To me minimalism means just owning what you need without any excess or minimal excess. Eventhough it is often depicted as a white/grey/black/beige aesthetic, I don't think you need to fit that aesthetic to use the label minimalist. So I think it's a bit pointless to define a new label for a certain aesthetic of minimalism. Anyway I loved seeing your closet!

Pia Loves Color I think minimalism is about owning what you love and not owning things for the sake of owning them. It's also, to me, about being more mindful to what we purchase.

@@elleelle9048 Hi I would add that things is just a part of minimalism as we can add to that people, activities, job. Put your energy on things and people that matter to you because they make you feel good in order to feel overall better and as a consequence act better towards other people :-)

I feel people often confuse minimalism as a lifestyle (your definition) and minimalism as a decoration/architectural style, which is a pitty because people's minimalism is so individually expressed

We're learning SOOOO much about Hannah. Last Video: My parents are hippies, they're a little bemused about where I came from. This Video: I was an actress in Belgium. Me thinking: Sounds EXACTLY like something a daughter of hippies would do.

Thanks for putting yourself out there. I'm a lot older than you but I find I have a lot to learn (or rediscover) from your openness. You share a vulnerability along with your great strength and talent. It's not easy to find this balance, so kudos to you. I love your sense of style. I recently discovered you in a quest for fashion and style videos that don't advocate consumerism. I've been working my way through your playlists and have been inspired to go back to wearing makeup. I think you are right - you are not holding an excess of belongings but your taste and curation skills are magnificent. Lush minimalism is a perfect name for your style. Keep up the good work.

Congrats on the sponsorship! So excited to watch this video. I just want to leave a quick not to say that I do identify as a minimalist and the aesthetic that people tend to attach to that word is bullshit honestly. I don't think minimalism has anything to do with how things look, it's about how we think about the things we bring in to our home. Like I said, I'm a minimalist but my wardrobe includes tons of color and patterns, I like bright makeup, and I prefer a vintage/boho feel to all my decor. It doesn't look the way people think minimalism should look. My point is, you can totally call yourself a minimalist if you employ minimalist ideas in your life. That's what it's all about! Anyways, I love your set up! I don't have an actual closet either and I really want a hanging rack (all my stuff is shoved in a dresser) but I just know my cats would pull all the clothes off of it haha

I've watched many videos on minimalism and while informative they always seem to lean so heavily on blacks/grays/whites. While I appreciate that neutral look on other people it's not my personal vibe. I live in a perennial summer, I live in Florida. Constant sun encourages more color so I love your idea of colorful minimalism!! Ikea suggestion. As someone who is on an Ikea budget but who does not want her home to look like an Ikea showroom, most of their furniture takes paint extremely well. I have one of their smaller carts and I spray painted the metal parts a matte gold and did a removable wallpaper on the shelves. It's a lot easier to look at and wasn't a lot of additional investment.

I noticed (as other commenters have) that you don’t really wear jeans, I don’t either and haven’t for 2 years now for the same reason. They just aren’t comfy for me. I find myself wearing a lot of leggings, nice athleisure wear, and dresses. What do you wear for dressier occasions when you don’t want to wear a dress? At this point I find myself always in a dress in those instances because my other non jeans stuff is too casual and I’ve never found slacks that weren’t just as restricting as jeans. Thanks so much for giving us an insight into your home. It’s beautiful!

I label myself as an essentialist and I like this term! I don’t think minimalism or essentialism is about the item itself (the aesthetic or the style of the item), but it’s about owning less things and cherishing everything you own.. which seems exactly what you’re doing! 🌸 My essentialism is not just for the environment or conscious consumerism but for myself. I live more efficiently (in terms of time and energy), allowing me to invest more time and energy on things that truly matter to me.

