What’s it like to open a small business in japan as a foreigner? What are the struggles a small school faces?

Hey sir, longtime fan and subscriber here. I don't usually comment, but I just wanted to say I'm really glad you're back to making this sort of video. I was kinda missing them to be honest. I found your channel many years ago when I was considering my options (and I've always had an interest in Japan). Life took a different path, but I've always liked your perspective on things, especially teaching (as I'm teaching at a university, and we've been getting a fair bit of Japanese exchange students of late). Anyways, I'm glad you're back at it. I hope you and yours are healthy and safe. All the best.

So glad to have you back~ I did my capstone for my Linguistics degree interviewing Japanese students about learning English in Japanese high schools, and they all said that they got tired of doing all the grammar and writing exercises rather than more speaking exercises, which I concluded was unlikely to change as long as the entrance tests don't include speaking in the exams.

Great info on business in Japan. Very interesting. I’m half Japanese from my moms side but don’t really know the culture. It’s fascinating to hear about Japan. 🙂

Hey Scott, You should turn this into a series of sorts for those of use who live here in Japan already. That would be interesting and incredibly informative 💯

Hey, I heared that (at least in Tokyo) it seems to hard to get a permission for operating a "discotheque" (-> Techno club). Did you ever hear of that or is it the same in your area (which is Osaka if I remember correctly) ? My other business idea is an american bqq restaurant with smoked meats, like pull pork, ribs and beef brisket. Do you think the japanese like such stuff?

Barbecue is very popular because they don't have it, but because of the import restrictions it's difficult to pull off. I'm sure it can be done, and think it's a great idea. Opening a club is extremely difficult, mostly because of space issues, but not impossible.

Very interesting but can you change the name of the video? It has not much to do with opening a business in Japan, it is all about starting a language learning school. I was expected to learn things like capital requirements, gotchas with different types of visas, overcoming Japanese bureaucracies, finding an office, hiring etc. etc. Very misleading title. Other than the title it was great just not what I was expecting👍

Nice video Scott. I was curious what is required of a foreigner to purchase a property or build (on vacant land) in Japan? In Canada we have programs that allow a foreign national to build/buy/invest in property or business if they come to the country with a certain level of liquid-able assets to reside or hole residence. Are there similar programs in Japan? One last question are there low income housing that are geared toward foreigners that follow a social housing form aka rent is determined at 30% of tenants net income? Great work again and thanks for any info you can provide.

Japan is very strict on immigration, you have to be financially sound to get an extended stay and have a sponsor. If you want to buy property it's done through your sponsor, so you don't own it, they do.if you're unable to pay rent, it's your sponsor's responsibility.

jfaq! natsukashii! oh man thank you for insight in eiken. that thing made me scratch my head. in the school i teach in, we do cover eiken too. but its mainly handled by the regular japanese section. for us foreign teachers we only cover eiken as a “challenge” practice for the kids who didnt apply the real tests. and man oh man. sometimes they forget to give us the answer sheets. pain in the ass deciphered that shit. my least favorite is the sentence puzzle section if you know what im talking about. theres a whole sentence and itll be missing a pair of words or phrases. in this blank would put 2 & 5? 1& 4? 3&6? i mean even some of the extra practice books i use for my class from publishers like scholastic is much easier than that and my students in my international department will have no problem. i too have to tell my parents that our english level efficiency cannot be aligned with tge so called eiken efficiency. i tell em eiken is useful in japan not outside of japan. if you go abroad in the future i tell them to take sat, toefl or ielts.

Though this is probably impossible and never going to happen, but I fantasized having my own pharmacy business which similar to my workplace and do mail order. Likely doing that in Japan is probably never going to happen, I especially would have to know All the Japanese medical stuff and medicine. I've studied pharmacy assistant course, but that's not even close enough to run a business.

Quality content. People wanting free stuff, I know that feeling when it comes to web design... Question: Let's say I have an online business that makes $3000/month, is there a way for me to register that business in Japan to get a work/business visa? Edit: does your school has a website?

Hey fellow metalhead, greetings from Greece,I have a question I was always curious about, will you ever get the right to vote?(national elections) because in most countries after you meet certain criteria depending on the country sometimes strict sometimes more lenient (years of permanent stay, work credits etc) you eventually get the right to vote but I heard that in Japan even permanent citizens who lived there 20+ years can't vote...thats a bit disturbing,is it true?
