath or does that even matter?
@DIYDudes3 ай бұрын
It’s really up to you, you can just the floor afterwards if your replacing it. Good luck!

Good evening - I’m curious, how are the flat 2x4’s staying in place at the top? And is it Just the two long pieces resting on the MDF, nothing on the side of the walls like when building the base shelf and bench? Are the two long 2x4’s up top not fastened into the wall at all? If that’s the case, how did you get the piece in the middle attached to them (you can see it when you’re applying adhesive to the MDF board that’ll go on the bottom)? Sorry - not the handiest of men but I’ve almost completed this project and am a little stumped here. Thanks!
@DIYDudes Жыл бұрын
It’s actually just resting on that mdf side rail the two long pieces just rest on the rail then the short ones go in, screw those to the wall then screw the long ones to those. Good luck!

What 2x4's do I buy at Lowes? They have soft/ hard wood... the pine might be easier for me to work with but will it be strong enough ? I'm a 50 yr old former flight attendant and no background with building anything so I'm way over my head with this.. 😅

What type of screws did u use at the bench?

I’m pretty sure #2 construction screws. The are good for 250 lbs each. If you want to overkill with bigger that’s good to. Thanks for watching!

How difficult would it have been to do a full open concept? Any reason you didn't remove the closet posts on the left and right side?
@DIYDudes3 жыл бұрын
Rick these are super easy to build. You can basically cut the mdf to what ever design you dream up… I’m actually doing another closet right now where I did open the whole closet up and it was pretty easy. Keep an eye out for the video in a couple weeks

Looks great but two major problems is 1. The mdf is super absorbent fiber board so as soon as you place wet coats, boots, umbrellas etc. it will bubble and warp. 2. Glidden paint is practically colored water. I would recommend using a behr marquis in semi gloss, the additional silicone will make it more durable and water resistant. This was a great idea and executed very well, just consider better materials high traffic areas.
@DIYDudes2 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree more durable paint would keep it looking crisp for longer.
@DIYDudes Жыл бұрын
Also with the water issue you would have that issue with any painted wood, if you are doing something like this it’s not meant to hold standing water

Looks great, I'm going to follow this design as well! What size did you cut the batten mdf panels? Thank you!
@DIYDudes3 жыл бұрын
I cut them to 4.5” But really it’s personal preference good luck! We are doing another similar build this week as well
@cancelOG3 жыл бұрын
@@DIYDudes thanks appreciate the reply! I've bought precut mdf panels at 3.5", so it'll save me some time cutting. I'll probably do the bench top with an acacia countertop piece. I actually prefer how you made your bench flush with the entry of the closet, but I'm missing about 2-3" if I buy the countertop. It sucks, so it'll have to be a little shorter. Anything else other than an mdf/plywood piece, the top will have to be made of 2 wood pieces which will show a line in the middle but unfortunately I prefer one solid piece without.
@DIYDudes3 жыл бұрын
The great thing about these builds is you can really make them what ever design you can imagine and they look great. Good luck!
@christianpolytechnique74042 жыл бұрын
@@cancelOG I also thought of installing an acacia countertop piece. For the 2 - 3 inches missing at the front,just put that missing 2-3 inches at the back on the bench so the front is gonna stay nice.
@cancelOG2 жыл бұрын
@@christianpolytechnique7404 I just used an acacia countertop without extending or doing anything special. It's really isn't that bad, it looks nice. The countertop stops halfway at the moulding. Kind of where the door used to be. I'm pretty happy with it!

Worst "trend" EVER. My home was gutted and flopped with this "open concept" closet idea-DON'T DO IT! Closet doors are for keeping DUST OUT of your shoes, clothing and shelves. There is NOTHING chic about dusty clothing. No matter how organized they are, open closets are cluttered-looking eyesore that makes a room appear smaller, attracts the eye like a magnet, and traps every bit of dust and dirt into its four corners and shelves. My winter jackets and boots are covered in dust by autumn, my summer dressed and tops coated with dust by spring. BAD IDEA!
@DIYDudes2 жыл бұрын
It works well if you cycle out the clothes for the seasons. Maybe not for every one but it does make for a bold entry way