Wow Hannah the more you post, the more you are goals 😍 My closet consists of cheap clothes that are functional, plus I don’t even need clothes for work right now since I just wear the hospital’s scrubs, so I’m pretty much just wearing t shirts and workout clothes from my closet, plus a few outfits for Sunday services. I think once I am a full fledged working adult (currently med student) I can spend the money on some new clothes. I really don’t buy clothes that often

You may not consider yourself to be minimalistic but I do think of you as minimalistic and you have actually influenced me towards being more minimalistic myself. I feel like I still have a lot more that I could declutter but I have let go of so much lately and it does not feel like a loss. It is so much easier to be clean and organized if you dont have so much stuff that you don't know where to put it. Me listening to you talking about wanting space made me realise that I always felt overwhelmed with my stuff and struggled to maintain an orderly living space because I just had too much. I probably couldn't see that because throughout my adult years I have loved to shop and I have accumulated so much. I think you shy away from the label "minimalist" because you realise that having 8 highlighters or 25 lipsticks (I'm vaguely estimating here) isn't exactly minimalistic but for a girl that used to be practically swimming in product that is pretty good. You also have set boundaries for how much space your cosmetics are allowed to take up. I think makeup is the only area of your life that I feel you don't quite fit in to the label. Maybe it's because there are extreme minimalists that relatable people feel like downsizing isn't being minimalistic?

I love how Sadie modeled next to the homechef box 😂 I always wonder how these boxes compare waste-wise to "normal" grocery shopping, the hello fresh videos I've seen seemed to have a lot of (recyclable but bulky) packaging, but they do seem practical 😁

there is a lot of debate about this in the news right now! Recent studies appear to show that meal-kit services produce more recyclable waste but save enormously when it comes to food waste. Here's the best piece I read: time.com/5573333/are-meal-kits-bad-environmental/

I read an NPR article that said that the carbon footprint of one of these kits is actually less than that of a regular home cooked meal. But I agree, it feels like so much trash and access to recycling where I live is complicated...

I just looked at the Home Chef website briefly and it definitely doesn't look like a good choice me. I'm going to try to stick to a $150 budget on food for each month at the grocery stores at least for a while. That means looking at ads and seeing what is on sale with what I eat and if I find coupons then I'm cashing them in for what I eat. I'm aiming to achieve this $150 goal so I can have more money for upcoming bills and some new clothes that are dressy casual and summer appropriate since it is summer half the year where I live. I'll have a budget for the clothes when I do go shopping so I don't have any chance of going overboard if I find so many things that I love. If it wasn't for you I doubt I would be where I am on budgeting, etc. and I thank you for your positive influence on makeup and money. You really make a difference just by having this channel and talking about things.

I love this! It feels so cozy yet curated at the same time. (#goals) I would love some apartment storage/decorating tips in the future! I find it so hard to not buy new furniture as I move into a new home every other year or so. My furniture purchases end up being done quickly out of need instead of slowly over time, which leads to the overall look not being what I had been wanting in the first place. (I'm sure I'm not alone in that, haha.)

