How relevant is the MAS-1 material in Data Science?

I would say it's pretty relevant. Always good to have some foundational knowledge of distributions and it does touch on a few modeling techniques which you can use in practice (loess, penalized regression, time series arima, GLMs). Unlike FM, I feel like P and MAS 1 are relevant (and can be helpful in some technical portions of data science interviews). What is a large/majority part of data science that mas 1 doesn't touch on is coding/implementing.

Hello, please are there CAS exams whose result come out immediately like Exam P & FM? Also what CAS exams are purely multiple choice exams and which are are theoretical exams as well as a mixture of both multiple choice and theoretical exams?

Hi Olufemi, I have only taken P, FM, and MAS-I, so I'm not 100% sure but I believe no CAS exam is only multiple choice except for MAS-I and MAS-II. Despite that, they still take ~2 months for results to come out after the exam is taken. If you are interested in what the exams look like, the CAS posts previous exams, I'd recommend clicking on the most recent sitting for each exam to see what the structure looks like. @@theactuarialdatascientist Are you currently working in P&C space? If yes, are you doing pricing or reserving? Where do you see more demand between pensions, life and non-life?

@@olufemisamuelbankole2197 My experience has been in building predictive models to be used in P&C pricing. As for the bulk of your question, I don't feel that I really have sufficient knowledge or experience to comment; I'd recommend posting that question, perhaps as a poll, to reddit.com/r/actuary and I bet you could get a decent discussion going!

Are you employed in P&C? When did you decide to pursue the acas career instead of the asa career?

Hi Jeong! Not anymore, currently a data scientist outside of insurance so no longer pursuing exams. I fell into P&C more so than deciding as I got a full time position with only having passed Exam P so did not need to choose ahead of time. Hopefully others can comment on their experience or I might recommend looking at reddit's /r/actuary as I'm pretty sure there are threads discussing this. Hope that helps!

Congratulations! I will be taking MAS1 this October if I pass IFM this July, and it seems brutal. You may have said this in a prior video, but what made you take MAS1 before IFM?

Thanks Brandon, fingers crossed for your July results! I skipped IFM because, similar to P, a lot of the material I was familiar with due to my undergrad and master's in statistics whereas studying for IFM would have put me at ground zero. Also I just find the statistical material more interesting! Here is to hoping you get to start studying for MAS1!

@@theactuarialdatascientist That makes sense! I, on the other hand, am not a huge fan of statistics. So I know MAS1 will be a grind (and maybe I will learn to like statistics!) But I have really enjoyed learning about the derivatives in IFM so far and found FM quite interesting. What exam did you decide to start studying for? And I look forward to watching more of your vids!

Thanks! Unfortunately no :/ I'm guessing it's because they dont have a large enough pool of questions that they no there are no issues with like P/FM but who knows!
