Sometimes, particularly at big-wave spots, it's nice to have a non-triple-XL day to kick off the season. Sometimes, it's nice to have a slow start in the morning, some time to reflect and catch up between sets, building through the day to allow comfort levels to rise without any death-defying heroics necessary. This is what went down at Mavericks on Tuesday -- an opening day with no caps. Which suited everyone who made the effort to make it out there just fine.
Half Moon Bay local Zoe Chait surfed from 11:30am-5pm. "It just got better and bigger throughout the day," she said. "When the tide bottomed out around 1:30, the waves were so powerful and a bit unorganized. There were some big sets that would catch everyone off guard along with some giant waves that would swing wide. But as the tide started filling in, the waves moved more towards the proper bowl and it started firing -- 15-20 foot bombs all the way until sunset!"