I love how you storaged your beautifull clothes and items, and because it’s so open and not overwelmed with clothes, you can realy see the nice different designs and textures. It looks so neat and clean, and that’s deffinetly fantastic when you live in a open space. We turned a bedroom in a walk in closset, and because I have so much storage room, everything is to full, overwelmed and overpacked, how more storage you own,how more clothes and other items you own, like shoes, jackets, coats, bedlinnen, just everything.Iplanned to clean up my walkin closet in the summermonths, and because of my eds,and the fact that I need to lay down flat in bed for 22 hours a day, this Will be a job that cost me a lot of time.I don’t mind that, but I only can do one shelf or a half shelf a day.My husband loves to help me,but I realy need to clean my clothes alone, and I want to decide by myself what I want to keep or donate. But I want to keep about the half of what I own now,and for the further future, because I did major declutters before, and my health won’t get better,so I decided for the future, after my declutter, when a new item enters my closet, that another item needs to go,just to prevent that I need to do more major declutters in the future.I always find it hard to get rid of my clothes, but this time that Will be a lot easier, because I need to lay flat so much, and sit in a wheelchair, having swallow and digestive problems because of the eds,I gain Some weight,so I get rid of the clothes that are to small, and because I need to wair so many braces, and orthodesis,I wear many oversized clothes, not because I am to heavy, but because that gives me much more comfort in wearing, and before that I always liked perfect fitter clothes and drop tops, but my backbrace is a complete harnas from my neck to my tailbone,so small fit clothes I van’t wear anymore, that Will make my declutter easier but also emotional, because I need to wear a Total different kind of clothes, than the person I always was.I also can declutter all my high heels shoes. But looking it at the bright side I needed to change my outfits, because of my eds,and I need to wear Total different clothes, but I start to see now that I can still look verry feminin with a oversized sweater or shirt, with a nice stretched jeans under it,and beautifull boots,or half high shoes,or a oversized blouse with a nice stretched skirt,a oversized dress with a nice belt.I don’t need the oversized clothes because of my weight, but because they need to sit comfort with all my braces, and orthodesis, and I need to can lay down in bed comfort with my clothes, ofcourse I wear sometimes a pair of joggers with a oversized t,not the most feminin but the most practical when I have a day when I am in a lot of pain. But most times I try to look my best with clothes,make-up,and doing my hair because I feel a little better when I look a little better.I lay now for two years so much in bed and sit maximum 20 minutes,so my wardrobe changed a lot in those two years, and this Will be my first huge clothes declutter in two years, because I needed the time to think other about my clothingstyle, and it took time to say goodbye to my old style, but now I am ready to do this.Thank you for this fantastic video Hannah,it helped me to think a little other about my wardrobe, and saying goodbye to the old, because I am never able to wear that again, and I need to focus on the beautifull things I am able to wear, even if the style is totaly different,I am staying the same person,it just make me stronger, xoxo wendy❤️

Just wondering if you are going to continue getting Home Chef? Will you buy it with your own money? I always value your opinions about your purchases but this was different as it was sponsored (congrats and to many more!) So I'd like to know how you feel about it in relationship to YOUR money being spent. All the infuencers seem to love these boxes but they're not actually purchasing them so I'd love your thoughts overall, i.e., waste, cost, frequency, food budget, etc. Just all the things you think about like you do with beauty purchases. And if you're not going to actually buy the service please let us know! I need an objective opinion. 😏 And for those I come to you. 💖😁

I actually had a whole bit about this in the video but I cut it out for length because I assumed people would want me to get through the sponsorship and into the meat of the video as quickly as possible, so I really appreciate you asking this question! It makes me see that I should have kept that "final opinion" section, even if it made the video 1 minute longer, and It will help me decide what's important to address in future sponsored videos. Re: HomeChef, My account is paused, and I could see myself ordering a box from time to time if I'm having a super busy week like I was at the beginning of the month. For someone like me who is an experienced cook with a bunch of tried-and-true recipes at her disposal and a stable grocery shopping routine, I think it's amazing to have it on standby and use it in a pinch. The person it really makes the most sense for is someone who wants to transition to eating more whole-ingredients meals but doesn't want to "become a cook" (recipe books, trial-and-error, etc) or truly doesn't have time to plan and buy groceries. I think in that situation an ongoing subscription could be a game-changer, both health-wise and financially. I know that Samantha March and Jen Luvs Reviews both buy their own HomeChef boxes even though they've done sponsorships and gotten a few for free :)

Wonderful! Thank you for taking the time to answer me. It makes sense that since you cook you wouldn't use these on a regular basis but liked it enough that you would buy it depending on your schedule. Also I appreciate the info regarding the other influencers ... I think we all assume nobody on KZbin pays for anything unless specifically stated. I will be aware not to jump to conclusions in the future! 😊

I’ve been a home chef customer since 2016. I live 30 miles from the closest grocery store and work. I’ve found it’s helped us from just picking something easy(most likely unhealthy)up after work and bringing it home. I have a stressful job as a social worker and the last thing I want to do is go to the grocery store after work, plan a meal, and then go home and cook it. So at least a few times a week I just come home and can start cooking right away. We’ve been a customer so long we’ve been asked to test out some meals which has been fun. The ingredients are always fresh and the fact that it is proportioned is great because you cannot eat too much. I don’t get it every week but most weeks I do. It’s really flexible and the app is easy to use. Congratulations Hannah on your sponsorship!

