Flex tested the trucks. Ford has a limited slip in the rear. The Chevy had an open differential. But it now has a Powertrax No Slip locker in the rear.

Wow. You can clearly see that in some cases if you have enough power that a locking rear dif is more important than having 4 wheel drive with an open dif.

I learned in an ice storm driving around a Chevy base 2 wheel drive work truck just how much of a difference their differential made compared to Fords . I was going up hills four wheel drive fords couldn't even start to go up . Plain old all season tires too . This is a great video . More people should know about GM's differentials compared to Fords .

Limited slip has clutches and they can only hold so much power. In this worse case situation you have a tire with 100% traction and one with 0% in the rear. Limited slip clutches can generally only function with a 40-50% torque difference between wheels. This becomes a huge problem when you run bigger/wider tires and off road. My f250 with 40s used to have a limited slip until I put a air locker in it. Off road it acted like a open diff in anything other than mud. The clutches even though they weren’t worn out, couldn’t handle the power difference. This is completely normal and expected with limited slip. Normal street driving this isn’t a issue because the torque difference between tires will never be 70-100% like it is off road. Lockers matter more than anything off road besides tires. A 4wd vehicle is essentially 2wd without lockers. Detroit, a spool, air locker, lunchbox, anything that is a straight locker is the only way to go.

Nope. He actually had it repaired because it had a shutter. So it was brought to the shop before this video. Unless they did a crap job.

He wasn't spinning the free wheel enough for the clutch plates to heat up. Ford diffs operate with friction modifier fluid that will lock the axle together when the clutch plates on the spinning wheel gets too hot.

Isn’t the Ford lsd the same as a Jeep’s have to left foot brake as you give it gas or they will not work well under heavy load. Would love to see it done again.

@@kells18 yes they are both trac loc diffs and do not / will not lock. The Jeeps have BLD function on top of the lsd and work rather well. Any lsd on its own can only transfer so much torque. They are fairly useless off road

LSD has friction point where the clutch packs will slip and if the force needed to get a heavy ass truck up a fairly steep incline is greater than the point of which the clutch packs will start to slip than no it isn't broken as the are designed to slip a little and the clutch packs can only do so much.

Open diff works on multiplication. Where 'n' is the number of drive wheels and 'f' is the coeficcient of friction of the wheel with the least grip. n.f gives you your effective power transfer. One wheel on ice with a CoF of 10% and the other on cement with a CoF of 80% will give you effective power transfer of 20%. Locked diff works on addition. Where 'fx' is the coefficient of friction for the respective wheel. So a 2wd locked diff would be f1+f2. One wheel on ice with a CoF of 0.1 and the other on cement with a CoF of 0.8 will give you effective power transfer of 0.9. LSD works by *roughly* averaging the coefficient of friction of each drive wheel. where 'fx' is the CoF of each respective wheel, and 'n' is the number of drive wheels, you'd do f1+f2/n. One wheel on ice with a CoF of 0.1 and the other on cement with a CoF of 0.8 would give you effective power transfer of 0.5

Great demonstration. I still prefer mechanical LS and with ESC braking however it can be equally as effective with just open diffs. Electronic Stability Control braking with open diffs basically apply the bakes to the spinning wheel on the same axle which then sends the power directly to the other on that axle. No so desirable on a track car due to it's limiting action but works well on general weekend light truck crawling or off road infrequent off road duties. You can also do the same on the center diff and front on AWD/4X4. You can see that the clamping force is somewhat progressive rather than full brake on the spinning wheel. Like manual transmission, mechanical clutch types limited slip is becoming less available and instead incorporated with ESC.

@@JameyCampbell_54 An Aussie is pretty tough. I don't know of it's longevity on a street rod however many are surviving 35" plus tires with very stout gears which means huge torque multiplication. Of the lunchbox lockers IMO it is one of the better ones.

It appears the Ford has open diffs. If so, in theory its a 2 wheel drive vehicle even in 4x4. The chevy is a 3 wheel drive vehicle.

Well I think they have a locker that was just not locked but in 4wd on the first run with the chevy so kinda still 2 wheel if they are in a bind and then they put it in 2wd and locked it because ya the 4wds should come with an LSD

In 4-hi with open diffs, yes, 4wd is basically 2wd when in low traction situations. 4-lo is when they're generally locked together for a true 4wd. So yeah, a 2wd with a limited slip or locker is nearly the same effectiveness as a 4-hi with a truck that has open diffs.

FX4 does not have a LSD, it is open diff on both axles, it's basically Suspension upgrades from regular 4X4.

The truck was able to spin both tires, on even surfaces. I belive it did have clutch packs in the diff.

NO, it will spin both tires if there is resistance on both tires. It does not have to be equal resistance, but close. The spin speed will be different but both wheels will spin. This fact throws you off. My 2019 does spin both when on dry surface, but spins mostly one tire when wet. Best way to see is to lift it and hand spin one wheel. Also, apply the brake a little while hitting the throttle when wheel lifts off the ground, clutch pack might be or starting to be worn. I see the drivers rear smoking, no way that's any kind of LSD, front or rear.

