It's not simple or cheap; most nonprofits couldn't do it. The nonprofit is essentially selling all of its assets to a new for-profit company, so the nonprofit will be left behind with billions of dollars from this sale to continue its stated mission. You definitely would not do it this way if you were profit-motivated from the start, since billions of dollars will be "wasted" on compensating the original nonprofit.

It’s super expensive to run/train LLM at scale, need to constantly upgrade the base infrastructure to get the best of GPU’s to support the growing demands of LLM, super expensive it is, if OpenAI continues to look for capital from other parties, yes they will fund till they develop their own models and dump OpenAI, so at this point - openAI needs to make a move to profit, else the company may not be relevant in few years.