I'm a home chef subscriber for several months now ... absolutely love it, and can't imagine not having it. My only complaint is that the insulation material in my boxes is shredded fabric, inside a plastic cover. I feel that it should be shredded paper, not fabric. The paper is recyclable. The fabric is pure landfill excess. Not that thrilled with the continuous stream of gel ice packs either. I wish there was a way to return the gel ice packs for re-use. However, at this time in my life I need the convenience desperately, and choose that over worrying intensely about the packaging.

I have similar concept of lifestyle with you! I think I called it "fun minimalism", because unlike you my pieces are pretty basic in style but I do love colours, which is something I don't see in many minimalists. I also used to have a wire rack as an open closet in my old home, which I actually loved way more than the closet I have now, because I feel like my current one is not built for someone like me. I've got things I've had for years (make that decades) but I still like them and wear them. I have decluttered a fair bit recently and I've rolled up my tops, underwear and jeans a la Marie Condo. That's helped significantly in allowing me to see what I have and it has also assuaged the desire to clothes shop. As always Sadie is being totally adorable! You have some gorgeous clothes.

I have one pair of black high-waisted leather-look Citizens of Humanity skinny jeans in my drawer. I don't wear them super often, mostly when I'm going to a club or sometimes if I'm putting together an edgy long-legs look for working at a tango festival. I put a premium on comfort and jeans just aren't that comfortable to me. I don't like tight things on my tummy :)

Your closet looks amazing!!! it's so refreshing to see the color and texture that you can include in this "lush minimalist" style. A lot of minimalist style videos kind of turn me off because they seem to be very neutral/no-makeup which i love for others but not for myself. would you consider doing a record collection tour? 😁

Hannah (or anyone who can help!) do you know the Etsy shop of the photographer that made the braids-covering-eyes poster? Or recommendations for photographers that make posters? I have more wall space than I used to and I want to put art on them by directly patroning artists, but I’ve been having difficulty finding a variety of photographers that sell their own original images. I’d really appreciate any recommendations!

I really enjoyed seeing your closet. I love how organized it looks out in the open. I have a huge closet, the size of a small bedroom and it's such a mess. You are inspiring me to re-organize. I was glad you said you are wearing your Hermes scarf. My mother collected them back in the 1980's , I have several that are in their original perfect orange boxes and have never even been worn. The designs are really gorgeous. I remember her saying she wanted to frame some of them. I can't remember the last time I wore a scarf...mostly because it's too warm here in Florida and I don't know how I would style it, but maybe next time it's cool enough or I have the chance, I will give it a try, because I shouldn't live my life trying to "save" the nice things and never use them. I hope you have a wonderful weekend Hannah! xo

Having open hanging space used to feel so messy to me until I hung everything according to colour. Even now that I have doors to close, seeing my clothes in a colour gradient is deeply satisfying.

Yes! Our little 1906 "working man's Victorian" rental has the earth's tiniest closets, so almost all of my clothes are on a rack in our bedroom. It's organized by category (dresses, blouses, skirts), with each category going dark to light with general color groupings. It makes all the difference for me! But I love the slightly jumbled look of Hannah's things, too.

Have you tried a bangs wash (where you tie the rest of your hair up, wash your bangs in the sink, and it somehow magically looks like you've washed all your hair)? Your hair looks lovely here, but thought you'd like the idea.

