Yeah, the third wheel analogy has never made sense to me. First wheel - useful because, well... _wheel._ Second wheel - useful because unicycles are very hard to ride. Third wheel - _very_ useful because bicycles fall down a lot. Might actually be the _most_ useful wheel. Fourth wheel - quite useful because it makes it equally unlikely to fall down in forward or reverse. Fifth wheel - not very useful, but still, if you stretch the definition of wheel to a "fifth wheel" trailer attachment, it's not _totally_ useless. Sixth wheel - a little bit useful for more traction. Seventh wheel? Now _that_ use useless. So yeah, I vote the analogy should be "About as useful as a seventh wheel." Only that doesn't work as well for relationships. Well, maybe very _very_ open ones!
