Having owned different businesses. People always think it is easy, and that it is all fun to be your own boss. But like all things they have there pros and cons. The big misnomer of business owners is they are getting rich...Nope, profit margins are low for most business. If your margin is 1% to 5% and you want to be wealthy, you need 10 stores. Good for you two for going for it and for candidly sharing your experiences.

This is a great discussion. You really get into a lot of the "nuts and bolts" considerations of running a small business. Glad I caught this video.

The timmies cup lead me down a little rabbit hole to discovering you boys aren't too far from me! Definitely a road trip in my future. Thank you for sharing your experience on opening up a hobby store.

Very interesting topic. Looks like it's not an easy job after all. I love hobby shops. I have 3 of then in my town. The most fantastic thing is that... in one of them I found an old launch boxes for Warhammer 40 000 or Age of Sigmar. (no longer available on website or costs to much on ebay)

What do you guys think of primarily online discount retailers and how it affects primarily in person hobby retailers (with some online presence) like yourselves? What is the relationship? I've consulted for some of the online ones and it seemed like their volumes couldn't possibly be matched by storefronts that also have much higher structural costs. But maybe increasing restrictions on GW stocks are changing that balance too. Are you merging into their lane and competiting over one business model? Or do you have a distinct path to scaling?

I surely visit your store in the near future. :) I was procrastinating on making making my next video. For once this paid off by coming across your channel.

Stoked to have discovered your guys’ channel! Can tell you are sharp guys, and I love the transparency and professionalism. It would be great to learn more about how you got started. I’d also find it interesting if you were to compare your business plan from the outset when you may have been operating on a lot of assumptions to how things turned out over time. What were some of the biggest surprises in terms of costs, revenue, and the day-to-day. Cheers!

I like how you guys have Chaos Black rattle cans in stock, but my local GW-owned and operated Warhammer shop has been out for a while and doesn't have an answer for when it will be back.... US based, possible supply chain issue? Love your videos, guys. Hoping for more The Old World content from you this year!

Awesome video, and fantastic idea for a series. I've been interested in running my own business for a long time, a hobby store is one of the business I've considered. My question is this, you can't have a store that only caters to the hobbies you know (for me RC's, Trains, Models). How do you guys handle selling, helping and advising customers in a hobby you know little to nothing about? Or do you stay away from that stuff? For example I'm not into games and miniatures that sometimes go with games, but most hobby stores sell that stuff. Thanks for doing this video series. I was flabbergasted when searched opening a hobby store and your video was #1, I didn't think anything useful would show up. -Matthew

Am debating partnering with a local Warhammer store manager to open a game shop as he is the only shop where you can go and play warhammer within 45 min+ of driving.(and this is in a very densely populated area in southern california), but being the lone employee at this store is pretty rough because it means closing for 30 mins every 4 hours and he only has 2 tables for gaming and GW wont help him get any more despite having usually a store full of people waiting to play. Closer shops only cater to TCGs and refuse to start catering to TT games even when they were offered terrain for free. I already am a partner at another business so would basically be the investor/startup money, and going in to help when I can. Just want to know your guys' thoughts. I already make enough via my current career as well as am set for retirement and make more than enough for myself and my own family. Store would only need to make enough to pay for my partner/manager to make more than he is at his Warhammer store manager job. Does this seem viable? for myself it would be more of a passion project and really making somehting I myself wish was in my area moreso than somewhere where I would need a return on my initial investment.

There's just so much to know, and if you can learn a bunch of that on someone else's dollar...even better!

Generally, the best way to make a fortune with a hobby shop is to start with a large fortune. The more invested a person is in the hobby is usually correlated with an increased chance of failure.

Wait, are you guys Lord of War Games in Oakville? I ordered my Forces of Fantasy and Bretonnia Arcane Journal from you! Unfortunately no shipping notification yet. :sadface Same with the other store I ordered Ravening Hordes and Bretonnia box/models from. I’d hoped it would at least be in the mail now. Interesting video.

The product release date is officially January 20th so it would not ship before then as per the agreement stores have with GW. 2nd, all the product for NA comes from the Memphis warehouse and they have been suffering some closures due to snow/storm related things so all the stores in NA will likely see their product next week. To add, it would not have mattered if you ordered directly from the GW website the same rule mentioned above would apply to their own shipping. Hope that helps :)

@@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905 oh, I wasn’t trying to shit on you guys or anything, I’m just sad my stuff isn’t shipped yet, as previous orders through other flgs’s have usually shipped by Thursday afternoon, but this time neither store I ordered from has shipped yet. But I also didn’t know there was snow delays down there.