I loved this peak into your home and the tour of your closet! I aspire to be more minimalistic when it comes to (especially) clothes but find it really hard. I'm not buying so much new stuff anymore but still have so many clothes. I do declutters from time to time, but then there is always the question: where should the decluttered pieces go? I don't want to throw them away, but selling takes a lot of time and energy and donating where I live is tricky. Because often you don't know what will really happen with those donated clothes..

Dear Hannah, we are looking for a new appartment and many of them have that open living style. We (respectively my partner) love to cook, and as I am quite sensitive to smell and fragrance I am a bit worried that f.ex. my bed will smell like Thai Food, Salmon or Chili.. How do you handle that in your space? Your "bedroom" seems very close to the kitchen.. Other than that, very interesting video, thank you for sharing! :)

Mélanie Stamm I was wondering this as well, I couldn’t live in just an open space. I need separation, especially from other people, often and for long periods of time.

It doesn't seem to be a problem for us! The apartment does fill with the smell of food when we cook it, as it always has in any apartment, but the smell disperses over a few hours and doesn't seem to cling to our things or to our persons. We have a fan and a screen for the window which we use if it seems like it's getting stuffy. We also have pretty high ceilings. I think the spaciousness of the place helps smells disperse. It even seems like the litter box smells less here than it did in the old place. Our apartment happens to have really good ventilation, too--a good kitchen fan, a good air filter, and a bathroom fan that turns on automatically when in senses moisture. I hope this helps! I really recommend giving open-concept living a try. We are IN LOVE with it.

I'm currently in a studio basement apartment and would recommend that if you want to try living in an open concept space to get something that's above ground, if you live in a cold area of the world. I've found it extremely hard to heat through the winter here in Canada and that smells tend to linger more with the limited ventilation of a basement. It would probably be better to have the kitchen next to the window to help with the ventilation, mine is not and I've set off the fire alarm so many times even with the stove fan on 😅

I like the idea of lush minimalism! I'm also an aesthetic minimalist in many ways, but sometimes I gravitate to loud makeup, statement jewelry and just taking up space visually, aesthetic minimalism and ideological minimalism don't always go together.

I’m about halfway through the video, but I had to stop to comment! Eeeek. I love this one! You have a tarot deck?! And crystals?! And you and Joe will sometimes pick a card and feel your feelings together? Sooo cute. I would love to know more about your spirituality! How do you use your crystals? That has been one of the things that has been really helpful for me during my lowboy year: I have not bought any crystals or tarot decks! I was getting insane with the crystals. It was ridiculous. Also, I think that an open concept space is such a design challenge, at least for someone like me who prefers everything neat and tucked away, but this looks soooo good! I’m very impressed!

Love your look today - something of vintage 1950s! It's very cute. I can identify with that thing of wanting to collect and have lots of lovely things around me and to choose from. However, it can be burdensome, so it's more like restrained baroque. That's post-post-modern I guess.

HANNAH I just deep a deep dive, I was looking at poema and then somehow got onto your website. You lived in Jerusalem? I'd love to hear about that! Also I am screaming that you had an essay in NYTimes Modern Love because my best friend and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Modern Love and read it compulsively. Can't wait to read the essay but came over here to scream in the interim Edit 1: “You can’t cure depression,” Joe told me once. “You can only get better at living with it.” This put into words everything I want to say about my mental illness. Edit 2: I think my puppy is to me what Sadie is to you and Joe. My boy is a reason to get out of bed and to get out of the house and to walk and to laugh. Thank you for the wonderful story

I think your space looks great. I know that I would never be able to live in an open an open space without blocking off specific areas either with bookshelves or some type of screen situation. Also, I could never live without a dresser. I actually don’t own a lot of clothes but I have to have a dresser and I own many collectibles and would never be able to give them up. I have things that are put away in boxes from when we moved that I don’t have space to inbox them to but just knowing that they are there and safe makes me okay. Do you ever see yourselves moving into a larger space?