I thought about another locker. But I don't want to spend too much money on an old truck. Also, I heard Chevy's front diff is weak. It's a clam shell design which is made out of aluminum. New Chevy models are stronger and reinforced. I have the earlier version which is weaker. If i had solid axle front and back. I would definitely have 2 lockers

That truck has over 600k miles on it. I put work into it. It needs a paint job. Eventually a new engine and transmission if i keep it. But the engine runs fine. Leaks oil of course. But still has life in it. I debated a 400 hp engine. Not sure if i want to drop that kind of money into it lol

Man do an ls swap a 5.3 or even 4.8 you can go 6.0 just cost more and you can use the 60e and try your luck or just to get you off the ground but if you pull the motor yourself at a junk yard you should be able to get it for around $300 with the computer and if you get the harness you can use it but it will probably be easier to get a standalone harness for like $300-$$550 and for under $300 cam from summit they have some pretty good deals and some valve springs for around another hundred and im sure several hundred more fr a fuel pump,motor mounts,hoses,adapters and stuff and you will need a tune for the cam but if you dont care about that much more power or just to get it in you can just delete the vats and not do a cam and be good to go but really for under $1500 you can probably get something going although I would not expect that 4l60e to last long if you put a cam in so id look into a 4l80e thats something I need to do on my 04 because I keep breaking 60s and i believe all you have to change out on the transfer case is the input shaft and im not sue about driveshaft lengths but if you set your mind to it you can do it checkout the Driveway Engineer KZbin channel

it only works where you have some traction on the other wheel. Like trying to take off strong on pavement or maybe dirt. If not, it becomes a locker which could be dangerous.

The Ford DOESN'T have a limited slip diff, its an anti spin diff with abs grabbing the spinning tire to help send power to the other tire. Anti Spin isn't a limited slip, a simple trick is to apply the emergency brake very slightly and give it gas which will mechanically send power to the wheel with traction. If they did that then the truck could've done this in 2wd.

Yea LSDs aren`t so effective. If you are light offroading, they work fine but in harder condisions like mudding or rock crawling (and that in the vid) they aren`t so good. And if you have an older truck clutch type LSD are "overused" and have no effect anymore unless it got replaced .

Swapped. It's an automatic lunchbox locker. Power trax no slip. I didn't want to drop a lot of money on the old truck for a selectable locker.

It disengages on corners. I can be on the gas, taking a turn, and it doesn't lock. It only locks when going from a stop, making a sharp corner, while on the gas. But if you are easy on the gas. It won't lock.

Not loud at all. That's for the locker i have. Powertrax no slip. No clicking. I had a few pops. But it's rare. Depends on the limited slip. Limited slip with clutch packs? Eh i wouldn't. A torsen diff or something similar would be better for road use. The locker does have little quirks that some people wont like. But it is drivable. Like 7 out of 10 for road use. It's not horrible to drive

I've had them on my XJ for about 100K miles, front and rear. The rear one wears and get noisier as time passes. It's a daily driver, but it's not as easy to drive as an open differential would be.

@@allenwatkins4972 Hey Allen, I ended up doing a powertrax in the front of my WJ and an Aussie in the rear (only option for the dana 44a). They have been fine in snow and rain, you just have to be careful driving and know when to let off/on the throttle. Offroad they have been great, its nice having that traction in mud or when a tire goes in the air.

Yes. On the beach and through muddy ruts. It has it's pros and cons. The truck has axle hop now and it clunks a little more. Like the backlash in the diff is wrong. But that's it. Driving on the road is the same as open diff, It made burnouts easier, I don't have to use 4wd as often. I definitely wont go back to open diff. If it breaks. @@JASONCALIFAS With crappy tires. You will kick the back out if you punch the gas around sharp corners. But if you are driving normally, then it's fine. I just got new tires and I can't slide at all, in the rain. So not much different then open diff. Unless you are intentionally trying to spin. It's suppose to snow here. I will find out how it does in the snow

Ha! Same locker I have in my 06 Ranger sport 4x4 and after 2 1/2 years I had 2 springs break causing it to not lock and switch power between sides making my truck really unpredictable, and this was after 20-25k miles and (like previously mentioned) 2 1/2 years. So far powertrax has been ZERO help, especially after emailing them about a clicking issue I had (turned out to be the u joints I replaced went bad already) over a year ago just to have them confirm they got my support ticket but never responded. At least they responded this time, but had no comments on the springs that failed 4-5x faster than they should have given the warranty... I cannot recommend powertrax due to this, especially after I spent almost $500 on this thing...

Traction control was on most likely. Its job is to pull power away from the issue wheel but it doesn't send power to the other. It's a safety thing for on road driving. It should be off for something like this or off road.

It drives like an open diff if you don't punch the gas. The posi is more streetable, yes. But I don't have to have wheel spin for this type of locker to engage. It's always engaged until I take a turn.
